Your Mamma Mia! The Movie Experience.
Hi Everyone,
I thought it'd be good to create one topic where we call all post our reviews, experiences etc of Mamma Mia! The Movie.

I'll be going to see it tomorrow morning..and to celebrate the occasion, I made a top to wear (Not forgetting that without ABBA, There'd be no Movie etc :wink: );

Enjoy the Movie everyone!
It may be good not to try and leave SPOILERS here, for those who haven't seen the movie already.

I saw Mamma Mia the Movie tonight, opening night here in New Zealand.

Don't want to spoil it too much for others, but will say I thoroughly enjoyed it. When it first started I thought, oh, it is very like the stage musical, but gradually one notices all the differences and the extra things done which make it rather fabulous in my opinion.

Meryl Streep is once again superb. I like her version of the Winner Takes It All very much though it is best enjoyed when seen rather than just heard because she "acts" it so well with wonderful facial expressions etc - her face tells the story as much as the words she sings. Beautifully "staged" against the scenery too..

Amanda Seyfried has a wonderful voice, and the "best" voice in the cast but Meryl does a lovely wistful version of Slipping Through My Fingers.

All the other actors - even though not known as singers - do very well. It doesn't matter to me that they perhaps aren't the world's greatest singers. I feel it would have been a mistake to make the singing over-slick. ........ Actors like Pierce, Colin and Stellan may not be the next Andrea Bocelli or Michael Buble etc but that makes them and their performances all the more endearing - because we can relate to their versions just like our own in the shower, bedroom, kitchen, car, party wherever. By using regular (though somewhat coached) voices, they keep that close connection to Mamma Mia's target audience - the general population rather than some elitist group.

[Not sure if I've quite explained what I mean but it's late]

On that "note", some of the best musical surprises for me included Lay All Your Love On Me and SOS shared between two singers and also a rather interesting version of When All Is Said And Done. Strangely, in contrast to the Winner, I almost feel this song is better heard without the visuals, on the soundtrack. It's a very interesting version and so poignant.

Dancing Queen remains the musical equivalent of 'heaven'. I came out of the movie uplifted of course, but also a little sad, even teary-eyed like Meryl Streep perhaps reflecting on those "funny tricks of time", thinking about how the Abba era was indeed a special period, when I was younger and the world seemed a little less serious and a little more fun.

Do you mean I should have applied for a role? I sometimes sing in the shower and I definitely sing duets with Agnetha in the car with my endearing voice. (Only when I am alone in the car, btw.)

I don't know, haven't seen it. But as far as I know German habits, I fear it indeed is. The songs will be original though, I guess.

Oh... Thanks, Johnny. Well, I'll prepare myself for that by making this AC/DC-like ABBA T-shirt ;-)

Hey Johnny, definitely you could have applied :blob1:

I reckon the Pierce, Stellan, Colin roles are Everyman roles!

Keep practicing, when Agnetha and Frida begin their new group, they'll be looking for backup singers.

Subtitles are probably better than dubbing. At least you hear the original actors voice. I think English is pretty widespread across Germany; fortunate for me because I didn't take my high school German class seriously.

Thanks Maxi-Saxi, let us know what you think, especially about the laugh Pierce Brosnan got from the audience I was in (see my other thread) when he started to sing SOS. I'm curious to know if other audiences react the same!
Polargirl - 11.07.2008, 10:33

I have had reservations about Meryl Streep in this role. I found her quite good but I would have loved to see Olivia Newton-John take the lead. Maybe ONJ looks too old. The favourite for me is Colin Firth.
I think the movie is way better than the stage production.
It's a great movie to go and see with your friends and if only the weather was better [in UK] I would say a perfect Summer film. :D

Polargirl wrote: I think the movie is way better than the stage production. You're right, the movie is much more fun to see.

Meryl did a good job with singing, not to compare with Agnetha's voice (and don't dare to do that! ), but she can put emotion into her songs as well! I cried and laughed during the film, it's soooo beautiful and fun.
Sooner or later I will see this movie again! :D
ullabba - 11.07.2008, 12:55

I am going to see the movie on the 18th or 19th (opens here on the 18th), but I already have the movie cast CD. I have to agree with Gunnar that it is the best cast album!
Polargirl - 11.07.2008, 13:04

I like the album too. Especially Slipping Through My Fingers.
Enjoy it Ulla! :D

I've written about my experience at the Australian premiere on my blog. http://abbaworld.wordpress.com/2008/07/10/how-can-i-resist-you/
merton - 11.07.2008, 21:12

I had reservations about Meryl Streep too. It must have been especially challenging for the actors to try to break through the natural labelling that the audiences had about them, that most of them are not singers and that people wouldn't take them seriously.

For me her voice had an almost country twang in it which reminded me of when she sang in Postcards On The Edge but when she sang softly it was very pretty and poignant (as in Slipping Through My Fingers and Winner Takes It All).

I've seen the stage show many times but must have forgotten how physical the role was for her apart from anything else. Or maybe they did actually give her more jumping about to do.

Also, I really liked the way they handled Our Last Summer. More poignancy

abbagav - 12.07.2008, 00:03

Hello.

I've just returned from the cinema and all I can say is what an amazing film! It took me a few songs to get into the swing of things (having seen the musical 5 times it was a bit hard to adjust) but by the end I was love, love, lovin' it!

Camp as christmas but a thoroughly enjoyable romp nonetheless. I think I want to watch it every day for the rest of my life...go and see it at the first opportunity you get! And that is an order!

Oh and Merton, the audience did laugh when Pierce started singing I'm afraid. It's not his voice that's the problem, he just had such a pained expression on his face, like he was feeling really self-conscious and uncomfortable or something. Or maybe it was just constipation, I couldn't tell.

Loved everyone else though - Colin Firth is a hoot as is Meryl and Julie. I wish there'd been more song in it though - still, hopefully we should get them as extras on the DVD...

Gosh I did have a lovely time tonight!

Simsalabim - 12.07.2008, 11:15

I saw the movie yesterday!! It was so damn great! And I wasn't bothered about the cut out songs at all! The story went on so well, and I laughed and cried and I was so happy that I just didn't know what to say, where to go..It was amazing!
After seeing the movie I know for sure that Meryl's voice is the one I prefer the most! It is so young and fresh. You could never have tell she was around 60 just by hearing her sing.
I liked the parts where Bennybjörn came in too!

Now I just have to wait for the DVD release..
merton - 12.07.2008, 11:39

Hope the DVD has some really interesting extras in it!

My main "critical" comment of the movie is perhaps that they didn't make the most of the choreographical opportunities on Voulez Vous and Gimme Gimme Gimme. On stage those songs are presented so dramatically and the dancing is electrifying, whereas on the big screen the camera didn't keep its distance enough. I felt like I was in the middle of it and couldn't get an appreciation of all the movements around me.
welshabbalover - 12.07.2008, 12:12

Right OK....Here we go!

So on Thursday, I saw the movie twice.

First of All I went in the morning. Sitting waiting for the movie to start, wearing my tshirt with a giant smile on my face, I was so excited. ABBA songs were playing as people took their seats (Dancing Queen, Take A Chance On Me, The Visitors, Hole In Your Soul, Waterloo, Mamma Mia.) And then the film started.....PANIC!

The picture was only half on the screen, and the other half was nowhere to be seen...I looked around, everyone was wondering what was happening, All we could see of IHAD was the water! The GGG instrumental kicked in and with no change, i went flying down the stairs and out of the door to alert a member of staff. They thanked me, and within a minute or so it had been rectified, though I had missed both IHAD and the GGG instrumental.

