Greatest hits Album Cover 1975
International Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

UK (Alternative) Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

EricKMKY - 19.05.2012, 13:48

Both! :P

The 2 are Classic Covers !

But my favorite is the Bench Pic (ABBA's Abbey Road)

Btw interesting question!

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

     That's why I didn't put "both" on the answers, to make it a little bit difficult...  8)
I voted for the UK one. Not that I don't like the international cover, but the UK one is soooo... ABBA!!! So 70's!!! It has something!!!

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

Angeleyes - 19.05.2012, 13:51

Voted for the UK one. :D
A looooong time I thought the other one was a 'fake' album, because of the artwork...  :rotfl:

And so Unique because we see Benny and Frida on the Left side(pic) /Right side wich was very rare

I was very surprised when I saw the digital Remaster of that one some years ago... I've never expected that this one would come out again, because "The Singles/The first ten years" never issued again!
But it did... with the first cover. :?

I thought it was only the Scandinavian countries that had what you call the "international" cover? The UK and US, and I'm assuming a few others, got the park bench cover.

I like them both but went with what we had in the UK, the park bench.

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

ben5450 - 19.05.2012, 15:13

For being a part of that photo now, I voted the park bench without hesitation!

Well, you're probably right... I was a little bit confused because of wikipedia!
Now I've took a look here & I saw more covers in some European countries.
But I suppose those 2 were the "basic ones".

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

dizzymoe33 - 19.05.2012, 22:46

Yes here in the US we got the park bench cover which is what I voted for. It is a classic ABBA picture!!! :D

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

Carribean - 19.05.2012, 23:08

Not all countries released Greatest Hits.
There were countries releasing a The Best Of album such as Australia and New Zealand with a picture of 1974 on the cover as well as Germany and Holland (also with a pic from 1974).

I pick the bench one by the way!

The Park Bench for me.

I never knew the other one existed until I read about it on the old abbasite forum. Don't like it much.

I voted for International cover because that was the one I got back then and loved it so much. It was such a great thrill to watch it - the weird, the ultra weird artwork and when you open it - a big surprise to watch and watch and watch and wonder what was going on in the photo!

I was annoyed indeed with the fact I couldn't see Frida's face, but I got used to it.

The cartoon sleeve was used in Scandinavia, Spain, Argentina, Chile, Venezuala and Mexico. The park bench photo was used in UK, Ireland, Italy, South Africa, USA, Canada, El Salvador. Other countries released other compilations with different covers, as Ron said. And in almost all cases the track list was slightly different.

For me it's The UK release I have never really liked the cartoon sleeve.

I love them both, the cartoon one is so unusual, but I went for the Park Bench. Gill

abbangelears - 21.05.2012, 00:11

The international, by far, because it's funny. Actually it's one of my favourite Abba covers. The other one is too corny.

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

billydog - 21.05.2012, 10:34

I like them both but chose the Park Bench shot, Ive always loved how that LP looked. I think these two Greatest Hits albums were released because so many countries were coming up with their own "Best Of" compilations at the time and it was a canculated move to keep things "In House".

I Let The Music Speak - 21.05.2012, 11:53

Yes, they were worried about losing out to imports of the Best ofs, so rush-released it. I doubt Epic in the UK would have released a Best of as ABBA were only just taking off by then. How wrong they'd have been though!

I like how they're in completely the reverse order on the cartoon one to the park bench one. It meant Benny and Frida were on the back of one, but the front of the other. I wonder if that was deliberate or just a coincidence?

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

EricKMKY - 21.05.2012, 12:13

It would be great if they re-edit both CD's and LP's why not for the 40th anniversary... Hopes...

Coincidence I would think. The park bench photo was inside the gatefold of the Polar LP.

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

drimnagh - 21.05.2012, 14:44

Oh, God...no contest.. PARK BENCH, of course! And it is NOT 'corny' at all! It's ART.

Never really liked that ghoulish one much.. it's bonkers.. I guess it's fun but I find it ugly. Plus, they've made Frida's face look ugly, too and as we all know she is far from that- she's a beauty. It's certainly different though, so I'm glad it exists.

I love the park bench shot- it is indeed ABBA's 'Abbey Road' pic- as someone mentioned.

I voted for the international cover, the surrealistic painting by Hans Arnold. Wás that one the international cover? I believe that many countries had their own "Greatest Hits" compilations with different covers, but I´ve hardly seen the painting cover outside of Scandinavia. The cover with the painting is the original Polar cover and therefore the only official cover. As the "hardcore" of this forum is UK-based, I can understand the confusion and see why many prefer the wrong, non-official cover, the park bench one. You all feel this is the original cover, but it´s definitely not. I guess many many people didn´t get the humour of the painting cover. The scandinavian countries were much more "free" than other countries back then, morally speaking. Maybe other record companies than Polar thought the cover was far too risky (bizarre, sexy)) and made the choice to replace it by an ordinary, corny shot, which nowadays has become an iconic ABBA pic. Still, to me, the original painting cover is the only official one and I like it a lot.

