Debbie, you're already too late for One Burned, Twice Shy. When I clicked on that one, I got the message "We're sorry, this video is no longer available".
I almost stopped watching that Take Good Care Of Your Children video during the first minute and a half.

It's really strange because I'm usually such a purist and can rebel against covers but I'm obviously biased when it comes to Agnetha. Even her covers on MCB have become the definitive versions for me now so I'm not good at hearing other people singing 'her' songs. Silly, I know.

Thanks Mark. Very nice.
I have this song by Connie Francis, who does a great job. I am guessing Connie was Agnetha's inspiration for recording this song.

Karen's voice is completely different from Agnetha's, but I tell you ... when Karen sings 'Solitaire' .....woah.... shivers run down my spine.

Ron,
That is a very good version of The Angels Cry by Annie Haslam. I've heard of Renaissance but never heard of her before now. She has a very beautiful voice. Agnetha has a little more emotion in her version because she sounds like she's crying, and her voice quivers. In this version Annie sings it more "straight up", but nevertheless you can tell she has a great voice and a wide vocal range. Thanks for finding and posting these gems time after time.

Karen Carpenter is according to me one of the greatest female voices ever, all musical genres included,if not the greatest one , in colour of voice, technic, projection, pitch, and breathing....she was an incredible soul... but she can not compete with the Agnetha/Abba original version of "thank you for the music" ...
I find almost all the covers that the Carpenters did in their 13 year long career superior to their originals but they missed out a little bit on that Abba song...
And yet I am totally in awe of Karen's unique vocal instrument.
She reigns supreme from heaven,.nobody took her place or came even close since her passing...
It is impressive when you talk with musicians from different genres..her name comes most often first when they talk of the greatest female vocalists ever...
the exceptional quality of her voice transcends all musical genres....

Phil wrote:

Her deep voice and tone is very smooth and soothing. Later in her career, she sang song which were higher than early in her career and did not sound as pleasing to me.
I also remember when the Carpenters started out, she was their drummer, and apparently a pretty good one. But when the group took off and she became known for her singing, Richard asked her to concentrate on singing only. She was not as comfortable in front of the mike with 2 hands free initially.
Sorry to sidetrack, but I wanted to comment on what Phil said before leaving the topic.
But to stick to the topic, I agree with Phil ABBA did a better job, and Richard Carpenter agreed by not releasing their own version and saying they would not add anything by doing so, because Abba's was the definitive version.

Hi :)
"Cuando Calienta el Sol" in Spanish is the original version of "Love Me with All Your Heart"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_Me_with_All_Your_Heart
This is the best sounding version I've found from the original authors and performers of the Song, Los Hermanos Rigual (The Rigual Brothers), but there's plenty of versions from other artists in Spanish.
The part in Spanish in the English version is taken directly from the original Spanish Lyrics

Hi :)
I'm glad you liked "Cuando Calienta el Sol". This song is one of the best known in all Spanish speaking countries. In fact, I didn't knew "Love Me with All Your Heart" until I heard the Agnetha version, and obviously I instantly recognized it as an adaptation to English of "Cuando Calienta el Sol" :D
Really at the beginning of the song there's a introduction with a style and music very different but usually is skipped in the many covers of the song, including all the "Love Me with All Your Heart" versions, and even in this performance of the original song.
Unfortunately, this original clip is very old and the sound and video quality isn't the best.

No video links but:
"Wrap Your Arms Around Me" was covered by dance bands Astaire and Abbacadabra. Turned the ballad into a hi-NRG track for dance clubs.
"The Heat Is On" is a reworking of a track by Manfred Mann Earth Band called "On The Run" from their 1980 album CHANCE.
"Mr. Persuasion" was recorded by The Captain And Tennille. It was released on a compilation album from Australia a few years back.
http://captainandtennille.net/cd_ct_popup_annc_rvn.html
"The Last Time" was covered by mother/daughter duo Venus & Mars. Imagine if the band Heart had recorded the song during their 80s power-pop years. Track 5.