The cinema was about a 1/3 full, which wasn't bad as it was the largest screen with around 500 seats...there were quite a number of elderly people, a few couples, and other adults, and one family (Me and my friends were the only people of our age, as everyone was in school.) The film itself I LOVED...there were so many laugh out loud moments, it was SO camp, which made it even funnier, Christine & Julie were totally hilarious, and I recommend that EVERYONE go see it, even if you hate the actors, or the concept of the show/movie..Take a chance on it

When Meryl asks the audience if they want more, nobody said anything...so I decided to scream out yes myself  and I do think I was the only one properly singing during Dancing Queen/Waterloo...not that I cared

Sadly, there were two other problems...One was that the sound cut out a few times...and the picture went yellow at one point  ...So i did mention this to staff after, and they gave me free tickets to come back again for any film (I'll obviously be using them for Mamma Mia 8) ) so all in all, I loved it.

Afterwards, Two ladies came up to me and commented on my tshirt, and we chatted about the film, and ABBA..which I didn't mind at all 8)

I got home, and told my mum I HAD to go again...We went early to ensure we could get tickets, and looking at the screens, It looked like it was going to be pretty quiet, while I wanted a packed room. While waiting, SO many people came out of the previous showing singing or humming ABBA songs, namely Mamma Mia! Which put a smile on my face =)

We got in early..and sat, listening to the same ABBA songs as this morning, and the room slowly but surely filled up. The row infront had been filled by a whole family, the Lady's son was an extra in the film, and couldn't wait to see his name go up in the credits
The asked me where I had bought my tshirt, to which i replied I had made it, which they all thought was both cute and awesome
The lady was obviously a rather big fan of Mamma Mia, and we chatted about it for a while leading up to the start...I had to correct her when she said Honey, Honey was the 2nd track...As i mentioned that there was an instrumental version of GGG

The film started, and thank god there we no problems with it this time. Now I'd seen the film properly, I could enjoy it more this time, not needing to look at the screen for every second, I could see how others were enjoying it! The atmosphere was ELECTRIC, With SO many laughs, and spontaneous (Sorry Harry...You'll know what I mean once you've seen it  ) rounds of applause, especially for Dancing Queen & The Winner Takes It All. This time i sang to every song, though only quietly to myself. One of the ladies from the family infront clapped to every song, and kept looking at me to see if I was still singing
The ''Encore'' was fantastic, so many people were dancing, singing, and there was a loud ''YESSSS'' when Meryl asked if we wanted more, THIS was the time when I could sing my heart out, and I did to both of these songs, and I also sang Frida's harmony (Late Late Breakfast Show 1982  ) to TYFTM...At the end everyone cheered, and people left with a huge smile on their face.

Afterwards, I had lots of people coming up to me commenting on my voice and my tshirt...I was even asked to have a few photos with people  8)

It is TOTALLY a feel good movie, And I already have several other groups of friends who I play to go see it with....I hope you all have an experience like mine..it was..AWESOME!

I Agree Jill, i love the movie, and cant wait to see it again, i like the stage prouduction also but with cast changes the show will differ from time to time, the movie is immortalised forever.

I Also agree with Gunnar, the movie has got such a feel good factor, a weekly viewing of the movie is a must. :love4:

What a great storySamy :P

You know, I plan to go to the movie again, because, I think the first time the other night I was actuallya bit nervous about how it would all come across and therefore the next time now that I have seen it I can relax and simply enjoy it.

Julie Walters is great, she is one of Britain's best comic actresses and was perfect for the role in the movie.

I went to see it saturday afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed it. I did have some reservations and I've been quite open about them but I have to say I have changed my opinion totally. The film is nothing less than great. Meryl Streep is a revelation and her rendition of TWTIA is spine tingling. Nothing could ever replace or better Abba's version.. it is, after all, definitive but see the film and judge it in that context. I would urge everyone to see it, even die hard Abba defenders/Mamma Mia haters. Get over it! If it's good enough for all four members to see it at the Stockholm premiere then surely that's enough to put your prejudices to one side, as I have done and give the film a chance ;) I'm not a fan of musicals generally but I thought I'd put my macho nonsense away for once. It's absolutely a feel good movie, funny, moving and over the top but leave any churlishness aside and enjoy it for what it is. Oh, and I wish people would lay off Mr Brosnan :) he's not playing James flippin Bond, it's totally in keeping with the feel of the film, tongue in cheek and I feel it's good that they're not all brilliant singers, you know? ;)

Meryl was just simply amazing. I don't think Pierce did too bad of a job, he was just a bit...I can't think of a word, vicious in his singing? It seemed really angry!
abbagav - 13.07.2008, 20:28

My Mamma Mia experience has left me feeling incredibly emotional. I saw the film Friday and thoroughly enjoyed it and then on Saturday afternoon I was wandering around Sainsbury's, basket in hand and I started to think about Meryl and Amanda in the 'Slipping Through My Fingers' scene and then Meryl doing 'The Winner...' on the cliff-top and I found myself starting to cry next to the cold meats counter. Obviously not hysterical sobbing but I had to wipe a tear or two away.

And then I watched the documentary from the other week again this afternoon and the same thing happened again - I became all unnecessary when Benny started talking about Bjorn being like a brother and loving him no matter what he did. Coupled with Frida and Agnetha holding hands and dancing last week, it's all been too much!

And do you know why this is? I think it's because it seems like everything that's happening in ABBA world at the moment feels like the pinnacle of the ABBA story if you will and having followed them for the last 30 plus years, it's incredible special to me to see them come from being so uncool (but incredibly popular) in the 70s, through the pop wilderness of the 80s, all the revivals in the 90s to now finally achieving 'credibility' with the world and his wife through the new movie - involving genuine Hollywood stars!

I don't know if I've explained myself very well but I hope you get the gist. It's the best I can do as I feel a bit....emotionally spent!

Gav
Dorrico - 14.07.2008, 00:55

Gav- I know EXACTLY what you mean. I've been on an incredible emotional roller-coaster ride recently too, and also find myself becoming ever so slightly tearful at times, when realising that Abba are finally getting the credit and acclaim they deserve- ie. even many of the BAD reviews of the movie are acknowledging the brilliance of the band's music...

When I went to see the movie on Friday, I had similar apprehensions to Drimnagh, but put them aside, and let the sheer joy of the piece sweep over me. AND, I even thought Brosnan acquitted himself rather well in the singing department!!! But then again, I quite like Dylan and Springsteen singing!!

It was so nice to see such a range of ages and characters in the audience, all having a whale of a time, ranging from the young girls in Abba costumes at the front, to the row of Grannies in front of me, up dancing at the end!! And, I was by no means the only male there!!!

It was sheer joyous escapism, not technically brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, but brilliant fun. I'll definitely return to see it again.

Gav the emotions you described are similar to how I felt when I saw Mamma Mia in London for the first time in 1999. I remember thinking how wonderful Abba's musical legacy was finally being recognised so publicly and promptly burst into tears.

After seeing the movie the other night my partner and I were walking to the car and bang, I start blubbering again. :sob1:
(And then a moment later I shiver with excitement) :D

No other artist/group/singer affects me in quite this way and the weird thing is I felt that way right from the beginning. It's not just a 30 odd year assocation with their music. There is something innocent and pure about the music that pulls at my heart....Heaven-sent I think! :innocent:
xxlozengerxx - 15.07.2008, 02:48

Dancing Queen and The Winner Takes It All are definitely highlights. Winner actually made me feel really emotional...

I agree with Merton's explanation of how ABBA's music is like no other..it is Heaven-sent and takes me into another world. I have no doubt that the movie experience will have the same effect on me as it did you. I am seeing it Friday, when it opens here in the US. I wonder if I will walk out as emotional as many of you people have! :P

OK....the Movie opens here in the US on Friday, and, well, for me, this is a very special day because....

