ABBA in Japan Special
Hello, I am going to ask a few questions regarding the filming of the Japan Special show that was filmed to promote the group instead of touring Japan.

First, where was the concert (show) filmed? The sets are beautiful and quite creative...unlike many of the sets in other ABBA videos for he same songs.

Second, I am wondering why about one half of the songs were lip-synced while others had a full orchestra and were sung live for the show...all of the ABBA songs from time to time had been sung live, so why were some for this show not performed live?

Third, why did ABBA not use dancers in other performances and concerts, because I think that the dancers added some "excitement" to the songs and made the stage show a little more fun!

Fourth, does everyone laugh like I do when in the finale, the golden glitter falls onto Agnetha's lip while she is singing "Thank you for the Music"...and she gracefully picks it off with her hand, only to have another big piece fall onto her lips again a few seconds later!! She was so professional to not panic when that happened!! I wonder if she and Frida had glittter confetti in their mouths after that performance!!

Next is just a comment: I really love this video, and I like the stage and the settings for the songs. I think that it shows a very unique side to their music that was not shown in their promotional videos before.

Any input from fellow ABBA Fans like me on the Japan Special? Does anyone know how successful the show was when it ran? Did it run only for one showing on one date, or was it shown more than once?

Thanks!!

I think we're the only two people on Earth who actually like the Japanese dancers, Dave........

I don't know- to me, they just add to the whole 70s flamboyant vibe that's cool to look back on 30 years later. Any US people remember Dance Fever with Denny Terrio? That kind of thing.......

We're a VERY small minority, though, Dave........ :P

Re: ABBA in Japan Special
Ooh I am going to love this topic! Japan Special has been among my favourite ABBA shows.

abbafreak wrote:

I haven't watched it for a while but I think only SOS and Money Money Money were performed live. I wish they had performed more, because I think they really can do it, but maybe it was easier that way because in some songs like Tiger, the girls had choreography as well. 8) They also liked to present the song how they sound in the studio, and that sound is just impeccable.

abbafreak wrote: Third, why did ABBA not use dancers in other performances and concerts, because I think that the dancers added some "excitement" to the songs and made the stage show a little more fun!

Yes, dancers are fun. They did block the view from time to time :rotfl: but what gives me a kick is the Tiger choreography. Did you know that people actually hate those dancers? They are possibly too prominent in Dancing queen, but they are really very good at their job! Tiger was very effective and I liked the girls' tiny part when each of them is dancing with a guy. 8) Very well done, and Frida showed once more how she could move her body like a snake.. lol! (Maybe that is why Benny said she reminded him of a snake in Carta Indiscreta  :rotfl:)

Very effective!

And erotic:

abbafreak wrote: Fourth, does everyone laugh like I do when in the finale, the golden glitter falls onto Agnetha's lip while she is singing "Thank you for the Music"...and she gracefully picks it off with her hand, only to have another big piece fall onto her lips again a few seconds later!!

Well when I first saw it, I did not laugh at all because I thought how thoughtless that had been! What if Agnetha (or Frida) raised her head while singing or even worse, catching the breath and a confetti (they look like leaves btw.) slipped into her throat at that moment? Dangerous!

But both girls definitely had a mouth full of leaves and that is funny indeed :rotfl: and I saw Frida remove them from her mouth too.

Let me also add that I like those glittery costumes very much and of course, Frida's blue boots! :blob1:

And of course, I can't resist posting a few caps, which mostly consist of Frida... :D

Dancing Queen:

Waterloo:

Fernando (I thought I had a capture of the girls..)

KMKY:

(Sorry for the Frida overkill :P and yes, I have more caps   )
abbafreak - 09.03.2008, 02:42
Yes!!!
Well, if we are a minority here about the Japanese dancers...that is OK with me!! :D I thought they were very talented and the choreography was fantastic. Yes, Dancing Queen ws a little distracting, but the rest was just incredible, I thought, and very upbeat and exciting to watch. The dancers were very, very good and well-rehearsed.

Thank you so much for the caps!! I LOVE the Japan special too...it is fascinating to watch, and a good deal different than watching the other ABBA videos!

I agree about the glitter of metallic leaves falling from the sky! Dangerous indeed! (I only thought it was funny since I could only see a few stick to the girls shiny lip gloss!)

