ABBA Summer Hit?
Which one from the Movie?

Of course, MM the movie being the generator of it all.

I am not talking about any other version than ABBA's, of course.

Do you think Mamma Mia is going to be this summer's hit?
abbafreak - 09.07.2008, 01:17
?
Do you mean "Do I think that MM will be the Summer Hit of 2008, meaning the movie? Yes, I think it will be a big success.

I do think that in America, Batman: The Dark Knight may do better at the box office though....I hate to say it. But, Mamma Mia! will surely be a huge success too, just to a different audience. Batman will appeal to children and mostly male adults..Mamma Mia! I think will appeal to middle-aged adults both male and female..and some younger teens maybe, and young girls.

Dave, I actually think that Mamma Mia ABBA song will be the summer hit, that is what I had in mind.

Could be that MM movie song will be the summer hit too. I would love to see MM ABBA song as a summer hit.

That would bring me back to the time MM dominated the charts in the 70s. 8)
Dymphna - 09.07.2008, 03:08

It would be great if any of ABBAs originals were hits this summer!!
Maxi-saxi - 09.07.2008, 04:15

Perfect choice for another ABBA number 1

restareabear - 09.07.2008, 21:40

I would LOVE to have Mamma Mia flooding the radios this summer just like it did in the 70s! How cool would that be?!
Maxi-saxi - 10.07.2008, 04:58

That would be so cool

NinaPrettyBallerina - 10.07.2008, 12:58

How fab would that be!!!just imagine lying in the sun (or sitting under/in the palmtree  ) listening to the radio and they would play MM again and again...

would be great for us young fans aswell, who never got to experienced an ABBA no.1, to finally know how it "feels" and it would finally tell all those people wrong who still say ABBA was just Schlager/Bubblegum...

Here's to an abbasolutely fantastic summer 8)
Magdalena - 10.07.2008, 13:24

I am sure "Mamma Mia!" from the Movie will be the hit! But I also think it will happen to "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" :-)
drimnagh - 10.07.2008, 14:35

Well, I'd personally prefer TACOM as the summer release ( but as originally recorded by ABBA!! -if this were to happen) but I know that 'Gimme, Gimme, Gimme' as sung by the character Sophie in MM has had a video made for it so maybe that?

J
aggie-fan - 11.07.2008, 07:43

i think gimme gimme gimme will come out as a hit. since well i think even if abba had brought it out this year it would do better then it did way back in 1979. (here in canada anyways)

The trouble is that every Track on 'Gold' has now sold 26 to 27
MILLION copies on that Album.

Such Album Sales hold back a Singles chance.

But 2 ABBA Album Tracks, used in the Film, can be huge.

It is possible for ABBA's 'Slipping Through My Fingers'
to be a huge Hit, as that 'only' sold 7 or 8 Million on 'The Visitors'
Album. Also - Meryl Streep's version can be a Hit too.

Also, ABBA 'Our Last Summer' can be a huge Hit, as that has 'only'
sold about 10 Million on 'Super Trouper', & 2.5 Million on 'More Gold'.

Always - when you think about what can be a Hit 'Single' for ABBA,
you have to take into account how many this or that Song has
already sold on their Albums. (Some old ABBA Singles COULD
be Big Hits, in Countries where ABBA never sold a huge number
of Albums before - like Italy, for example. But Northern Europe,
(including the UK & Ireland), & Australia, are going to be
very, very hard places for old ABBA Singles to reach the Top 10
or Top 20 again - we all bought vast numbers of ABBA Albums).

For example, 'Dancing Queen' - 10 to 12 Million on 'Arrival',
about 6 or 7 Million on 'Greatest Hits Vol.2', several Million
on 'The Singles', & 2.5 Million or so on 'Definitive Collection' -
plus the 26/27 Million on 'Gold', and then its 'Number Ones'
Sales.

So, it cannot be a huge Hit anywhere - just a small one - too
many Album Sales. The same for 'Gimme!...', & so on. Unless
the Film suddenly creates 'ABBAMANIA' in Italy, & Italians
start frantically Downloading old ABBA Singles - that they mainly
ignored in ABBA's time. (That is one of the few places where
such old ABBA Singles have a potential Market).

If ABBA are to ever have even 1 Global Top 10 Hit again,
it has to be an Album Track that is given a huge Audience in
some way - like 'Slipping Through My Fingers', & 'Our Last
Summer' - because they are in the the 'Mamma Mia!' Film.

I study Charts, & over & over again I see 'Singles' not
doing very well because they are from several old Albums of
an Act, that have sold Millions.

In 1992, 'Dancing Queen' would have been Top 10 Globally again,
had it not already sold Millions on ABBA Albums - and since then
we have to add in 'Gold's' Sales, & the Sales of every other ABBA
Compilation - 1990's & 2000's, with old ABBA Singles on them.

As a result of its Sales on Albums before 1992, 'Dancing Queen'
could only reach No.16 in the UK, in 1992 - this is what happens
when a Classic Pop or Rock Single has already sold Millions on
Albums.

There simply is not a huge chance for the same old ABBA Singles
to be Hits - big Hits - again - not 'Mamma Mia', 'SOS', 'Take A
Chance On Me' etc - too many ABBA Album Sales.
Cronus - 12.07.2008, 03:32

I think it has already started, to some extent. A few weeks ago I was driving into town and heard Mamma Mia on the radio. It was on a station that normally would never play ABBA music. Besides, it's a very likable song that people catch on to quickly, and there's still plenty of folks who've never heard it before.
Maxi-saxi - 12.07.2008, 05:32

I reckon after listening to the Movie soundtrack What about Amanda's version Of The Name Of The Game.