Agnetha's version is much more beautiful, and to me Agnetha has a much more beautiful colour of voice than the so called " mighty " Streisaqnd:-)
what a nightmare...but i have never liked her way of singing though you have to recognise she has indeed a "mighty " organ!!
Give me Karen Carpenter,Frida and Agnetha please.....delicacy in singing:-)

With all respect to Agnetha or Frida ,Karen Carpenter's voice takes "little altar boy" to heaven heights
she was , is the greatest voice ever to me in popular music and maybe in music, all styles, period.
You can not touch or even approach her singing qualities, she was out of this world technically and qua beauty, colour and projection of voice to me.
There is an internet site about her called "the most beautiful voice ever":
It is impressive to read what people from all over the world write about her voice and singing, extremely touching .
it is also impressive to see the unique cult status Karen Carpenter has now achieved with colleagues vocalists and fellow musicians from classic music to jazz through pop all over the world.
Her legacy is enormous.

Lisa and Joe... lol! I do not have a problem with cover versions and I always try to have an open ear.
Agnetha's version of Fly Me To The Moon for instance does not come near the version by Doris Day (Agnetha's version was based on hers). And even though I looooove Litet Solskensbarn, I do think The Carpenters did an amazing version with their Little Altar Boy.
I am sure great covers can be made of several other Swedish songs as well.

Here it's an other french version of What Now My love. Actually it's more true to say that WNML was an english version of the french version
The singer it's Johnny Hallyday, I don't know if he is famous in other country but in France he is considered as a legend.
This song closed the last tour of his career, so I think he felt a lot of emotion.

So I have to try to translate a bit.
He said he had a friend who rent a house and the singer rent it and ransack the house, but his friend was not angry because sing c'est la vie.
The singer also had a good friend who was going to marry with a girl and he introduced her to the singer. And it happens what it should happens.
Hope you understand my english. Anyway in french it's funny.

On Tio år med Agnetha, Agnetha said about En Sång Om Sorg Och Glädje : "Den första plattan jag spelade in sedan vi blivit ABBA. Och den första inspelning jag producerade själv. (Sedan producerade jag ju nästa LP). Det enda jag inte gjort själv var att skriva låten. Den är ursprungligen italiensk. Den här singeln kom ut 1973, och den gick upp på förstaplatsen på Svensktoppen."
According to Johnny (I think we can trust him) it's :
The first album I recorded since we became ABBA. And the first album I produced myself. (After that I produced the next album too). The only thing I didn’t do myself was to write this song. It is originally Italian and was released as a single in 1973, and it became no. 1 in the Swedish charts.

Oh, thanks.
I have Tio år med Agnetha and I understand Swedish and I read all this many years ago, but I just didn't remember.
Well, that means we have to continue the hunt and find the original. Any Italians who can help? Although, come to think of it, Middle of the Road had some Italian connection. Don't have time to check that out now, but I think they were based in Italy for a while and some of their songwriters were Italian.

Bizarre, but I genuinely think her version of If I Thought You'd Ever Change Your Mind is the definitive one- it knocks the socks off everyone else's attempts.. I have to applaud Agnetha for knowing what songs suit her best- she hit the jackpot when she covered this one.
Still interesting to hear the songs presented here, though.. and not all are terrible so thanks!

I agree Ron. The one that I am perhaps most impressed by is Vart ska min kärlek föra (I don't Know How to Love Him) from Jesus Christ Superstar. In my opinion Agnetha's version is the definite one. Truly beautiful. I have never heard anybody sing this as well. Also, great production by Björn.

Thank you Ron and Jose :D
Well I noticed I find many french cover but that's a coincidence, I didn't know the songs before.
Jose, Claude François is a very famous French singer, but anyway I think he really stays famous nowadays because of his "stupid" death.
Wikipedia : While standing in a filled bath, he noticed a light bulb that wasn't straight, tried to straighten it and was accidentally electrocuted
But Les Cloches Sonnaient wasn't a famous song, just the "second" B-side (4 songs in the single in the 60's often, anyway in France)
I will try to find new stuff before midnight

I like Joan's version but I do prefer Agnetha's vocals. It would have been great if she would have recorded in English. I also wonder why she never wrote Swedish lyrics for it.

