The best and worst from Simplified
Ok, what is your favorite and least favorite track from the album ?

My favorite is A Song For You. 8)
It's pure class, and has been played a lot by me recently, off the album, and from the Cuba dvd

My least favorite is the new version of Something Got Me Started. I'm sorry, and i love the original, but i just can't get into it.

    HELLO TO YOU BOMB JACK!
MY FAVORITE CUTS ARE, THE FAST VERSION TO PERFACT LOVE AND MY LEAST IS SOMETHING GOT ME STARTED TOO.
I LIKE MOST OF MICK'S ORIGIANALS MUCH BETTER BACK WHEN.
SONG FOR YOU, IS SO GOOD, DON'T YOU THINK SO?
WHY DO YOU CALL YOURSELF BOMB JACK?

    Hi there, Bomb Jack :)
Well, my favourite one is Perfect Love
    My least favourite is Fairground.

My least favorite song is the new version of "More" - does not even compare to the original in my opinion :?
    My favorite is "Perfect Love."

Re: The best and worst from Simplified

    sasred - 27.04.2006, 18:16

    Best--Sad Old Red
Worst--Fairground (though the live "hybrid" version KICKS!!!! :top)

Re: The best and worst from Simplified

Oops, haven't listened to Simplified for quite some time now (Home made its way into my stereo system again  and doesn't want to get out of it now :D)

    So, from memory the...

... BEST: Sad Old Red (You HAVE to love that, don't you? ;))
... WORST: not sure, but I think it's SGMS (not because it's really bad, but more because I just love the original version and the "pre-original" version (from Let Me Take You Home) sooo much.

Re: The best and worst from Simplified

    sasred - 27.04.2006, 21:15

 Glad to know I'm not the only one who hasn't dusted this one off in a while...fess up, all of you who have let it sit on the shelf...

That said, it's in now. "More" is playing...the ears are busy studying that hotly contested bass line...might have to give it a go one of these days. Then maybe I'll try bangin' out Tony Bowers' version...see which one I like better, from a player's perspective...

Those who don't play an instrument, try one--it makes you listen to music in a whole new way.

I play the CD every day at work, remixed the sequence of tunes in the order I prefer them and repeated back to back those I love....

SAD OLD RED is our favorite...

Surprise though, we really like :
SOMETHING GOT ME STARTED (and the original too)
FAIRGROUND (really like it a lot)
MY PERFECT LOVE (only the SLOW version)
MORE (still meeting up in da mountains)
HOLDING BACK THE YEARS (any version comes out great)
FOR YOUR BABIES (love the simplicity)
EV'RE TIME WE SAY GOODBYE (sad one)

I've liked A SONG FOR YOU since I heard it on the BBC Proms show.
and also SMILE has also been a favorite for the same reason.....
it's true, the LIVE performance of SMILE is much better than the CD....

Mark does not like SMILE, (but will let it play in the car, = once.)

Neither of us like the fast version of PERFECT LOVE (sorry blahhhh)
sounds too much like a sample of Santana's Supernatural single with Rob Thomas.....go ahead and compare.

We love the black + white artwork on the CD, and we love the
CUBA DVD but wish the band was "stage front"....

Simplified seems like a dream come true for a performer that has recoreded for over 20 years, and now had the opportunity to re-record the classics and a few new ones in his mature, mellow voice of today.

    Love,
    Lin+Mark

Oh Shannon & michi, I’m so guilty too! I haven’t listened to Simplified for quite a while. I didn’t want post a response to this thread until I listened to it again. So I played it a few times this weekend. It’s a good album but it’s just not my favorite. I always end up playing something else by SR before I listen to this. I think the reason as to why I feel this way is that I really prefer the original versions of most of the songs on here. They are much more powerful. It’s a bit too mellow for me on this CD. But I do plan on listening to it more in the future.

My favorite new song on the CD is Perfect Love---To me, it's the best song on the CD. Great Latin Beats and oh so smooth!!!! 8) The video is great too.

Sad Old Red is the best remake on the CD. I like this version better than the original. Very jazzy and finger snapping good!!! :top

My least favorite song on the CD is For Your Babies---It's not because I do not like particular version, it's just my least favorite SR song. It’s not terrible song, the lyrics are good but it just does nothing for me neither this version nor the original. Maybe it is because I have no kids of my own so I cannot relate??? Don’t really know? Sorry about feeling this way! :|

    Good Morning All!!! :D :D

First of all, since I'm typing with a brace on my right hand, there may be more spelling errors there than should be...but I'm getting along fine..

My favorites on Simplified are (in no particular order):

    Sad Old Red
Something Got Me Started (love Flamenco guitar music)
    Perfect Love (same reason above)
More (love the original, too - compare the percussion on the '05 version vs. the '89 version -- Pete does a delish job on this one)
Song For You (not over sung like Christina Aguilera's version :flop )

Holding Back The Years is good, but misses the "angst" felt in the original

OK, OK - enough of my two cents...

That's true!! Holding Back is always a great song, but there's something very special to the original version! It can only topped sung live!
Maybe it's because of the meaning of this very personal song?! It was more relevant when Mick was young I think.

