Hey Hey Helen
As I was about to listen to Hey Hey Helen, I looked at the lyrics in the booklet that came in the CSR box set. In the chorus after the first verse, after the line "can you make it alone", it says in parentheses "yes you can". Later, after the line "don't you know what to do", it says in parentheses "yes you do". I listened carefully to those parts of the song, but I didn't hear "yes you can" or "yes you do". Do you hear those words in the song?

Yes I can hear them but I had to crank up the sound and it's almost whispered. "Yes you do" is spoken, not sung and I only heard it the first time they sing the chorus, not when it's repeated at the end. Have you tried to play the CD on several devices ? Sometimes that can make a difference

I didn't hear that at first either. Only after reading it in the lyrics I did. But youhave to play it very loud. :D

Elin, after I read your post, I listened to those parts of the song again, pretty loud this time, and I think I heard those words.

It's very clear and obvious on the original -perhaps the mix has been changed.

Mike,

I have to tell you that I've heard those words ever since I first heard the song (and loved it) and I find them very cool.

I don't want to offend anyone, but I'm astonished that someone does not hear those words. They're quite loud.

It is pretty easy to hear them IMO. I remember when the original lp came out I was so jealous because my sister's name is Helen!

Same here, one of the best things in this song.

Sometime in the '80s, I came across the ABBA album at the library. I checked it out and tape-recorded Hey Hey Helen, Tropical Loveland, I've Been Waiting For You, Rock Me, and Intermezzo #1. I had never heard those songs before (the rest of the songs on the album are on the Greatest Hits album, so I already had those songs). After reading what John (and others) have said, I listened to that tape recording of Hey Hey Helen, and it was only slightly easier to hear those words. It's neither very clear nor obvious, and I don't think the mix is any different.

Yes :-) It was easy to hear it when listening to a vinyl record :-)

err, maybe your copy is knackered or perhaps your stereo needs upgrading, or dare I say it without getting lynched, maybe your hearing isn't what it was/is/should be?

Have you tried 'oopsing'? Altering the sound levels? Like the old graphic equalizers? How rubbish were they?!

I've never had any probs discerning the words, Zeebee. Maybe you just have duff copys? OR, maybe in actual fact yours is an ABBA rarity that every fan on here would sell their dear old granny for? Ebay, my son!!

Well, I have to admit those lines have always been perfectly audible for me. Perhaps, as has been suggested already, there was some kind of fault on your copy?

You can easily hear those lines even with the less than perfect sound quality on YouTube;

By the way, isn't "Hey, Hey Helen" a great song? It's always been one of my favourites! :)

Mike, a lot of my ABBA collection was audiotapes made off of albums or other tapes, too. When I began collecting the CDs, I was amazed at how much I had been missing over the years!

LOL!

No, it's not for THAT reason - I've always loved "Hey, Hey Helen" from the time I first heard it over thirty years ago, well before I found out about THE Helen! ;)

Right after "don't you know what to do", the words "yes you do" are spoken, but very easy to miss. Then, before the chorus is repeated, there is a part that is sung, with a melody that is different from any other part of the song. I never knew the words to that part, but I just listened to it again and realized it's "aha, yes you do, yes you do" sung twice, very easy to hear.

Just to say... I really like this song, too!

It kind of goes hand in hand with 'I Wonder' lyrically.

I wish they would release Hey Hey Helen and other songs from ABBA on DVD
They sang on the Don Kirshner Rock Concert and from memory it was Brilliant.