I am glad that I am not the only person who liked the ABBA Japan Special. I feel fortunate to own a copy of the show! :P And, yes  the girl's sequined and sparkly outfits are fantastic! These clothes are some of my favorites that they have worn ever! They are so bright and exciting, just like the show!

Dave

I have this on a Dvd

I like it very much, I do not really like the Dancers on the clips as I think it distracts you from watching the girls. But I guess that was the way they did things back then.

I also like the live tracks with the orchestra, ABBA Live Wonderful. It's nice to see them sing live on stage & listening to the Vocal range of the Girls.

And with the silver/gold glitter falling on the Girls at the end and On Agnetha's lip so funny, and yet such a professional the way she gently removes it and carries on like a pro.

I adore this Special and Like many of you hope one Day it will be officially released on a DVD for us.

abbafreak - 09.03.2008, 07:14
I agree
Maxi,

I agree with you, I cannot wait to see if this Japan Special becomes an Official Release one day. Watching it in it's true format and high quality film would be wonderful. :P

There are so many things out there that all of us ABBA fans probably do not even now exist...someday, something really fantastic will appear and it will be a treat beyond belief. I know that there must be lots of interviews and performances that were recorded and never released. Someday, they will make their way out of the vaults or closets that they are in....and we will be waiting to see them!

And did she end up biting that piece of glitter?
welshabbalover - 09.03.2008, 11:27

Wonderful Show!!!
They look fantastic, the sets are fantastic and (when live) sound fantastic. I agree the dancers can be a little distracting if not annoying...

Again, I have this on DVD and the quality is really good (Got it on before i lost everything  :P) but an official release MUST happen one day. However, do Japanese TV hold the rights? For i'm sure many of us have heard the effort just to get TNOTG clip on the album deluxe. However, this could be seen as a stepping stone to getting more fantastic things from the Japanese archives!

As Dave said, I'm sure there's plenty we're unaware of that will turn up one day. I have often wondered before too if they performed Fernando in full on this special (However you do see Frida preparing to speak at the end of the first chorus) and if IIWFTN was performed in it's full length version. An extra bit of vid could keep us happy i suspect :P

Samy
Maxi-saxi - 10.03.2008, 05:48

I watched my DVD last night again as there was nothing much on Television.

I enjoyed it so much, I also noticed at the end Benny gets a couple of pieces if glitter down the front of his shirt, And I thought it was amazing that when the girls were singing when the threw there heads back how none of this glitter went down there throats.

Maxi-saxi

Dave let us hope Universal can do some sort of a deal with Japanese Television and we do get this on a DVD sometime soon, Remastered and pictured cleaned up it would be simply a stunning Special to have
abbafreak - 10.03.2008, 05:52
Detail
Yes, there was so much attention to detail on this video TV special; the sets are fantastic, the live full orchestra sounds wonderful and the extras like the horn section and the strings during the live songs really adds depth to the songs. Even the lighting is beautiful.

I am hoping like Samy and Maxi that some day, an official Japan Special release will become available. Heck, even the girls' microphones matched their outfits!!! (some of the time)...now THAT is attention to detail!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v324/Annifrid/Frida%20Caps%20JS/7JSDQueen01.jpg

One other thing, the interview pieces in the show, where the members announce their names is really interesting, and lovely. Each member states their name and hearing them speak so well in english is very nice. The sound so polite and expressive. This is one reason that I like this video because of the detail and the fact that all 4 members talk to the audience.

DAVE!! What a power of observation man! Yes, the microphones clearly matched the outfits! :rotfl: Very cool.

Have you ever seen the blooper? That one wasn't included in Japanese Special of course, lol.

Linda J - 10.03.2008, 18:21

Thanks for the great clips/ & pics, Ivana!!!! :love4:  What I've seen of this special, I LOVE!!!! :D ..Not too fussy on the dancers tho, they get in the way abit, as was said.. But, I just love "Money Money" & "SOS" sang Live.. They were fantastic Live, & it's sad they didn't sing Live more often.. :? I'm hoping we'll get more from this special, released "officially" with the coming "Voulez Vous Deluxe Ed." Any thoughts on that??
Maxi-saxi - 11.03.2008, 07:26

Yes Ivanna I have seen that Blooper before.

Still such a trooper and a star. So funny.

Wait till you see the rest!