I Like it a lot

ABBA's fans such as us have the albums, but a lot of people who wouldn't buy an ABBA album would buy an ABBA single, so if certain album tracks, like Slipping Through My Fingers and Our Last Summer were released as singles, they definitely could be hits.
Magdalena - 12.07.2008, 10:02

Yes, you're right, Zeebee. I think that some teenagers can buy and sing something just because of their idol, for example Amanda Seyfried. So, if we take into consideration that fact, it could turn out that dead certs won't be hits.
Fire&Ice - 12.07.2008, 10:53

A few interesting points here - Magdalena, I agree MM from the movie might be a hit, it is only natural.

I only wish I could relive the time of Mamma Mia (ABBA's) back in the 70s. What all the ABBA activity recently I feel like I'm back in time! :blob1:

Aggie-fan, I absolutely agree with you. GGG has a potential to become a hit, especially now that Madonna has also sampled it.
Again, I wish ABBA's tracks become popular.

Also agree with anyone who has mentioned STMF and OLS - these two songs are not known to the wider audience and I hope they get a lot of attention.
I've already said that in a topic somewhere.

Especially OLS could be popular because it is summer time and it fits good into it.
onlyabba4me - 12.07.2008, 13:51

'Our Last Summer' & 'Slipping Through My Fingers'
DON'T need to be 'Released as Singles', to be Hits.

Times have changed - you can get into the Singles Chart
with Album Tracks - if enough people Download those Tracks.

If enough people - who see the Film - like the 2 ABBA Album
Tracks in it, & Download the ABBA versions, those Tracks will
get into Singles Charts - at least that is how it works in the
UK & USA, now.

When ABBA were together, & we'd had Downloads, you'd
have seen many more ABBA Tracks in the Singles Charts,
than just what were Singles in Stores.

For example, instead of, 'Money, Money, Money, being in
the Charts, when 'Arrival' came out, you'd have seen most
- if not all - of 'Arrival', as Hits in the Singles Chart - 'Tiger',
& 'When I Kissed The Teacher', would have been in the UK Singles
Chart - as Downloads!

It only needs about 12,500 people to Download 'Our Last
Summer', & 'Slipping Through My Fingers' in the UK - in the
same Week - and both those Songs would be in the UK Top 10!
onlyabba4me - 12.07.2008, 14:02

Oh - I forgot something, when going on about old ABBA Singles
Selling too many - on old ABBA Albums - to be Hits in 2008.

Across the World, Singles Sales are DOWN. In the UK, they
certainly are. So, in theory, an old ABBA Single needs only to sell
about 2,500 in a Week - as a Download - and it will be back
in the UK Top 75 - at No.35 to No.27 - roughly, that area of the UK
Singles Chart.

So, ABBA COULD manage Hits after all - but, only because Sales
are so low, that you can get a Hit on rather small Sales now.

We will see.

UK TOP 200 - I CAN tell you, that the UK Singles Chart is really
a Top 200, & last Week, ABBA had THREE Songs in the Top 100
of that Chart - between No.76 & No.100 - the Top 75 is regarded
as the main Chart.

These were their 3 Top 100 Hits - 'Mamma Mia', 'The Winner Takes
It All', & - of course - 'Dancing Queen'.

We will see if any of those Songs are in the Top 75, when the
New UK Singles Chart comes out tomorrow.....They only have to
have been Downloaded about 1,000 times each, to become
Top 75 Hits, again.....

Thanks for the info onlyabba4me!

LOL Mamma mia, TWTIA and DQ! Well, I had the feeling the song would be popular again. :D

Great reading onlyabba4me, thanks :D

I have a feeling that Mamma Mia, DQ, TWTIA, Our last summer and Honey, Honey could do very well this summer! At least I hope so
aggie-fan - 14.07.2008, 06:00

lol well i kinda guessed that mamma mia and dancing queen would be a hit again. they both are time less, well thats what i think anyways. and if you ask anyone in my city about abba and they dont know who they are. you just have to say "the ones who sang mamma mia and dancing queen" then they know right away.
but. if you say something about madonna's hung up song, people try and say abba copied the (abba part) from madonna.. like some people just aren't all there i guess hahaha.

Although every song from the movie should be a Summer Hit,

Mamma Mia will be the summer hit, they're playing it on our local radio station reguarly, brings back memories of the 70's :love4:

If the UK Singles Chart were a Top 100, then ABBA would
already have 2 Hits at the moment - plus a Track from the
Film would be a Hit too.

ABBA actually have TWENTY TWO Tracks in the current UK
Top 1000 - and 11 Albums in the Album Top 1000!

Here are where ABBA Singles are in the Top 321 - apparently
the UK Singles Chart really extends to a Weekly Top 1000!!!!

ALL FROM YESTERDAY'S NEW UK SINGLES CHART

(Last Week's Position in Brackets - where known)

86 (132) Mamma Mia - 1445 Download Sales
90 (116) Dancing Queen - 1439 Download Sales
132 (.....) The Winner Takes It All - 937 Download Sales
174 (.....) Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! - 767 Download Sales
321 (.....) Take A Chance On Me - 520 Download Sales

'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!' - by the 3 Girls from 'Mamma Mia!', is
at No.95 (New Entry) - about 1400 Download Sales.

ALBUM TOP 75

'Gold' - No.12 (43) - 10,156 Sales
'18 Hits' - No.54 (Re-Entry) - 3558 Sales

'Mamma Mia!' - London Stage Cast Album - No.35 (66) - 4631 Sales

COMPILATION CHART

'Mamma Mia!' - Film Soundtrack - No.1 (New Entry) - 35,766 Sales
