So long Epic single
With all the hoy poloy around the TOTP performance video I wonder how many of us actually own the single with the yellow label from the uk epic?

I was lucky to get hold of one in Cardiff a few years ago, a whooping £2 because of the price I didn't expect much but it played wonderfully. What a find. I also got the over excited feeling I used to get when collecting these items.

So my question is how many of us have a copy fom the uk with the yello label.

I occasionally see them on e Bay. I think the last one I saw went for £15.

I had a bargain then.

Do you have one?

No, I don't have one. It must be the rarest of their UK singles (along with the original issue of Ring Ring) as it didn't chart.

I found it when I worked in a record store in the early 80's. It was deemed unsaleable and dumoped in a box that was going out for the binmen so, I got a freebie.
I recently found another copy in a charity shop - god knows why but I bought it

Was worth you buying it, though, Stu. You'd probably get a fair bit more for it on e Bay than you paid for it from the charity shop. I'm surprised there are any copies around at all. It didn't chart so would have had few original owners.

I own one. Bought from eBay about ten years ago. I forget how much I paid for it but it wasn't cheap. It's a nice good condition copy.

Just looked on e Bay but no Epic copies currently.

Was the single ever issued in the orange label and sleeve? I know that didn't come in until the second half of 1976, but a lot of yellow label era ABBA singles were later re-issued on the orange label (as the ABBA For The Record site will testify). Guessing So Long wasn't one of them.

Only the yellow version shows here:

Mine's got the yellow label and is a jukebox copy. I found it in one of my local record shop's numerous 50p boxes about five years ago. The guy's face dropped when I took it up to the counter... he obviously didn't know it was in there. And he didn't learn, because since then, the 50p boxes in that shop have given me two Buckingham Nicks singles and a signed copy of Bowie's Let's Dance. Lovely.

I found my So Long on yellow Epic in Morcambe, in a second-hand record shop in 1993, solid centre for a quid. A few months ago I got a second one from a car boot near me, with the push-out centre. I have Dancing Queen on yellow and orange-I think this must have been the time of the colour change-over. I wonder if the people who got rid of So Long, realised it was ABBA's only non-charting single?

I have Dancing Queen and Fernando on both yellow and orange too. Was there more than one pressing plant, or is that a silly question?

Re: So long Epic single

laylom - 15.07.2012, 21:59

Jack, Fernando and Waterloo were both re-issued on the (by then) orange Epic label, around February 1978.

I think I have the reissue as well, but the orange Fernando I was talking about has the same typeface as the yellow one, if I remember rightly. Definitely doesn't have the Abba logo on it. I really should dig them out at some point.

That'll be interesting to see-I honestly thought Dancing Queen was the first orange label. I've never seen the yellow typeface in orange, by ABBA, or any other artist on Epic.

No, I think I Do x5 was the first ABBA single to be routinely issued on the orange Epic label. So Long and Ring Ring weren't. Although that said, Waterloo was! And Fernando wasn't. Confused yet? :)

To summarise:

Ring Ring (1) = yellow only
Waterloo SEPC 2240 = yellow and orange
Waterloo SEPC 5961 (1978 reissue) = orange only (I think)
Ring Ring (2) = yellow only
So Long = yellow only
I Do x5 = yellow and orange
SOS = yellow and orange
Mamma Mia = yellow and orange
Fernando SEPC 4036 = yellow only
Fernando SEPC 5962 (1978 reissue) = orange and blue
Dancing Queen = yellow and orange

Then from Money x3 onwards, there were no yellow labels.

If I remember correctly, most of the early ABBA orange labels had the ABBA logo on (because these singles weren't deleted by the time the logo was implemented and the orange label appeared, so they were still being made), but I think SOS on the yellow label had the ABBA logo. But it's a while since I looked at my collection, so I might be remembering it wrongly.

I think my So Long promo has the push-out centre but my stock copies both have the solid centre. I'll have to check.

I've just checked mind & it doesn't have the ABBA logo on it. Gill

Unless that SOS was produced at the same time as Dancing Queen it couldn't possibly have the ABBA logo on it. The yellow label's ABBA swansong was Dancing Queen, and that was also the single that the logo first appeared on. It could be a reissue but would have been produced in a very short timeframe and be extremely rare.

I Let The Music Speak wrote: ...yellow label's ABBA swansong was Dancing Queen... There's a useful thread about the various Epic labels. Essentially the Epic label changed its base design, so sometimes you see records pressed later than the original release dates, in later colours. Later there were multiple initial pressings (for CBS and Epic etc.) and personally I always tried to get the paper versions if there was a choice.

Personally I doubt they ever made more So Long, so all the copies would be yellow.

Thanks, Alan-I was beginning to doubt myself, I always knew Dancing Queen was the last and first on yellow and orange.