Here is something for Agnetha admirers. I think you'll enjoy these because she looks gorgeous. :)

Agnetha in the heat of singing: 8)

You'll notice that Frida won't be having pictures here because she already has a separate TNOTG thread. :rotfl:
platobird - 16.03.2008, 18:22

Fantastic caps Ivana! Here, and in the TNOTG thread too. :applause:

Perfection was the name of the game for ABBA in 1978. It would have been wonderful to watch this special being filmed. :D

Another game was beauty, and the two western-looking ABBA girls must have driven the Japanese men crazy. They had a choice of Agnedorable blonde or Fridalicious red, whatever their preference.

In an interview, the Japanese commentator couldn't avoid the "bottom" question, although he said "hips," because "bottom" was too risqué for TV. Then, Björn says, "Ask Frida" :rotfl:

Both girls put such emotion into their performances, that the air in the studio must have been charged with lightening. Sure kept those dancers active.

The special makes me think that Agnetha was over 10 days away from Linda and baby Christian. She was near the end of her game. :(
Fire&Ice - 16.03.2008, 18:53

Thanks a lot!

Haha! Bjorn was kind of putting out the fire with gasoline. Bad Bjorn!
You could clearly see that Agnetha was fed up with the bottom talk..

Ok, some more then!

Fire&Ice wrote: Haha! Bjorn was kind of putting out the fire with gasoline. Bad Bjorn!

I've replayed your "bottom" shot. Frida never gave the camera such "backside" views. When Björn said "Ask Frida," I have to imagine there was some kind of inside talk (joke?) about the bottom. I wish I knew what it was.

Björn was a promoter, trained by Stig, and he wasn't against exploiting his wife's butt for ABBA-publicity. Much later, he commented that he now understood more, but I wonder???? 8)

platobird wrote:

Well why am I not surprised? I admit thinking twice about posting the picture as it is a little risky.

However, Frida did showcase her backside quite prominently too. Remember the end of WDIHTBM in the Movie? She was shaking not only her butt but the whole body.

Also, take notice how wiggly she was in TACOM in Starparade. I was surprised, genuinely surprised because I didn't expect such wiggle from her.. :o

platobird wrote: Björn was a promoter, trained by Stig, and he wasn't against exploiting his wife's butt for ABBA-publicity. Much later, he commented that he now understood more, but I wonder???? 8)

What did he understand more I wonder too...?

And of course the 4 people:

Who this?

We all know her! :D

Who that?

And the Ghost:

Bonnie - 17.03.2008, 00:13

OMG that picture is so.... revealing. But then of course they knew what they were wearing.

Did Björn really exploit Agnetha's bottom? Maybe he did. Maybe Agnetha did too, in the beginning but later got fed up with it. ( not with her butt of course, one can't live without one!)
Fire&Ice - 17.03.2008, 00:16

There is one of Frida even more revealing regarding underwear and no it is not the panty picture.

I have a capture but I haven't posted it.
platobird - 17.03.2008, 01:23

Fire&Ice wrote: There is one of Frida even more revealing regarding underwear, and no, it is not the panty picture. I have a capture but I haven't posted it.
The rules of common decency may forbid putting such a picture on public display. However - ahuh, ahuh, ahuh... (as in Honey, Honey)

First, I note that all Ivana's pictures reveal the tremendous energy the girls put into their performances. As much as music, lyrics, costumes, pretty faces and wiggley bottoms, they made the show. :D I want more.

Next, I observe that the double-take "bottom shot" above is a "peek-a-boo" through the slit in the skirt, and this is often more enticing than a full view.

Finally, Bonnie asks, "Did Björn really exploit Agnetha's bottom?" We'll never know for sure, but my answer is, "yes." I believe Agnetha when she says "is it necessary", and I also believe, in spite of the revealing costumes, she was uncomfortable with the attention to her butt. Yet, she wiggled it for ABBA because she was convinced (by who??) the publicity was important.

I believe Agnetha thought the music was the most important, and if she had her way, we wouldn't have all these beautiful pictures.

That is what I always try to achieve when making captures. Energy. And a posture. That is very important to me too. My favourite Frida picture is when they first sing "so I wanna know" and her hand is up.

platobird wrote: Next, I observe that the double-take "bottom shot" above is a "peek-a-boo" through the slit in the skirt, and this is often more enticing than a full view.