MY entire family and my wife's friend is going to go see it with me! 6 of us!!, even my two teenage daughters, who said that they "really" wanted to see it  :D , and my niece is going too! We represent Two people in their 40's, one person in her 30's, one 18 year old, a fifteen year old and a fourteen year old!! Amazing group of people that are truly excited to go have the time of our lives! :P

I know that my girls will like it, and will be amazed at the fun they will have! And, as for my wife and her friend, well, they may be going to support the "ABBAFREAK"...but, I know they will like it as well. And, yes, I may be a crybaby, but having two teenage daughters..."Slipping through my fingers" always makes me cry.

You are absolutely right Joe! He's an actor, not a singer. I also feel it is good they aren't all great singers, they should be ordinary people who express emotions singing. I adored some parts I've seen, such as TACOM - it was so hilarious that she almost screeched that song while walking across the table.

Besides, I don't see anything wrong with how he sings SOS, that is, the part I've heard and I like very much "When you're gone - how can I - even try - to go oon" - not bad at all. I don't think the audience should expect to hear Agnetha coming out of his throat?
drimnagh - 16.07.2008, 16:20

Exactly, Ivana! (don't be - ed.. friendship kiss! ) I don't wish to spoil anything but as I gather neither you or Dave (abbafreak) have seen Mamma Mia yet I can almost 100% guarantee you are both going to love it!! Especially Pierce's ''When you're gone'' (SOS) part. What he lacks in technique he more than makes for in gusto so once again, get a grip, film fans and enjoy the FUN aspect of the film!

It's not meant to be Bergman!!

kristinafan - 17.07.2008, 11:10

Hallo everybody,

I have seen Mamma Mia in Dortmund yesterday. It was my first Mamma Mia experience as I haven´t seen the stage show.
And what should I say? The movie is just not my cup of tea. The film was very, very funny and I laughed all the time but felt like I could cry at the same time. No, I think the story of the musical is not very good, the film is kind of kitchy, exaggerated and – embarrasing, I thought. For me there were to many scenes with shrieking women and to many „oh my god“s in it.
But maybe you should not expect the film to be „good“ in an artistic way but just laugh and have fun? Maybe I don´t have enough sense of humor to be really happy with the film?

In any case I felt an ABBA-proudness the whole evening. I thought that it is my favourite group this is all about. I was proud to wear my ABBA T-shirt. After the film there was an ABBA karaoke. Every participant takes part in a lottery drawing where you can win a notebook and Mamma Mia soundracks (see also http://www.talentrun.de/mammamia). So of course I had to take part :-) I sang SOS on my own. The others, who mostly sang in a group, got Mamma Mia posters. But to me they said that I had done so well that I could choose a Mamma Mia T-shirt :-)))

Although I did not like the film that much, for me the whole evening was great fun. It was not quite so funny for my husband - it was „Ladies Night“ in the cinema and there were just a few men there ;-)

Maggi
AbbaNick - 17.07.2008, 11:47

Hej Maggi!

I understand what you mean - it's certainly not "Kristina från Duvemåla", that's for sure! ;)

If you go to "Mamma Mia!" (either the stage show or the film) expecting to be intellectually stimulated and challenged, you will be disappointed. However, if you want to have a LOT of fun and a GREAT evening, then I think "Mamma Mia!" is perfect for that! :)

What did you threaten him with to get him to go? :rotfl: However, maybe he's an ABBA fan too. (Maybe he's just a Maggi fan.)

Was it in English or subtitled?

Oh, he is just a nice guy, a little of an ABBA fan by now, and a big Maggi-fan, of course

The film was dubbed, as all English films are in Germany. Thank god, the songs were not dubbed but subtitled! Just imagine german dubbing-speakers trying to sing ABBA-songs  I think especially Maryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried did their job better than I would have expected.

Nick, you hit the nail on the head (can you really say so in English?)with your comment. "Intelectually stimulated"
MammaMia512 - 17.07.2008, 20:20

What a fantastic day I had yesterday at the NYC premiere!

I went extra early with my mother, because I was afraid that it would be MOBBED that early. Unfortunately, it was not. We got into the city at around 11:30 and arrived at the Ziegfeld around 12:00. We were the only people there, besides the crew who was setting up. They were telling us that we could leave and come back later, but I didn't want that-I wanted to be sure that I could get a place right in front. We met up with a few other people, one of whom was an ABBA fan as well and the others who were crazy about Colin Firth. So eventually we moved away from the blue carpet and to a barracade across the street, where the crew said was the best place to be (if the stars wanted to come over before meeting with the press, they would go to that section first).

Around 5:30 the press started to set up. My mom and I were interviewed and had some pictures taken of us because I made a big, colorful sign. One side said "I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do love Mamma Mia!" and the other side said "ABBA is My Love, My Life". So that was pretty cool just to be a part of that experience.

I picked up my ticket for the movie around 6:00 (thanks ABBA fanclub!) and then went back to the barricade to wait. Thank goodness we were in front! There really weren't that many fans there. A bunch of people probably just showed up because they saw that something big was about to happen. There was probably more papparazzi than fans, but it was still such a wonderful atmosphere out there. Unfortunately, they didn't close the streets, which made it difficult to see the stars once they got out. It was very hard to see what was going on around the press areas, since we were all the way across the street. We saw Dominic Cooper, but he didn't come over to greet the fans. However, I (and the guy next to me) saw a glimpse of Benny, and we called out to him but I guess he didn't hear us then. But..first Pierce Brosnan came over. Of course everyone was going wild. I was handing him my autograph book for him to sign but instead he took my marker and signed someone else's poster. I thought he had forgotten about me and had just taken my marker so I held my book out to him. He looked right in my eyes and apologized, saying that his pen had died. Of course I absolutely melted and said something like "It's alright!" He is just so gorgeous in person, with the most beautiful eyes. And he was really nice as well!

Next we saw Benny again. At this time I started screaming so loud my voice started to get raspy and I felt like a 'sweaty obsessed fan'. But, he saw me waving at him and came across the street to sign autographs! He signed my book, and my Mamma Mia cd cover that my mom was holding. He noticed my ABBA necklace, and said that it was nice. Then he asked my mom if he could sign my poster. Wow!

Colin Firth came over next, and the girls next to us were having a field day. He was also very nice. When Amanda Seyfried came over, she was just so happy and shocked that everyone was going crazy over her. She's a very nice, humble person, and was very appreciative of all of the support that we gave her. I told her that I was looking forward to seeing the movie, and she was really excited about that.

Next Meryl Streep arrived, and she pretty much went over to the fans before meeting with the press. But...she started out on the other side. I was going wild, because I am an EXTREME Meryl Streep fan. So as I was waiting for her I saw Bjorn! So I called at him from across the street. He signed my book, my cd cover, and my poster as well. He's such a nice guy as well. Then Bjorn and Meryl met halfway and they hugged each other. It was such a beautiful moment; they both looked so genuinely happy to see each other once again. When Meryl came to sign my book, she thanked me after I told her that I loved all of her movies. She is so humble and good hearted, and was also very breathtaken after realizing how crazy people were going over her.

We saw Christine Baransi and Rita Wilson being interviewed, but they didn't come over to us. We could see where all of the other stars were being interviewed as well, but we really couldn't see much else.

When I got into the theatre, I noticed Benny in the lobby. So I politely said hi to him, he said hi back, and then I followed him up the escalator.

I was in complete shock when I discovered that I was in the middle section, in the aisle seat of the second row! Thank you fan club! There were a few other people from the fan club as well. The guy sitting next to me was British, and he knew ABBA from 25 years ago when he worked with them (something to do with a record label, I think). Plus, I think he toured with them as well.

All of the stars, plus Benny, Bjorn, Phyllida Lloyd, Catherine Johnson, Judy Cramer, and Rita Wilson (Tom Hanks couldn't make it) came up to the front of the theatre. Meryl spoke to us all, cracked a few jokes, and made everyone feel happy and comfortable. I forgot who mentioned this, but someone gave the general Mamma Mia warning "If you get uncomfortable by the sight of platform boots and spandex outfits, please leave the theatre!" The stars walked back to their seats along MY aisle. I said hello to Rita Wilson, who said hi back. When I saw Meryl Streep, I said "Bye Meryl!" She probably thought I said Hi, so she looked at me and gave the the sweetest "Hi!" anybody could ask for.

