Just Like That or I Am The City as the A-Side or B-Side
I wanted to everyone's thoughts on this topic, if ABBA had released a 3rd single in 1982 which of these songs would have been the better A-Side or B-Side.
Here is my view
A-Side: Just Like That
B-Side: I Am The City
What are your thoughts...

Just Like That as A-side and I Am The City as B-side.

Yes, if it had to be that I Am The City was a b side then it's A should have been JLT. Although I think IATC is worthy of an A Side.

Just Like That A-side
I Am The City B-side
Would have been a perfect summer single in July or August 1982...

I agree with everyone. Just Like That had the potential to be a hit. I Am The City has cool lyrics but it's a typical B-side or album track.

Both as b-sides. If neither were considered good enough at the time to be A-sides (or indeed, released at all) then it's stretching it a bit to say either of them would have been a good choice for a single.

Oh, I think I'm going to be contrary here. I would go for:
A-side: I Am The City
B-side: Just Like That
I think I Am The City is a wonderful and very commercial song. There's nothing wrong with Just Like That, but I don't think it is as strong or commercial as IATC. I always thought that I Am The City wasn't released at the time of TDBYC/C/UA/YOMO because B&B were holding it back as a possible single from the next studio album. Mind you, that could apply to JLT too...

Oh, and why is that? Because B&B are gods and know what is right and what is wrong?

I Am The City as the A side with a completely different track as the B side unless they had recorded a proper lead vocal by Agnetha.
I honestly believe that I Am The City is by far the best of all of the '82 tracks. I have said it before but the lead on the versions of Just Like That which have leaked out sound like a demo to me, even as much as it sounds like the same actual recording with the speed adjusted slightly so that it fits with each particular arrangement which is something I just can't imagine B & B doing with a genuine attempt to record a lead. I also don't think it is a particularly good song. Gill

I honestly don't know what you mean. When I listen to the snippet on the Thank You For The Music boxset the vocals sound perfect, almost heavenly. One of ABBA's best performances. With such high notes. It gives me goosebumps every time. This is how Just Like That would have sounded if it was released in full.
The other versions on bootlegs are more or less demo's (not mixed at least) and the complete sax version (which is mixed) on those bootlegs is so completely distorted... The full stereo sound on Undeleted has great vocals, by Agnetha & Frida. Nothing demo-like about them.

A : Just like that ! Defenitly.. If Abba would have released this as a single, which was the original plan to do..it would be a typical Abba hit, it has all the ingredients and a wonderful full rich abba sound in the chorus. It was a mystery at the time why it was not released.. because Just like that and I am the city were mentioned already in the spring/early summer 1982 for releasing .. but they were not ..

I agree with everything you have said especially about the vocals and sound and when you listen to the vocals and music Just Like That sounds like one of ABBA's song from the 1970's.

Tough question! I love IATC but I'd love to hear a good and complete version of JLT. I like what i've heard of it alot too, so much i occastionally have it as ringtone :D
But i think i'd like to hear it in full to make a fair decision, so for now i have to say:
A. I Am The City
B: Just Like That

I agree... although I like I am the city more than Just like that (JLT is definitely not one of my ABBA favorites), I think the lyrics of IATC are a little bit...
well...

A. I Am The City
B: Just Like That
I Am The City would have been very in step with the music scene of that time with all that techno pop electronic stuff coming out.

I agree and personally I have never understand what is so glorious about Just Like That. For me it's boring song with or without saxophone.

I wouldn't mind double A side.
I personally prefer I am the city, but JLT has its charms, and it is surely the A side material. However, I am not that thrilled with it, so the double A side seems a fine solution.

Hello
To me "I Am The City" is a sort of studiomixed construction - more than a human... (hehe) song... the vocals are quite speedy mixed - don't think they would have managed that one live - it would have been slower and they would have needed time to breath. A cool song that to the full shows that BB/Tretow had learned to cope with the digital studio.... but as for a single... a B-side! Very much an album-track.
"Just Like That" would have been a great A-side and is sooo much better than "Under Attack"/"You Owe Me One".

I agree. I think the chorus is OK but the verses I do find quite dull. It probably was the verses that stopped it being released at the time, I can certainly believe that. Having heard the chorus for the first time in 1994, I was quite hopeful for the rest of it but, whilst it satisfied my curiosity, ultimately I found the rest to be quite unexciting.

I'd like to see a double A-side, with other versions (JLT), or maybe another songs as B-sides... It would be great IMO.

Marnix, I know how much you love JLT, which was why I was careful to emphasise that what I said is just how I feel about the song. We will have to agree to disagree about the lead vocal - to me it really does sound like Agnetha is just going through the motions when she sings it rather than trying to connect with the emotion of the lyrics of the song, it is this which makes me think that it is a demo lead - I like to believe that if it was a genuine attempt to record a take for release she would have connected with the emotion and we would have got "the cry in her voice" rather than the whine we get. Also as I said I also don't think it is a great song either.
As I said we will have to agree to disagree as at this late stage neither of us are going to change are opinion. It is the differences in taste that everyone here has which helps to make this forum the place that it is. Gill

I think Gill (Geordiegirl) does make a very valid point here and one I'd agree with. It does sound like a try-out vocal in the verses. Agnetha sounds half-interested, as though she was doing something else at the same time as singing it. Almost the sort of vocal that, with her abilities, she could sing in her sleep!

Even Agnetha can't do a The Winner Takes It All performance everyday, you know.

Personally I would have preferred "I Am The City" - sadly back then it would have been relatively immaterial what was on the B-side as only the A-side would have been played on the radio. Yes there are rare occasions, such as "Brown Girl In The Ring" where the B-side is noticed, but very rare!

We have never heard the verses in stereo. So it's hard to judge one way or the other.
But Just Like That is one of Angetha's big favourites. I doubt she would have gone through the motions, not putting any emotion, in a song that is an absolute favourite of hers...