Yes, a peek-a-boo indeed. :o I hesitated for a moment whether to post it but then our "backside" admirers need a treat now and then.
(forgive me Johnny :P )
And yes, I think Bjorn exploited her bottom very much. As far as I remember, Bjorn made a remark about it in a concert in 75, a reporter picked it up and the bottom was destined to become famous.

platobird wrote: I believe Agnetha thought the music was the most important, and if she had her way, we wouldn't have all these beautiful pictures.

Certainly, definitely. Also, If she had had her way, we might not have had her long hair. I remember she wanted to cut it off around or after ESC because she had found it too demanding, and shorter hair is much more handy. But ABBA took off in the meantime and it was decided (lol) that she should keep her long hair. Thank goodness for that! :D

Oh, Ivana!!
Wow, Ivana.....when I started this post I had never envisioned you posting such wonderful and clear photo stills from the Japan Special for us!!!! How thankful I am (and all of us I am sure) for you and your computer skills!

Definitely eye-candy for all of us Agnetha and Frida fans....their performances on this Special Show I believe were among their best on film...even if some of the songs were not performed live...their movements and syncing with the recorded songs are spot-on and perfect. Your captures indeed do capture the girl's hearts and their emotions in their singing. I agree with most of you....Agnetha's bottom was exploited as a way to attract male fans not only to her physically, but to the music as well, after all, the beautiful voice of Agnetha comes from the same body that her bottom does!

I am forever grateful for fellow ABBA fans like Ivana who share their ABBA-related material with us on this site.

Thanks, Johnny, for allowing us to post our thoughts and feelings on here. This is by far my favorite ABBA site and one of the reasons is that we as members get to post our reasons for loving this band. I feel privileged. :D

Yes, they belong on the Voulez-vous 30th anniversary edition. Along with the ABBA in Switzerland special.

This is the "official" Japan Special but they participated in a few shows like Ginza now, my favourite Music Fair, 11 O'clock news, etc.

I would say the special should be a separate edition as Debbie said as well. Japan Special actually does not belong on the VV edition because they don't sing a single song off Voulez-vous in Japan. (I think..)

Great caps again!! I wish I were underneath Frida's cape, but, it is not me. (sad) hahahhahahha

YES, Maxi....I sure do think that Universal will eventually tap into ALL of the ABBA films and specials and release them.....slowly, however.

But, I do believe that someday we will be treated with an official high quality DVD of the Japan special, simply because of it's unique qualities and the beauty of it. It is also significant that they used this ABBA Japan special to help launch them in Japan instead of touring...and obviously it worked!! They sold a ton of records in Japan...and I am CRAZY about them!!!

Haahahaha! Oh myyy :rotfl: Well, the question is which costume she is wearing, so no she is obviously not wearing you LOL! (would be impossible to wear a person?? :D )

Ok, she wears that costume in JS by the way!

And a few That's Me caps with a unique view of the Japanese dancers! :D

By the way, I like the camera in Japanese special very much.

I agree
As usual, I agree with all of you! This period of time ABBA were at their finest and I think a lot of attention to detail was put into this special TV performance...the costumes, the makeup, the dancers, the sets, etc.

This to me is my favorite DVD to watch except for maybe ABBA the Movie (which is a little silly, but I still enjoy watching it everytime I put the DVD in!)

I had a nice trip to Finland :-) They don't like ABBA, they prefer metal  And, Ivana - take care of yourself, please - I'm sending you warming thoughts :-)

Hey, Magdalena, ..you're back!!! :D Nice to see you.. I know some Finnish ABBA fans, ..don't let them hear you say they don't like ABBA..  ..... Welcome back..

Hope you're feeling better, Ivana??
Fire&Ice - 08.05.2008, 18:53

Well both of you girls got me worried, by the way.

Thanks both for your warm get-well wishes, I was too exhausted so I took a nap and rested nicely, gonna make myself a nice get-healty ABBA VCD, lie down and watch it, and take more rest. I am feeling better now and soon we'll enjoy the TYFTM caps. I need to fix them a little like resize, exposure for the best possible result.

By the way and apropos Finland, this forum is blessed with the biggest Bjorn fan of Finland! So there, the Finnish like ABBA too. :D

I think you're right girls. Now I remember I saw some typical Finnish guys with nice tatoos on their chests:

Fire&Ice - 08.05.2008, 22:45

That's Moomin or something like that!