The movie was absolutely phenomenal! Please, please, please, everybody go see it! It was just fantastic. The whole place erupted into applause after numbers such as Dancing Queen, The Winner Takes It All, Does Your Mother Know, etc. At the end, they released confetti all over the place and we all got up to sing and dance to Dancing Queen and Waterloo. Plus, Benny and Bjorn both received great applause after their cameos.

After the show, I saw Christine Baranski talking to a few women, so I just stopped by and listened to what she was saying. She touched my arm, as if welcoming the fact that I, an outsider, was standing next to her. She also mentioned that it was the perfect film to usher us into the 'post-Bush' era, because there was no guns, no violence, it was just a feel-good film. She also said that even if they hadn't released the film, just the joy that they had filming it was satisfaction enough.

I then saw Catherine Johnson on the way out, and thanked her for writing the musical. I told her how much I loved ABBA and that I've seen the stage show 4 times. I told her that the movie was fantastic and that I was going to see it many more times once it came out on Friday. And do you know what she said? "Stop, you're going to make me cry!"

Overall, the day was just completely magical!!!

Ohh I was afraid of that.
Not all foreign language movies are dubbed. It's a question if it's worth the money and there also may be restrictions by the director. Jim Jarmusch's movies for example are subtitled although they are successful. And except from some children movies they ususally don't dub any songs anymore. This has become much less since the 60's.

Some cinemas also show selected movies in the original language.
But sorry, this topic isn't about dubbing etc.

Maggi from earlier postings, (Kristinafan) I liked your review because even though you may not have enjoyed Mamma Mia as much, you at least could see why that might be so, and even that part of it may have been your own personal feelings rather than the movie itself. Hope you don't mind saying that. It's just that a lot of critics who are critical never seem to admit that . I remember the days of Abbna music reviews where rock critics would write critical reviews without admitting that actually they don't even like Abba-type music so their reviews would always be biased.

That said, I do agree Maggi with some points you did make but will end up back in the theatre watching it a 2nd time!

MammaMia 512, what a fantastic experience. One you will have forever.

Well done.

This is my first post here, but I just got back from seeing the movie, and had to make a comment -- it was fabulous.

Merton -- I agree that Slipping Through My Fingers was a wonderful scene -- my favorite. But somehow The Winner Takes It All didn't appeal to me as much -- maybe because it came on right afterwards.

The audience here laughed too when Pierce Brosnan started to sing, but perhaps because the movie review in the newspaper was especially critical of his singing. Regardless, you could tell that the audience really loved and enjoyed this movie.

Brosnan gets high marks from me for taking on this role, and Meryl Streep has moved up quite a few notches as well. They were both very natural and unpretentious.

Hopefully I'm correct in spotting the cameo roles -- Bjorn comes on at the very end, as one the actors in the heavens. Benny plays the piano on the pier during Dancing Queen, although in disguise. Also, it sounds like Benny has added a small guitar piece to Dancing Queen.

What a wonderful night and a joyous experience. You know that you really enjoy a movie when you want to go right back out and see it again.
Cabbadian - 19.07.2008, 06:34

I saw it here in Toronto, Canada.
It was a 10pm show and the theatre was almost sold out (hurrah!)
The audience was great and everyone clapped at the end.

I LOVE Meryl's 'The Winner Takes it All'. I thought it was so wonderfully heartbreaking. I got teary-eyed and almost applauded when she finished (I stopped myself as the theatre was all quite). I love how it wasn't pitch perfect and she sang some of the parts like she was talking. The way it was filmed was great, too. I want a red shawl!

I am confident this movie will be a hit. Maybe not "Batman" huge, but it will do very well.

I cannot wait for the DVD! :D

WOW!
Well...

AMAZING!!! :D :D :D
I took my wife, two teenage daughters and my niece and my sister...they all enjoyed it too, and my daughters even told me that they liked it a lot, which is saying a LOT!!!
I loved it! I loved all of the signing, even Pierce, even though it was not of the quality of the others and a little "over-done". I actually thought Colin's song was sung very well by him! Colin has a sweet -sounding voice, surprised me.

My overall opinion of the movie is that it was done very well, it was very fast-paced, it was exciting, funny, sad, and happy all rolled into one very entertaining movie! I wont spoil it for those of you who have yet to see it either, but I am impressed, really. I enjoyed Benny's little cameo and seeing Bjorn too.

Our theater was a sell-out show, and we had a very good crowd, all laughed and I actually saw a lot of tears, and lots of people singing along quietly! The audience even applauded at the end! It seemed to be a great time for a lot of the people there.

Meryl and Amanda sang incredibly well, stayed true to the tunes and really were moving. Actually, Meryl did an outstanding job both signing and acting in this movie. She is believable to me, I know some others feel she was not "in" the role completely, but, I disagree. I felt her emotions and was moved by her performance. I also thought Amanda's acting and singing were incredible as well...really emotional and performed with a lot of heart.
Here I am at the Cinema in front of the display in my ABBA shirt!

Go see it! It is AMAZING!! You will have the time of your life, really. I will go see it again...to catch a few things that I may have missed! It moves along rather quickly! Like the post says below: Do not leave before the credits are over at the ending!!!

restareabear - 19.07.2008, 07:29

All I can say is GO SEE IT! Very well made movie! For those of you who saw the play, there are some differences but they are minor, mostly things you are able to do with a movie that you cannot in a play (like film sequences during some of the songs instead of watching them sing the entire thing). The singing was actually, imo, better than the trailers led me to believe it was going to be. Also, there is some great scored instrumental background music throughout!

Amanda has a rather good voice! I would encourage you to stay through the closing credits (hey...there are no opening credits!to hear her version of "Thank you for the Music". She really shines on that one, even moreso than "I Have a Dream".

You can really tell Meryl and the cast had a fantastic time with the movie. Although Meryl shines in her dramatic roles, her happiness here is very genuine!

There are some good humorous moments here! I won't spoil it for you! You'll have to see for yourself!

Me and 2 other friends had won free tickets to go and see the movie at the first showing. We got into town, and then walked to the cinema in the pouring rain, singing "Waterloo" at the tops of our voices, which made us recieve some strange looks! We all wore white in honour of ABBA!

It was packed full, but because we had won the tickets, we had the best seats in the whole cinema, which was really great. Even while we were queuing, a man came up to me and one of my friends and told us that we should be in a tribute band! (She looks a little like Agnetha, and I try to look like Frida!)

So anyway, we got into the cinema, and took our seats, and we all cheered when the movie certificate came up! We soon got into the swing of things, and we sang along to every song, and even danced for the finale of 'Dancing Queen' and 'Waterloo!'

It was a really good night, and I've been in to see it twice more since then! This is a picture of me 'and Pierce Brosnan'!

Mamma Mia 4th July Opening Night...!!
I have to say that I have never experienced such an atmosphere in a cinema as I did with this movie.
Not only did everyone sing along, clap and cheer, but at the end nearly the whole of the audience were on their feet dancing and singing along!!
Fabulous!!

