10 things I hate about America

For 3 months I've lived in the United States now, and I have decided to make 2 lists. One list will include all the things I love about my new home. But this list here is about the 10 things I hate about the USA. Don't get me wrong, I love it here, but there is just a bunch of things that really annoy me. And I assume that at least some of the things in this list apply to North Carolina more to than other places, but the title "10 things I hate about Emerald Isle" just wouldn't have been thought provoking enough. ;-)

    10. Border Guards
I haven't dealt with them in a while, but each time I entered the United States, I was made felt like I was a criminal. I know those people only do their jobs, but I think since a couple of years -- 7 years to be pretty exact -- the border guards, the people designing any laws about entering the States and most people living here have become very paranoid about who is entering their country. And therefore visiting this great country has become more uncomfortable than ever. At least for the 30 to 90 minutes you are standing at immigrations at airports. And the scary thing is, that they don't make it hard for foreigners only, they make feel most people uncomfortable, even Americans. My wife was once questioned for a good 20 minutes, why this, why that, after a visit to Europe. It's funny, because when she came to Switzerland, she hardly had to show her passport to enter the country. So much for everyone is welcome here...

    9. Speed Limits
Speed limits here are annoying for two reasons. The first one being that for somebody who is used to drive in Europe, they are generally pretty low and therefore boring. I am not a speeder, but years of driving on the German Autobahn made me comfortable with speeds at or above 90 mph (well, unless Sascha is driving of course ). But with time I got used to the rather slower speeds here. What is really confusing me is the constant changing of speed limits. You have to be really careful not to miss one of the changes. And to make matters worse, there are (school-)areas where the speed limit is different at certain times of the day. So suddenly I don't only have to watch my speedometer but also the clock in my car!

    8. Copyright Laws
Moving from a country where it is perfectly legal to download anything even when the source is an illegal copy (as long as you don't upload anything) and where you are even allowed to make copies for your family and close friends, to a country where people get sued for thousands and thousands of dollars, just because they downloaded a handful of songs is quite scary. It somehow doesn't affect me as much as I thought it would, but sometimes I still miss my old freedoms.

    7. Water
Switzerland is a country where tap water smells like water: like nothing. It also tastes like water: with a touch of nothingness. But it is always refreshing. Sometimes, tap water tasted better than bottled water! Here in the States, tap water tastes -- different. But certainly not as clean as bottled water. So I have to buy bottled water to have fresh water at home. Which I finally accepted. Of course, America is also the land of ice cubes, a fact that I actually like. But what are they made of? Certainly not expensive bottled water, but the weird tasting tap water. So I have to accept the weird taste in almost all of my cool drinks. Bah...

    6. Warnings
Hanna being my first encounter with a storm with near-hurricane strength showed me that this topic became more and more annoying the last few days: warnings. Apparently Americans need to be warned. A lot. And about everything possible. I don't even wanna talk about the "do not attempt" warnings on almost every commercial. But let's take the mentioned storm Hanna as an example. It was a storm, but honestly, other than some rain and a lot of wind, our place didn't have to suffer a whole lot. No flooding, no real damage. Nevertheless TV programs got interrupted repeatedly for storm warnings, storm watches, tornado warnings, tornado watches, flood warnings, flood watches, and much more. But it's not only all the warnings about every fart the weather does on TV, almost everything you buy has a huge amount of warnings. Especially drugs. Granted that I think people here are taking medicines way too often and that there is too many drugs for every little thing here, it becomes double annoying. It's ridiculousness is obvious on tv commercials that are filled with drug commercials that themselves are filled with warnings, like this one: A anti-depressant drug commercial, that runs for 60 seconds. 30 seconds of which are warnings...

    5. Taxes
Don't get me wrong, I am not against the taxes, and I haven't been here long enough to have formed an opinion about if they are justifiably high or low enough. What I don't like is the fact that here, taxes on sales are added at the check out. So if you see an item in the store or at one of them tasty looking menus, you never exactly know how much it will cost you in the end. You figure out pretty quick, about how much you have to add. And I even see the good part about it, namely that you are able to see how much money you actually spend on the item itself, and how much money you have to give to the government. But in the end, if I want to buy something, I want to know how much money I will have to spend for it, before I put it in my cart...

