Words That Look The Same But Have Different Meanings
Okay, Nef & I were on the phone today & we both came up with this game, so half the credit goes to her! Basically, you come up with a word (in ANY language) that looks or is spelled the same as another word, but then you need to give both meanings for it. I'll start:

fag = a cigarette in England; in the U.S., it's a derogatory term for a gay person

I know Nef has a bunch - she has a whole list of 'em :D

    su - 20.03.2006, 11:02

Come on Nef..I can't wait LOL  let's be having them :devil :clown

    su - 20.03.2006, 11:14

Well I can only think of one word at the moment, and that's FANNY, LOL
It has a different meaning between the English and Americans :D

    Gina From Da Block - 21.03.2006, 15:06

LOL, Su - but you need to give the definitions of each as well :-D

Hehe well as you know Gina, in America it's slang for the buttocks.
But here in England, it's slang for the female genitals. LOL

Re: Words That Look The Same But Have Different Meanings

    Gina From Da Block - 21.03.2006, 20:46

Oh MY, Sue - I truly didn't know it meant that in England

    NEFFIE-POO: where are you???

Re: Words That Look The Same But Have Different Meanings

    Nefertari - 22.03.2006, 00:25

Ooops!! Sorry Gina, I'm here :-D I've been very busy these 2 last days and I had people at home tonight. So I didn't yet come on this forum

There are "true friends" and "untrue friends" in the French and English languages : words which are the same or nearly, some have the same meaning but others not.

Well, I shall start with 2 untrue ones :

    - Lunatic in English = crazy, fool, insane
    - Lunatique in French = capricious, whimsical,

 not realy the same meaning! :? :D

    - Luxury in English = very expensive
    - Luxure in French = lust, lechery

    ******

    3 true friends now :

    English-----French

    - Abdomen = abdomen

    - Address = adresse

    - Assistance = assitance

    - Question = question

    - Example = exemple

    - etc.. = etc.. (lol)

I 'll go on giving examples in other posts

If YOU have also in YOUR OWN language "true" or "untrue friends" with English, post them here, it could be interesting, or funny to learn them.

Well, if you want words that just LOOK the same, this is an issue no matter WHICH English we're talking about  :

Bass--big smelly fish that men spend a lot of money on tournaments to fish for (rhymes with a$$), or--

Bass--the coolest instrument known to man (rhymes with ace). :D

    BLOODY
Great idea Gina & Nef!!! :D

OK I finally got one for you gals. It's an obvious one that's worth mentioning.

    BLOODY

In the US we mostly use the word bloody to say that something is stained with blood: “My shirt got bloody after cut my hand badly with a knife."

In the UK & Australia it is used as a swear word or expletive attributive (intensifier): “That bloody idiot needs a big kick in the bum!” “She’s bloody well right!”

    SMILES :D

Is the word "swank" a dirty word in the UK? I remember the old SR site never used to let me type it. Here in the U.S., "swank" means rich-looking.

Re: Words That Look The Same But Have Different Meanings

No "swank" isn't a rude word, but I believe the old forum was programmed
to remove words that were considered too course and offensive.
Wank is a course word. I remember I wrote "swanky" and it came up *****

Well, Marmite is a preparation made from yeast and vegetable extract, used
in sandwiches and for flavouring, and it's dark brown in colour.
Russet is a shade of brown, and it rhymes with gusset, that is part of the
    knickers. :)