A version of "End Of The World" by Brenda Lee:
Link
I like most of it, but there are a few phrasing "issues" I have with it, and I wish she hadn't repeated the last "goodbye". The next-to-last "goodbye" is simply gorgeous and sung very tenderly - didn't really need a repeat - they should've just let the piano finish it out, imo. I do like her deep, country voice in the spoken segment though.

You are right, it's a version very faithful to the Agnetha's original (don't know if there's other versions of "To Love" previous to Agnetha's one) and her voice is very similar.
This band has recorded other ABBA songs that aren't the usual hits with very good quality.

Nice harmonies in both those songs. And I like how the gal's voice still sounds nice when she pushes it higher - seems to be equally "at home" up there (like Agnetha, at least in that respect).
It's funny - there's a little melodic phrase in the pre-chorus of 'När du var här' that sounds a bit like a portion of 'Special' by Garbage, although the styles are obviously vastly different. :)

Karl Gerhard (1891 - 1964) was a Swedish revue-writer and performer. Many of Karl Gerhard’s plays and songs are politically to the left, and during the 1930s and World War II, they contained clear anti-fascist statements.
Little Gerhard (Karl-Gerhard Lundqvist) was a pop singer in the '60s.

This was a bit of a revelation for me. Not only that a song that I would have thought very few people knew had been covered three times, but also that it received a rock treatment three times and ...hold your breath ... I prefer all to the Agnetha version.
Yes, this is Einar Fältskog speaking. As much as I love Agnetha, I hate the sloppy sound of the I Stand Alone album. I think the song benefits from the rock guitars. I really wish Agnetha had recorded it like that originally. She really could have. I think she was great on Can't Shake Loose for example. She really should have done a rock album instead.

Ron, a confession. That is the first time Ive heard Kicki's swedish version of I'm Still Alive in full since I heard the single when I visited my friend in Paris some 20 years ago. Takes a bit of getting use to but, I love the extended guitar solo yet kind of miss the cold ending  . I,m not sure it would have worked as an ABBA track back in 79/80 but its a shame Agnetha didn't record a studio version because for me its almost on a par with her other stunning 79 composition "Nar Du Tar Mej I Din Famn". 8)

Sorry but she didn't say jeweled caskets correctly-it has to be the way Agnetha sings it there or nothing but the rest is not bad

Well I like the song by Agnetha.
But when Ledin sings, hum

The search tool says Dusty Springfield's version of My Colouring Book hasn't been posted yet. Pretty soulful, as you'd expect from her.

(I read in earlier posts the comments about Skeeter Davis. I agree. Her version of MCB is just... meh... Her voice lacks personality, IMO.)

Eva Dahlgren recently recorded "Never Again".
TV4 Play has a live performance.

Nope, I still prefer Agnetha's version over any other I have heard so far!

I can't see the link of Never Again, it does not work.

Sorry you can't watch it! I quite like Eva's version (even more the studio version). Tomas Ledin can be seen in the clip, listening to the song only.

Not for me, I am not keen on her singing in German. There are one or two songs I like for novelty value but that's it.

To me the problem with her German songs is not the language but the reportoire. I do not like most of her Swedish work that much either.

As Agnetha knew German her version would have sounded more natural at least. You can hear how much Bryan Hyland struggles with it.

The search engine told me that Anna Identici's Era Bello Il Mio Ragazzo (My young man is handsome? ) has been mentioned but no video posted. So here it is, the song that would one day be recorded by Agnetha (and the rest of what was not yet ABBA) as Dröm Är Dröm, Och Saga Saga.

I think he's from Québec (All the "là" seem to indicate it.) And yeah, he's awful. He's not that much off pitch but he sounds terribly bored.