Strangely enough, the following weekend went again locally and not the same excitement and only 4 people dancing at the end (two of them being my Mum and I)

I too agree that its great, all the exposure for this film - I drove through town on Saturday (day after) in an open top car with the sound track blaring out!! Still prefer the "real thing" to the stars but loving it just the same!!

hey so my time at the mamma mia movie was a pretty good one. first of all, my crappy city didn't even get mamma mia(like any other good movie that ever comes out), so i had to drive 2 hours to see it.. (yes im kinda crazy i guess) so me and my friends. (there was 10 of us) pilled into 3 cars on our way to see the movie. luckly i work with a girl in the bigger city and she got us all tickets. (she has 2 jobs, one at my dads bussiness in the bigger city, and then one at the movie cinema) (thank god she got us tickets because it was sold out for all 3 showings that day) while we were waiting in line to get into the theatre part, some younger girls. (around my age so 18-20) budded inline, and well the older ladys (45-60) got really upset so they started yelling at the girls, haha. so yeah.. it was a fight to get the best seats lol. as soon as the security gaurd opened the door the pushing startet. well i think we got the best seats since i pushed my self through everyone and threw my jacket, hat and what ever else on all the back row seats so noone else could sit there.

the movie was awesome, and all my friends gave it 10/10, even tho some of them dont even like abba. there were younger girls infront of me going "i never liked abba songs until now, i think im going to have to go out and buy some of their cds" i couldn't believe it, mamma mia is going to make my generation like abba. it felt great.
its my third favourite movie of all time now.

I still haven't seen it but in some (chit-chat, general topics) forum where I mostly lurk and rarely post, somebody actually started a thread about Mamma Mia  Considering that it's a very American forum where the name of ABBA is hardly ever mentioned (not sure if it ever has been, actually), that's pretty good.
Of course they haven't started talking about the music *sigh*
merton - 24.07.2008, 10:23

Just picking up on some of the comments on the Mamma Mia v Batman site about the musical performances in the film, e.g. Meryl singing Winner Takes It All. I still think she did really well with the song and actually liked the visual representation of it.

But thinking further, I think my initial nervousness (and therefore slight distraction) when seeing the movie first time was simply me wondering (hoping) the actors could reach the notes....I can't think of a musical where I've actually worried in such a way about the performances!!! :? :?

This is the huge risk that Benny and Bjorn took taking actors out of their comfort zone. I would go so far as to say it was a very unusual step they chose to cast the film this way.

And apart from using heavyweight stars to pull in the audiences, I'm curious as to why they didn't chose more recognisable singers....
platobird - 24.07.2008, 15:39

I saw the movie last evening. :D Generally good, although I won't see it a second time - I'll buy the DVD. :)

There were several good laughs and beautiful scenery. Meryl was good. Stellan was great. Amanda's acting was OK. The final scenes were entertaining. :D

Although I'm not a fan of Amanda's singing, I thought the worst thing was Brosnan's acting - he just wasn't believable. My wife called him "stiff". Actually, his singing was OK.

I'm joining the crowd that thinks the direction was poor. I know that Phyllida did a great job for the theater, and a live stage play has many limitations, but a movie expands the possibilities almost without limit. I have to wonder what a more experienced movie director would have done with the all-star cast, great story and beautiful location.

I know it's supposed to be a fun, active experience, but it seemed everyone was shouting for the first half the movie, and this covered up the story. Finally, when Meryl sings Slipping Through My Fingers, the pace slowed down and the characters started acting. The slow pace continued into TWTIA. Amanda was a pretty bride.

Amanda sings several songs, and I wish they could have found a cute young actress who could really sing. In interviews Amanda said she studied classical singing in her early teens, but switched to acting. It's clear to me the reason for the switch was that she failed as a vocalist. It's not the sound of her voice, but the way she attacks, holds and finishes notes.

In any event, I manged to catch both the Benny and Björn cameos.
lemmon - 24.07.2008, 20:49

I love the movie. Meryl Streep was a great choice: she gave the role some depth. Her voice is good enough but The winner...was a bit to much: all this emotion, those armmovements and her acting with that red shawl was a bit to much.
It was the same as the play. I agree an experienced director would probably have been better but it's a hit. The people love it.

I would have loved it if Agnetha and Frida were somehow mentioned' a way to say thank you to them. I have had enough of Bennybjorn. Those cameo's
I didn't like esp. the Bjorn one.
abbafreak - 25.07.2008, 08:05
I disagree
Well....
I disagree on Amanda's singing. I thought that she did an amazing job singing on all of her songs. Her voice is unique, yes....maybe not the caliber of professional singers, but, beautiful in it's own right. I think that she nailed the emotion of the lyrics in LAYLOM and in TYFTM...and many others.

Of all of the cast, to me, Amanda was the vocal star. I did not go into the theater expecting to hear angels singing...but, I heard some very good performances. Yes, I agree somewhat on Meryl's overdone exaggerated arm movements and "yelling" on TWTIA, but, I think that her emotional effort and the red scarf did suit the song well. It was meant to be "over the top", imho. :?

I agree regarding Dave's comments on Amanda's singing. Wasn't quite sure what to expect as I haven't come across her before, but I felt she definitely had the most accomplished voice, one you could feel safe in knowing she'd hit the notes.
platobird - 25.07.2008, 16:02

My opinion on Amanda's singing is my opinion, and I wasn't trying to influence anyone. Everyone should make their own assessment according to their tastes. :D

However, my opinion is usually correct. :rotfl:

Anyone who has enough time on their hands to see 100 MM commericals on TV in a day needs to get a life, and cannot be trusted to have good taste in anything. 'Nuff said.
restareabear - 26.07.2008, 00:21

Now, back to the topis at hand.

Today ended up being a slow day at work, so.....

I took 5 of my managers to a matinee showing of MM...my treat! They loved it, you could tell - the smiles were wide after we left the theater. It was total impromptu - and a blast!

This showing was actually at least 3/4 full....a better showing than opening night which was barely 1/2 full! The folks were more energetic too - there was a lot of laughter and clapping! Believe it or not (I posted this in a similar thread here already), it was an older crowd too - most of which were old enough to be my parents, and they were just loving it!

For those of you that have seen it - go back again. You will notice some things the second time around that you missed the first time! And it's just as much fun, if not moreso, because you're not watching and analyzing as much, you're just enjoying!
merton - 26.07.2008, 05:47

Good point!
restareabear - 26.07.2008, 08:40

Here's part 2 of the MM matinee trip today!

After the movie, one of my managers stopped at Barnes & Noble booksellers. He called my cell (we were just getting back in the car) to let me hear TACOM was playing in the store!

Unbelievably, when another of my managers left for the day, she got in her car and MM was on the radio! She called and let me hear that and we just roared! Imagine two different people both hearing an ABBA song as the first song you hear after MM! What are the chances of that!
Emmanuelle - 26.07.2008, 08:42

ABBA TACOM and MM or soundtrack TACOM and MM ?
restareabear - 26.07.2008, 08:48

ABBA MM and TACOM!
Emmanuelle - 26.07.2008, 08:58

 :excited:

Woah ! That's pretty amazing.

ABBA : the band that just.would.not.die
kitty-cat - 26.07.2008, 23:21

I went to see Mamma Mia today with my husband (who does not like abba  ) and kids (who put up with my music :D ) and we all enjoyed it. Hubby had a great time and thought it was brilliant and the kids loved it! I really dont undersand people who say abba's songs were murdered by Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, it was a happy film and to me was a huge tribute to abba and especially Bjorn and Benny's music!! I am a huge Julie Walters fan and have been for a long time and she was fabulous in it. The ending is really great and I'd say to others who havent seen it, please dont leave the theater straight away as there is a great bit at the end with a surprise!!!!!

I haven't posted yet as I was away helping my wife clean out her mothers house in our hometown all this past week. We saw it on opening night at the city near us, we got to the theatre an hour early and got great seats and it was a good thing because within twenty five minutes the place was sold out with just the odd single seat left. What can I say about the movie itself other than it was great, my wife enjoyed herself to the max and I got rave comments on my ABBA T shirt, the audience didn't get up and dance and sing out loud but they laughed and clapped and seemed to enjoy themselves all through it. I didn't mind any of the singing it all seemed to fit with the movie and afterward I finally found the CD at WalMart although when I played it it skips on tracks 15/16 so I have to take it back this week.
Am I going to see the movie again, yes absolutly I will and this time I will take the girl from the coffee shop in town with me as she is an ABBA nut.

abbafreak - 27.07.2008, 07:52
WOW!
I am so happy! :P

I took my youngest daughter to see the movie again for a matinee show this past week and she loved it even more than the first time we saw it! (And so did I)

I agree....it is almost better the second time around...you get to enjoy it more, you know the "new" voices...and don't find yourself wanting to compare to the originals etc. Like restarebear says, it is great to see it again...believe me, there will be things you see that you missed the first time!