    4. Military
Switzerland is weird when it comes to the military. Every healthy man has to join it, and serve a certain amount of time. I don't even know exactly how much it is, because I wasn't healthy enough and I got out of it, which amused me, and put a lot of question marks on my friends that played sports with me every day. And then every member of the military has to keep their weapon at home. So yes, every healthy man and a bunch of women in Switzerland have a weapon at home, given to them by the government. That should make Switzerland and the USA best friends, shouldn't it? I was never a big fan of the military, and I especially dislike the idea that it is mandatory. And to wrap it up, I am completely aware that the military in a world power like the States has a different meaning, and is there for an actual military purpose. What I disagree with is the some times unconditional tribute to the military. I drive past hotels and in big letters they write "Thank a military person for your freedom". And I have seen exactly that: people walking up to strangers in camouflage at the airport shaking their hands and thanking them for what they do. Even kids got sent over by their parents. I am not even saying that this is outrageous or anything, but honestly I have seen enough military people with bumper stickers like "Freedom isn't free" on their car that on the other hand accept that the government is taking away all of their real freedoms. And I wonder if all the people shaking the hand of a military person ever shook the hand of a doctor for no apparent reason, or the hand of a scientist. Because like the military person they got into their profession voluntarily and probably did more to improve the every day person's life, than the military person...

    3. God
Ok, I don't believe in God. And I don't have a problem with people believing in the guy. Heck he was even a bigger part of my wedding than I ever thought. But as I keep my life without having a big invisible friend to myself, I like people the most that do the same thing with their religious believes. Keep it to themselves. But here, God seems to be everywhere, and his followers seem to want him being part of everybody's life. Let's look at money bills. They say "In God we trust" over a picture of the White House. Shouldn't it say "In our President we trust" or have a picture of a church instead? But both would be pretty weird in their own way, I guess. Then there are so many churches here, it's ridiculous. On the way to the airport, which takes me an hour by car, I drive through only 4 villages. But I must pass at least a dozen churches. Actually I just checked it on Google Earth, and even though almost 15 minutes of the drive are back roads, there are 18(!) churches directly at or very close to the roads I am taking. Actually I just saw that on a distance of less than 8 miles on the highway next to the airport you can find 24 churches or places of worship. I don't know, I just think that's a little too much. The part where it becomes dangerous in my mind is when you combine points 4 and 3 of this list, which happens a lot of times here. To me it just sounds alarming when people should thank God for the military...

    2. Everything needs to be different
I get it, America is different. More different than the rest of the world. And I proudly agree to that. But I don't need so many things to actually be different. Because sometimes it looks to me that certain things have to be different just for the sake of being different. Starting with the imperial units, which I will probably never figure out completely. The funny thing is, that on almost everything you buy the metric units are on it anyway too, so it does make even less sense to me. It continues with so many other things like the time or how the date is written. Another one that came to my attention most recently was the Olympic medal count. In every medal count I have seen so far, the number one goes to the country with the most gold medals. Well, not here, because then the USA wouldn't be number one anymore. So the winner is the nation with the most overall medals, which then makes this great country the best again. Is it just funny to me...?

    1. Censorship on TV
This is the one thing that aggravates me the most. The funny thing is, that I never was a big TV person. I had a very selective number of shows that I watched, but that was it. Now I live in a country where receiving over 70 channels is the standard. And as I try to become a good American, I try to have the TV on as much as possible. But even though I live in the land of the free now, when it comes to TV, censorship is really big. On a good day I can live with the fact that I will never hear some words on TV. They are bleeped out, and though I think words are nothing dangerous as they are only words, I might even accept it. Now I have grown up having to watch wrestling late at night on DSF (German Sports Television), where in between the action I was forced to watch slimy, low budget telephone sex commercials. I didn't like them, but they were there. And it's not the only time you can see naked breasts on European TV (although apparently this is the time that sticks out most to me, unfortunately). And I don't see anything wrong with seeing naked breasts on TV. But NOOO, not here. Here I will never see that, because the female breast is such a dangerous thing. And this fact becomes extremely ridiculous to me when I angrily change the channel because TV censorship has prevented me to see a naked female breast, and on the next channel I see the bloody remainders of a fight between an alien and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Day and time of this: Saturday morning at 10...