What's wrong with your hand?! Did I miss something?!

Thanks for all the good wishes :-D -- Surgery was done on my right hand this past Tuesday (May 2). I'm still wearing a brace, which has hindered my writing and typing, but am feeling no pain. I was even given a prescription for Percocet, but have not needed to get it filled. It's burning a hole in my folder of discharge info. I've been also going for physical therapy, which is working wonderfully. I even went to my yoga class this morning -- no down dog, of course, but the class went well.

For those of you not wishing to pursue surgery, try physical therapy -- myofascial release, to be exact. It has really helped so far, and I'm hoping that, in conjunction with this surgery, this treatment will be a success. Wearing a wrist brace at night, during sleep, is also helpful. That is what I was doing for quite some time. It is only recently (last few months, or so) that I was having problems during the day, whereas the problem only used to affect me at night...

So, there's the poop. Again, thanks for all the good wishes. SR fans are the best :!: :!:

I recall thinking, when I was at Albert Hall, that the new version of "Sad Old Red" was worth the trip all by itself. It's an incredible arrangement - both velvety and lush and complex! In one word, it is RICH!

When I am traveling, I like to entertain myself with the ipod by listening to the original versions of songs then immediately listening to the "Simplified" version and comparing. Then, I listen to the song just focusing on a single person's performance. Then, I listen again, focusing on a different person. It's really amazing and it makes me appreciate, all that much more, what an astounding band SR has become. I can pass a few hours just by listening to a half dozen songs or fewer and invariably come away amazed.

As much as I love Mick's interpretation of "A Song For You", for me, the best part is listening to Dave play. Dave's interpretation is exquisite and his execution is impeccable. I have a friend who has studied and played piano most of her life and when I played the song for her she said "Holy Shit, that dude can PLAY!"

Ian, Kenji, all of them... Just sit down and listen to each one do their part and be thrilled by their talent.

All of the songs have merit. Some are just magical as well. "Sad Old Red" is one of the magical ones.

Couldn't agree more, Karen--this lineup is one of the tightest in the biz right now. Add in their vibrant stage presence at the shows, and you have a recipe for perfection. THIS is why we crowbar the wallet and fly a continent away for shows. :top

Just changed my ticket status to "hold at box office" for two shows today with Ticketmaster--the guy on the phone was like, "Boy, you're quite the fan, aren't you?" I said, "Yeah--went over by you for two shows in November and I'm coming back for 4 more!!" He was quite impressed and amazed. :D (He thought they were good, too, by the way.)

Simplified, Amplified, whatever. Bring it on.

And Karen's right--take it ALL in, part by part. Hear that talent...

that's what I did for Mark when he was reluctant to hear the new releases on Simplified, did the original, did the new, however...he still won't listen to Smile (makes a face) and I prefer the slower version: Your Perfect Love, have deleted the faster version altogether....
And after watching CUBA DVD, the appreciaton for the strings !!! But Sad Old Red remains the favorite that gets repeat play.

You've been so lucky Karen ! How was the crowd in Dublin ? Was there in June and loved the city.

    :)

Re: The best and worst from Simplified

    LoneStarRed - 06.05.2006, 14:26

    Lin,

The crowd in Dublin was ripe for the concert and didn't hold back one iota of appreciation. The Point is a great place and I gladly broke my "no standing on line" rule to wait outside for several hours to ensure that I would be front row, dead center, and now I'm going to willingly do the same thing in Germany this summer. Somewhere along the line [pun intended], I decided that I was too old and too grand to stand on line for anything. Then, I pulled my head out of my butt and got over it. That doesn't mean that I "love" it but it means that I'll do whatever is necessary to have a good visual and aural experience at a concert.

Don't even get me started about Dublin. That's a city that I deeply love, for certain. I'm a member of the Fitzwilliam Card Club there! This summer will be the first time in over a dozen years that I have headed "across the pond" for pleasure and not for work without stopping off in Ireland for at least a day or two. I seriously love that country and the people, especially out in the west. The Dingle Penninsula and the islands in the west are magical places and Galway is one happening city. Still, Dublin calls my name on a regular basis and I have to heed the call. I'm so glad you had a great time there. If you can't have fun in Dublin, you can't have fun anywhere!

I'm a bit late in getting to this topic but thought I would chime in.

"Song For You" is one of my faves~ mainly because of Dave's playing. It is just flawless and elegant. I have been known to play the intro over and over and my girls get a bit ticked at me :)

I LOVE "Sad Old Red" for all the reasons you have mentioned. And I must say that "For Your Babies" is also one that I just adore. I like it better than the original because I think the orchestration suits it well, but what drew me to this song is the story behind it~ how Mick wrote it after one of the guys on his management team had a child. As this guy put it, he was touched by the emotion of the song, here was Mick in his single hey-day and this song "was written by Mick because he got off on how much I got off on having a child". It was not something he expected Mick would ever write about. I find it to be such a foreshadowing as now Mick is happily committed and wanting a child, and way back then he was able to know the emotion that comes with having a child.

Sorry to carry on but as a mom I just find the depth of emotion amazing. And to hear Mick introduce the song in Italian on my live concert CD~ makes me melt.