Like during the TACOM scene when the water comes spurting out of the crack in the courtyard...just exactly what is Donna saying in slow motion....I figured it out this time!!! (I had no clue what she was yelling when I saw it the first time).....Now, it makes sense!! (That is my favorite scene...so happy and "climatic"!!!!

My daughter and I went alone...and I could hardly hold back the tears during "Slipping through my fingers" scene...I held her hand...it was special. Man....it was a great time. She still wants to take her friends, so I gues I will be going a third time....OK by me!! :P

BTW: I have been looking for ABBA Gold CD again....and three stores I went to today were all sold out...they had MM Soundtrack for $15.00....a little steep if you ask me...but I need a new copy of Gold...Amazon has it on backorder until the end of August!

The movie
My wife and I saw the movie last Saturday (2nd night it is running here in the USA). My heart was pounding away as it started. I think because I was afraid it might be poor reflection of the stage musical AND it was on screen at last.

We loved it! I think Amanda and Dominic did a wonderful job of LAYLOM! Meryl singing her heart out through the whole production. Meryl and Amanda singing STMF - there was not a dry eye in the house. I think that Meryl put all she had into TWTIA - rather like Agnetha did in the video long ago. Bravo! And though "the dads" won't be cutting singles anytime soon, the story, the scenery, the music made for a very satisfying whole.

Seems like the FANS love it, but the big name critics generally do not. But if you read the comments about those revirews posted on line, we FANS back up the production.

Now we want to go to Greece sometime and see the movie again, soon! We've been humming the tunes all this week, and now that I have the soundtrack - it just won't stop!!!
MammaMia512 - 27.07.2008, 19:41

Dave, I had the same revelation the second time I saw that scene by the fountain!

The movie keeps getting better and better. I've already seen it three times and keep playing the soundtrack over and over. I absolutely NEED to see it again! This movie is in my blood now.
xxlozengerxx - 28.07.2008, 01:35

LOL, I had absolutely no clue what Meryl said at that fountain bit as well until my friend told me during my 2nd viewing!
I NEED to go for the fourth time...I bet i'm going to end up going alone LOL.
What annoyed me at my third viewing was the guy next to me saying during Slipping Through My Fingers "this isn't an ABBA song"

Fire&Ice - 28.07.2008, 17:20

I have just seen it! :D

It is a fun film, there are a few highlights, such as "You have always known how to make an entrance", when Meryl has fallen through that hole straight in front of the three dads LOL LOL having her legs in a certain position, then TACOM scene, ST scene etc, then DYMK is excellent too. (Christina is a very good singer!)

However, even though I have found it funny and amusing, it is still a little too simple but it doesn´t matter. I will watch it again for sure, though not in Germany.

Of course I like Bjorn the Greek god LOL, and I think Pierce did quite a good job singing WAISAD, even though he did not sing SOS that well (I admit in the end...) but he is an actor and NO singer so that really did not bother me in the least.

May I add that I watched it with my teenage son who found it amusing and OK, together with the rest of 12 people audience - well no wonder, it is Monday 3 p.m. LOL! Everybody was laughing, singing and having fun. 8)
robspace54 - 28.07.2008, 17:23

My mom, who just turned 83(!) saw it Saturday with her friends (a dinner and movie group who call themselves "The Old Babes"). They all loved it. As they left the theater, they actively discussed going right back in to see it again. They decided to wait a few days. One of them said that she didn't think think the "3 dads" could sing all that well. This caused an awkward silence. Mom replied "Heah, it's Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Stellan whats-his-name... does it matter?" They all howled, I have heard. :-)

DancingQueen - 31.07.2008, 01:57

Yeah, seen it too! Last week, with a good friend, and I'm going to see it next with with my mother, to which I'm even more looking forward to. Also bought the soundtrack some days ago, which is absolute well-spend money, but not as good as the musical soundtrack, because it really misses some of the musical highlights like Waterloo at the end. (loved that bit: I won't be spoiling anything, but it was great)

I also liked the set-up. Some of the actors/actresses were good (Meryl, as always) and others I found a bit disappointing (Amanda Seyfield, a bit too much American acting in here) and some were just lovely to look at. (Colin Firth, but that's just a matter of personal taste..)

I definitely enjoyed it. Sang along with all the songs of course, very quitly, because I seemed to be the only around there actually knowing all the lyrics and every single song. But hey, you can't have it all, can you?
abbafreak - 01.08.2008, 07:04
American Acting???
:P
"Too much American Acting"??? Amanda Seyfried is American! Besides, there are actors/actresses representing many countries in the film...I though Amanda was perfect (IMHO) Would rather see her "act" American than Greek...more natural. But I agree with your other comments....even about Colin and the other actors being nice to look at...(Amanda is not too shabby herself!)

I know, and so is Meryl, but didn't you notice the big difference between them? :P I mean, come on. It's on a GREEK island with EUROPEAN songs and influences, but they all speak fluently American, even the whole background actors.

So what other countries did the cast represent beside 50% USA, 25% England and 25% other, mostly Swedes? :P
welshabbalover - 01.08.2008, 17:43

4th time;

We went for the 2.20 showing..which was SOLD OUT
We managed to get tickets for the 3.20 showing, which again, ended up being Sold out.
A LOT of young people in the audience, many younger than me..Infact, a whole row behind me was filled with girls and boys around 13, who were loving the movie

When I came out, I heard that the next two showing of Mamma Mia! Were cold out...

Due to seeing MM! later than planned, I only had an hour and a half to wait before seeing it again, this time with my Mum & her friends...this screening was AGAIN sold out, and before going in, all of that night's showings had sold out..There we a lot of disappointed people leaving the cinema, which was PACKED (as it was during the day!!)
This was by far the BEST audience, they were really into the whole movie, and this was the first time EVERY person had stayed until after Waterloo, many shouting at the screen for more, and 1/2 of them even staying for Thank You For The Music :D :D

At the earlier screening, I of course sang my heart out at the end, while watched by several others in the room, along with staff waiting to clean the room before the next showing.....then an hour later, they saw me in the queue and came over.. ''You're not going to see it AGAIN are you ...Obviously remembering me from my top 8)
The manager also came over, asking If I was going to sing for him again

At the end, the 1/2 of the audience which remained until the end of TYFTM sang quietly, while I sang as if I was on stage with ABBA  ...the staff came to watch, and brought a load of other staff with them too...All clapping for me at the end..

Hmmm...I wonder when I'll be seeing it for the 6th time 8)

And by the way, I asked at both Vue, and Odeon cinemas, and I was told that every SINGLE showing of Mamma Mia! was selling out, with 9, or even more showings a day...I think my city loves Mamma Mia!

:D

DancingQueen wrote: I mean, come on. It's on a GREEK island with EUROPEAN songs and influences, ...
What do you expect, greek language with subtitles? The vast majority of ABBA's music was in English, none in Greek as far as I know. Rock/pop music has completely American/Anglo roots and 90% of B&B's stated influences during the time they wrote ABBA songs were also American/Anglo. Swedish songs with heavy American/Anglo influence perhaps, but claiming strictly "EUROPEAN songs and influences" is totally inaccurate.

DancingQueen wrote: but they all speak fluently American, even the whole background actors
Where can I get a book on fluent American? I'm not sure I speak that language. I took English classes in school.