I am feeling a little better so caps coming soon. :)
Maxi-saxi - 09.05.2008, 04:05

Fire&Ice - 11.05.2008, 09:28

And some lip-biting: (I have or used to have :P lots of Agnetha lip biting captures. She reallllly does it a lot!)

I bet you will like this one, Johnny. I have noticed a certain affinity for this particular angle of Ms. Faltskog's beautiful face.

(oops what is SHE doing here.. )
Simsalabim - 11.05.2008, 19:02

Lipbiting! :agnetha:

These caps are great (as all the others  ), Agnetha is very cute, thank you Ivana :D
Magdalena - 11.05.2008, 22:29

Angeleyes - 13.05.2008, 10:25

Wow, Ivana, again you did a great job with your lovely caps! :love4:

I now see that I can't go away from this forum for weeks, because when I'm back again, I have to scroll through soooo much pages...  :rotfl:
Fire&Ice - 14.05.2008, 18:12

Frida eating golden leaves (or taking them out lol):

Fire&Ice - 14.05.2008, 18:14

Then Agnetha got hungry too:

... and elegantly took it out!

Simsalabim - 14.05.2008, 18:48

:rotfl: It must have been very distracting getting those things in your mouth! But no problem for the ABBA girls, they handled it very well

Thank you again Ivana!

Thank you again Ivana!

That reminds me about those air pillows from ABBA in Studio 2 :rotfl:
Maxi-saxi - 15.05.2008, 06:16

And do not forget walking down those stairs covered in plastic, I mean how dangerous that could of been

Oh yes! Why did they have to cover it with plastic? Did they want them to fall? Hmm.. :jedi:

It is a good thing that there are no plastic covered stairs in Japanese special though!

Now a little something for Frida fans. :D

Bjorn was careful not to swallow gold! :rotfl:

Fire&Ice - 15.05.2008, 22:03

And finally, this is the end...

I hope you have all enjoyed my caps. :)
Maxi-saxi - 16.05.2008, 05:45

Ivana
Thank you for your devoted hard work, I for one and many others have enjoyed your work, :

Wow....
Wow...
Ivana....amazing trip down memory lane! I so appreciate your hard work and generosity to take the time to post your caps here...and the time that it takes to make the caps in the first place. You are an artist!

Thanks so much, you have made this thread one of my most exciting threads, and you have gained a lot of fans from your Japan Special caps!!! This special needs to be "officially" released in high quality!! Maybe all of us and our interest in this film will make it happen.

You are so special to do this....thanks for everything.....

I am glad you opened this topic in the first place Dave! Otherwise, I wouldn't have had where to post them.

I appreciate it very much Dave, and I am sorry it is over. It was fun posting them and thinking up some text to go with them where I found it possible and funny. :D
It was hard work making them, but surely a pleasant one. 8)

Hmm now what are we going to do? :D
platobird - 16.05.2008, 17:37

It can't be over! In any event, you forgot the one where Agnetha had to eat gold. But she daintily removed it with a smile - and without missing a beat. :D

Considering slippery, those pieces of confetti could be slippery as the piled up on the floor.
Simsalabim - 16.05.2008, 19:26

Oh no, end already.. :(

I have enjoyed your caps very much and really appreciate your work Ivana, thank you so much!
Maxi-saxi - 16.05.2008, 20:05

A sign of a true professional in that picture every time I see this on the Clip of the DVD it always brings a smile,

One classy Lady

abbafreak - 17.05.2008, 07:55
I agree!
Yes, I agree! Both girls elegantly picked off the confetti from their lip gloss without missing a vocal! I probably would had started laughing if one stuck to my lips! Neither of them panicked and I applaud them for handling what was likely not a very good idea to do! Too much confetti and the pieces were so large! Someone could have choked!

Magdalena - 19.05.2008, 18:42

Can I have a whim again? Is it possible to have one cap of frowned Frida from each song?
Fire&Ice - 19.05.2008, 20:50

Thanks JS and everybody who loves my caps. 8)

Frowning Frida? Not sure that she frowned too much though..
abbafreak - 23.05.2008, 08:28
Frowning?????
Why do you want a frowning Frida??? Not much fun there!

Ivana....if you find a frowning Frida, be sure you follow it up with a smiling Frida, so that my memory is still good! :P

I did not see Frida frown much in this Special, as it was mostly scripted and well-rehearsed so that the members seemed happy for every single performance!