Charles, see Ian's post above which I'm quoting in full:

The "international sleeve" is really the "official" or "Polar" sleeve as it was released by Polar. The "UK sleeve" is better termed the "alternative sleeve". However, I did read somewhere that it was designed by CBS UK so not completely incorrect to refer to it as the UK sleeve!

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

andrewlincs - 21.05.2012, 23:52

I voted Uk, it is iconic, and I love that album and the gatefold sleeve, the inner photograph of Frida TMHBALLFOA and her white poncho! It is an iconic look and agree with what others have said re:Abbey Roadish! The painting is rather cool, and I do have a thirtieth celebration CD with this artwork on it.

They had some great photo sessions did they not, and this was one of their best. I think they had photos in the same outfits next to a large door and canons if my memory serves me right......reaches for an Abba annual

i am partial to the park bench cover as it was the first ABBA album I ever bought in 1976. i still have it and occasionally play it. i remember Fernando being the deciding factor for my purchase because I was done buying 45's. i never saw the international cover until about 10 years ago.

Hans Arnold (1925-2010) also did horror artwork for Vecko-Revyn. Apparently there just has been a retrospective, "Hans Arnold - From horror to fairy tales", at Gallery Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm. Don't know, if it will be shown elsewhere too.

Out of these two versions I'd vote for the cartoon, but actually neither for me. As it was pointed out already we had different compilations in Germany, "The Best Of ABBA" and "The Very Best Of ABBA" (Musikladen cover) which features the park bench shot on the inside of the gatefold sleeve, large and glorious! I heavily played both compilations in my childhood and so they are very close to me. They always will remain the "official" ones for me. I only payed more attention to the UK (and other) versions when the cartoon version was re-released in 2006.

It's what you grow up with that stays with you so I can understand that! Like with the blue sleeve for The Album, to me that is the official sleeve. Therefore it is hard to judge the best cover here without being biased. If I'd not grown up with the park bench cover, I'd have probably voted for the cartoon. What I don't like about the park bench one is the tracklisting at the side - there's really no need for that on the front cover. The US CD issue from the 1980s has a clean black panel without the tracklisting, and looks much nicer.

I don't like this either.

Plus, and more important to me, you only see one couple on the front. Though it's the same with the cartoon version it's less obvious there because it doesn't show real people. The clue of the picture is lost anyway when cut in half because it's about the contrast or variety of human feelings/moods which the picture reflects. Having only one picture visible on first sight doesn't make any sense to me, it just destroys the composition of the photo.

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

drimnagh - 03.06.2012, 15:54

Perhaps it would have been better if it had been like this and condensed* so we could see both couples?

*condensed?!! Um, I think I mean resized.

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

I Let The Music Speak - 03.06.2012, 18:10

I think the cover works well as it is though. The contrast with the front cover to the back cover. As a kid of 6 when we got Greatest Hits in 1978, I thought the back cover was a bit rude and not really for my young eyes!! Seeing both sides together for me doesn't emphasise the contrast. But as the cover was, it did.

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

drimnagh - 04.06.2012, 11:36

^^You make a good point and I agree. But I simply posted that alternative picture because I gather some fans aren't so keen on only two members being visible and also that tracklisting on the side. Personally, I like the Greatest Hits cover just as it is- love the picture, don't mind the tracklisting on the side, don't mind 'waiting' to see Frida and Benny kissing.. I like the type face 'ABBA' logo, too.. everything about it is perfect to me and very much 'of it's time'.

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

Seanie(: - 04.06.2012, 11:39

Joe are you sure that alternative shot is real?!
It looks like Frida and Benny's head have been pasted from another picture

Although I think I would have liked it resized (or condensed ). Because I remember seeing a picture of Greatest Hits on a billboard in Los Angeles with Abba back in 76 and you can only see moody Bjorn and Agnetha - it's like that is the cover and no Benny and Frida!

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

drimnagh - 04.06.2012, 11:42

^I hadn't actually even considered that it wasn't real, Sean. But I'm almost certain it is the real thing.

drimnagh - 04.06.2012, 11:43

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

Seanie(: - 04.06.2012, 12:34

No, it is stil about the cover.
Fridas head looks real enough. But my problem is that how did Agnetha keep her pout for that long?

Because there's pictures to prove Frida an Benny kissed, then they leaned back further, and then smiled  That must have taken 30 seconds, how did Agnetha and Bjorn keep the same pose throghout?

Re: Greatest hits Album Cover 1975

drimnagh - 04.06.2012, 12:36

^If you look closely at the pictures of Bjorn and Agnetha looking all serious, there are subtle differences.

I agree. It's my all time favourite cover. I still look at it from time to time. Once I spent so much time wondering, what's been on Agnetha's mind at that particular moment.