It's a Hollywood production mainly targeted for the English speaking world of which the majority is American, come on Maartje get with it dear! :rotfl:

I would probably enjoy something more of a European flavor myself actually, some of the best movies lately are non-Hollywood but alas it was not to be for MM!

I went last night with my Mum. I really enjoyed it (I've had a bit of a crappy week in work so this was the perfect pick-me-up).

The audience was a little "po faced" - no singing, no jigging in their seat, but they all loved it when you heard them talking about it afterwards. From where I was sat quite a few mothers (including my own) where shedding tears during "slipping through my fingers".

Everyone seemed reluctant to leave - they hung on until after "Thank you for the music". I loved the "Waterloo" bit at the end.

Want to go again and I will be first in the queue to buy the DVD.
merton - 02.08.2008, 13:35

Saw Mamma Mia for the second time, tonight. Loved it again but much more than the 1st time when I was a bit worried how it would all be handled.
:P

Meryl Streep's performance of The Winner is just fantastic  in my opinion. Apart from the beautiful way it was filmed, with the sea as a backdrop, she delivers it so well, conveying the lyrics with her face and body brilliantly. I was surprised to find myself moved to tears this time around. It's clear: this is HER version and it's great to see that she wasn't going to attempt copying Agnetha's definitive version - and for that I am so grateful.

She is wonderful throughout in my opinion. It's a mark of a great actress to take on a role so unlike what she has done before and still manage to be convincing.

I loved the way they filmed Dancing Queen, really picking up on the vibe of the song, that it does make you feel joyful & dropping all your cares and dancing like you were 16!

Enjoyed the Greek touches to the Voulez Vous dance sequence and that the Greek actors, though more in the background, were used throughout the movie and still played an important part in setting the scene.

Julie Walters and Christine Baranski. Great! :boogie: Julie Walters has made me laugh since her UK TV comedy from the 80s and she still manages it (love the scene with her on the water).

I thought about the choreography. There had been some criticism that it wasn't that slick as in Hollywood-style, but I think rather like a music video which is so clever to watch on screen you don't actually hear the song because you are distracted by the special effects, by keeping the choreography simple (but still telling the story) Mamma Mia manages to keep the attention on the songs, which rightly, should take centre stage.

So glad I saw it a 2nd time and like the posting above, will be rushing to get DVD and shock, horror, even the soundtrack.

(But you know, Abba originals are still Numero Uno for me).

I had a wonderful night out with my mother I will absolutely never forget. In the car to the cinema I told her as a joke about my colleague whose mum ended up crying during Slipping Through My Fingers. She laughed at it, because she'd simply NEVER cries during movies. But it happened. It's the magic in Abba's music I will never understand. Meryl started singing the first lines, and she cried silently, tears running down her cheeks while the song went on. And so did I. We said there - no talking at all, just the both of us crying - my head on her shoulder, sitting really close to each other. We sat like that for the whole evening, the magic didn't end.

My mother hardly ever cries, and certainly not during movies. But she did today. I'm so grateful for this wonderful music, I'm really moved right now..
Emmanuelle - 04.08.2008, 01:18

Well after all that grumbling and mumbling I did, I finally got to see Mamma Mia and I will (slightly reluctantly) admit that I liked it. It was fun, it was energetic, the actors did a great job and the music fit just right in. Every now and then I had to quiet the voices in my head that said "Boohoo, I miss the ABBA voices :sob1:" but I did enjoy quite a bit of the musical numbers, esp. Does Your Mother Know, Lay All Your Love On Me, Dancing Queen and the super fantastic final number. I still have a hard time with The Winner Takes It All and some others that are my favorite ABBA songs but on the whole I had a good experience.
I must say, though, that the public in the theater was very sedate. Nobody stood and sang along (well I sang along and wiggled in my seat). The public was mostly feminine. At the end I got to talk to a lady who said she loved ABBA and missed Fernando. She left before I could invite her to the forum. :-(
So here my Mamma Mia! the movie experience. I doubt I'll see it in a theater again due to having to fork the $$$ for a babysitter but I'll probably buy the DVD.

Seems to be quite a mixture of audience experiences. The two audiences I've been in have been quiet too but only because I think New Zealand audiences are often  and it takes someone to start off, and then everyone joins in. Of course stage performances are usually quite different and the times I saw the musical the audience completely got into the music and the vibe.

Definitely think it is worth seeing the movie again whether DVD or on the big screen, so many more things one picks up and there's just not the same nervousness about whether the actors will handle the parts.

Yesterday I saw the movie for the second time. Some of the plot threads became clearer on a second viewing.

A few additional comments: First, regarding Pierce Brosnan -- it's a good thing he was cast for this movie. Some people have complained about his singing of SOS. But without Brosnan's firm, masculine presence, Mamma Mia might have have been just a little bit too much silly fluff.

Second, regarding Meryl Streep -- she is amazing in this film, for this one reason: If you look at the history of great American actresses, most of them have had a short period of fame. Diane Keaton, Julia Roberts, and even Marilyn Monroe went through a splendid run of successful movies over the course of a few years, then suddenly flared out. But here is Meryl Streep, some 30 years after Kramer vs. Kramer, playing the lead role in a highly successful, entertaining movie. All that, and in a role requiring a great deal of energy to play.

I agree

I agree with you. Meryl is an outstanding actress, regardless of her country of origin. She is always in her prime, 30 years ago, and today. She even agreed to film most of this movie with poor, bright lighting (sometimes very sunny and un-flattering) on an older woman's face, with little makeup at all, unlike most actresses. She still looked radiant to me! :P Quite an achievement, I agree. Kudos to Meryl on yet another notch in her belt for a theatrical performance 2nd to none. She is amazing.

And it was also a very physical performance. I was impressed by the amount of dancing and throwing herself on the ground, jumping, climbing, etc. She must have been working very hard.

I went too see the Movie a few weeks ago and i really enjoyed watching this film the atmosphere was electric with a few people singing along too the songs,I thought Meryl and Amanda gave fantastic performances and did there best with the songs,My faveourite part was the Does your mother know sequence it was absaloutly fabb,Meryls interpretation with amanda dureing Slipping through my fingers was hartwarming,My only concern was some scenes seemed hurried but the movie in a whole was awesome, Now off too see ABBA the movie on wedensday cant wait :D

I was just reading the latest grosses for Mamma Mia and they have to be making Universal smile from ear to ear....

Latest USA gross totals $104 million and International grosses are put at $173 million. Total worldwide gross to this point is $277 million dollars and there is some speculation that Mamma Mia could be Universal's largest grossing movie of the year.

Not bad I'd say for the music of an old over the hill group of Swedes.....

Finally I Saw Mamma Mia last night

I really thought it came across well on the big screen, I thought the music could have been played a little louder though, it seemed to me to be a bit muffled.

Any way There was so much to take in It played to a sold out house and everyone stayed untill the end Of Thank You For The Music

I would liked to have seen The Name Of The Game included in the movie, Too many favorite bits to remember but I loved The Chiquitita bit.
Meryl was simply amazing the way she put her heart and soul into every thing.

Over all very good Can't wait untill the DVD arrives I'm sure it will be a best seller

Maybe there was a technical glitch at the theater where you saw the movie. Or maybe not-I wouldn't know, because I haven't seen the movie. I probably won't get to see it until it is released on DVD. :(

Yes, there is a movie theater in Zion, and there are movie theaters in neighboring towns. I don't know if Mamma Mia is at the theater in Zion or not, but I know it's at a theater in a neighboring town. I just haven't been able to go and see it.

I finally got to see the film last night and loved it. I went with a friend who is in a wheelchair so we got good places, nobody with big hair in front of us.

I was surprised by how well Meryl sings, apart from a few trailers I`ve never heard her sing before. Of course nobody sings the songs as well as Frida and Agnetha but I`m glad Meryl didn´t try to copy them, I don´t think it would have been as good. Pierce, Stellan and Colin were just right in the film, it´s actually the first time I`ve liked Pierce Brosnan in a film. I would love to have seen the out takes with them! Loved Stellans tattoo on his bottom :D It was a beautiful location and the water looked so inviting of course. The songs fitted well into the plot I thought and Benny had sprinkled some of his fairy dust over them to fit the film. This is a film you can just enjoy, it doesn´t demand anything and a film I plan to get in dvd.

My friend loved the film, she has severe epilepsy and because of brain damage some things just don´t reach her but Mamma Mia did, she sang along and was totally absorbed in the film. We are the same age and remember Abba the first time round and still love the songs.

There was a large group of pensioners there, men and women. They had obviously really enjoyed Mamma Mia and some were singing the songs on the way out. It says a lot about Benny´s music and Björns lyrics, not only is Abbas music gathering new fans 34 years after winning Eurovision but some of them are grandparents and great grandparents which is wonderful.
merton - 13.08.2008, 10:50

Maxi Saxi, glad you finally saw it & I definitely recommend seeing the film again, I appreciated Meryl's performance on The Winner much more 2nd time around for a start.

Lulu what a lovely post and how wonderful that your friend could enjoy the movie too. :agree:
Maxi-saxi - 14.08.2008, 05:35

Don't worry I will have to there is just sooooooooo much to take in. From Start to Finish

I cracked up at the end when Meryl yelled out "Do you wanna hear more"

So funny

I really really really want to see Mama Mia, but when I ask in the shops over here the shopkeeper looks at me with a quizzical expression (maybe mama mia means something in one of the local languages) and I usually end up being handed a copy of Dark Knight...

It's quite possible it could end up passing us by, specially if it doesn't have Jackie Chan, Arnie, Stallone, Seagal, etc in it. (None of them ARE in it are they?)

On the other hand it could pop up on the TV after a year...

Maybe I'll have to wait till I visit UK.
Grae - 15.08.2008, 23:30

Now seen it 6 times in the theatre, and I love it more each time. Meryl is a dream. I just wish Vancouver audiences were more enthusiastic in their appreciation of the film: they appear to enjoy it (ie. they stay right through to the end of the credits and look happy enough) but they don't exactly vocalise this, or clap much at all. Someone should light firecrackers under their seats for all the joy they're expressing. I wish I could see the film in Europe or the USA, where I am sure the normally cool and reserved Canadians would feel out of place. Or maybe it's just the Vancouver way? Anyway, it has not stopped me expressing myself by cheering at the end of the Dancing Queen sequence, and then later when urging Meryl to sing "one more."
Emmanuelle - 16.08.2008, 00:17

Grae wrote: I wish I could see the film in Europe or the USA, where I am sure the normally cool and reserved Canadians would feel out of place.

Grae I live in the USA and I can tell you, the public was very quiet. I was dancing in my seat and lip-synching/singing along but I don't think too many people were.
Maybe Europe is different in that regard.
MammaMia512 - 16.08.2008, 00:19

Grae, I've seen it 5 times, and the only time the audience was enthusiastic was at the NYC premiere. Whenever I went to the other shows, it was pretty much a few elderly couples in the audience. And I had the urge to clap and cheer after every number and dance at the end, but I didn't have the guts. Maybe next time I will; it's so much more fun when you participate. So no, it's not just Vancouver audiences. New York ones are pretty similar as well (everybody says they love it at the end, but they're all stiff during the show).
Maxi-saxi - 16.08.2008, 05:24

Sadly I have only seen it once I don't think I'll be able to get down again But don't worry DVD soon, and my girlfriend in Gisborne has seen it 6/7 times so she has made up for me

HI Emmanuelle,

I've seen the Movie 4 times in plymouth and each time the audience has
been different, twice i've been there with a full house and the atmosphere
has been electric everybody singing and dancing to the songs, the other two times the cinema was only a third full and it was fairly quiet through, you get some people clapping and tapping their feet but not alot else, i'm going again this afternoon so it will be interesting to see what another audence is like.

Finally time to write down my 2nd MM Movie experience which took place on August 5th (1 month and 1 day after my Stockholm premiere experience!). :D

Went with my husband (!) and kids to the local cinema to watch this fantastic movie again. I was surprised that not many people were there with us...When the movie started I counted about 30 people...(?)

I was sitting between my children to explain the things that have been said, because my kids could not read the subtitles quick enough and they don't understand english either... There was no clapping or singing this time, though I heard some laughing! In my opinion they better could have pump up the volume! So I missed the enthousiastic atmosphere...

But again this time I was watching this movie with tears in my eyes (because of the Stockholm-memories) and again I could laugh about some very funny scenes. It's true that you see more watching it for the second time. At one moment I even thought I missed one scene in Stockholm...(?!?). My children loved to see this Movie! They had a lot of fun watching it.

When we went home, my 10 year old daugther was totally 'in love' with Amanda Seyfried and she said she found Amanda a good singer, good actress, good looking and so on...everything was good! Now my daughter knows what she wants when she's older, she wants to be an actress like Amanda!

Even till today my children are singing the songs of this Movie and my daughter (re-?)discovered the song "Lay all your love on me", she couldn't believe it was an ABBA-song, because she never heard me play that song (?). I've played the soundtrack for my children and they really like it! I think my daughter is becoming a new fan...

Love to see this movie again, but I think it will be when I once have bought the dvd...

Yesterday my sister in law told me she is going to see this Movie with some friends, curious about her opinion!

Went to see it tonight (better late then never)

I was thinking I was going to hate it , as I had the stage version of the musical on cd and ended up giving it away as I didn't like it..

However the Film was Brilliant ok some of the singing wasn't up too much (Pierce Brosnan) but well done to him for trying!, but the film was a success, Julie Walters was Brilliant, as with Meryl Streep.

I may just go out and buy a copy of this soundtrack

a success !!

MammaMia512 - 25.08.2008, 02:40

I saw it for the 6th time yesterday. Since I'm away at school now instead of being home, the atmosphere was a bit different. There wasn't a ton of people there, but there was more than I had seen. The audience laughed at all the right times, and at the end I could tell that they all enjoyed it (they all stayed through the credits too). And...when Bjorn had his cameo one guy pointed at him...so that was pretty cool.

Okkkkkkkk...
So last night I went to see Mamma Mia! again with my friend. We had to see the 'normal' version as the sing-along was sold out, as every performance has been (And I went in the morning to get tickets, for an evening showing )

The film was back in one of the the big screens, where Im told there're 400 seats..the film, an 8.30pm showing was completely sold out, and was most DEFINITELY the best screening I've seen. The audience were into it from the beginning, clapping as the film was announced on the screen at the start. People were singing along, laughing, clapping and having a GREAT time. THEN came the ''encore'' where half of the audience danced, clapped, cheered and turned it into the best experience of ANY film I've ever had. It was so much fun, and I continued to get comments for my tshirt, and Several peple told me I should go on the X Factor

So my theory is correct...each and every time gets better and better...Who knows what my next time could be like =)

Actually there is a Mamma Mia! phenomenon that's (unbelievably enough) independant from ABBA fandom. There are people who have seen the stage musical and/or the movie several times, have bought the soundtarck and listen to it in loops, but who have no particular interest in ABBA. Go figure .

It's no surprise at all to me, Jack. How could a movie gross as much as Mamma Mia has if it depended only on tickets sold to ABBA fans?

Mamma Mia! (the musical and the movie) would have certainly been box-office disasters had it not been for the majority of its patrons: the general public.

The movie, musical, and ABBA GOLD would have been total flops if it weren't for Joe Public, who likes ABBA's hits, but certainly would never consider him/herself a bone fide ABBA fan (as we do).

Fans like us, you have to face it, are very few and far between. Joe Public is where the real money and the real numbers are. It's always been that way.
