Non-ABBA Week
Hi all,

I am officially (for reasons unknown) having a non-ABBA week this week. I thought it would be quite fun to see if I can make it through the whole week without listening to any ABBA songs - including music videos, tribute songs and the like. It's Wednesday now, and it's going pretty well so far! A few cravings here and there, but nothing I can't handle. :lol:

Has anyone else ever done anything like this? Or does the thought of being deprived of ABBA for a whole 168 hours not bare thinking about? :wink:

*lyrics to If It Wasn't For The Nights come to mind* :P
Bonnie - 03.10.2007, 17:46

So why are you here then? :wink:
Skywatcher - 03.10.2007, 17:48

Well I figured I was allowed to come here. Certainly no ABBA songs this week, but I'm not sure about total isolation. :shock: :wink:
kitty-cat - 03.10.2007, 18:02

Ooohh, you came on here, so its not quite a non abba week is it? :twisted: I could not do it i'm afraid, i cant go for a day without listening to abba or agnetha/frida, and i definately could not go without coming on here :roll: A non abba week to me would be no music, no abbasites, nothing.... Not possible :lol:

Simsalabim - 03.10.2007, 19:03

Good luck to you...!

I haven't even thought about trying that... :lol:
Angeleyes - 03.10.2007, 19:13

Sounds good!

I do not listen that much to abba's music anymore, because I'm here on this site almost every day! :lol:

So, I think I easily can have a non-abba-music week...
Lammer - 03.10.2007, 19:16

Nope. Sometimes I go a day or two without listening, if things are really busy. My ABBA time is often my "escape" and a moment to relax from the activities of the day. You could try this: Go for a week without listening to a particular CD/album. Afterwards, you'll appreciate hearing the songs again.

What will you do next week? Give up air? Water? Food? :lol:

:)
Skywatcher - 03.10.2007, 19:36

Quote: Go for a week without listening to a particular CD/album.

Ah yes, I realised that. All the more reason to take the week off! I am quite looking forward to listening to The Visitors (album) on Monday morning - woohoo! :lol:
platobird - 03.10.2007, 20:47

Wait a minute! :!: This could be a poorly disguized attempt to get attention from others on the forum by doing something that no ABBA fan in their right mind could do. :lol: Otherwise, as Bonnie wrote, why is he here??

We have no way of verifying the truth of his claims. Can we see the dark circles forming under his eyes from sleepless nights? No! Can we see his hands shaking as he fights to restrain them from playing that special CD? No! Will any one see him at the pub tonight washing down his fifth Irish with yet another pint as he tries to subdue the pain of separation? No! :cop: None of these!!

Let's have some proof :!: :boogie: :rotfl2:
Carribean - 03.10.2007, 20:50

I remember a non-ABBA month not too long ago and it was very refreshing getting back to these songs after a while. Did me good!

:D
benfridgirl - 03.10.2007, 21:05

i probably will be dead at friday already :dead:

and a non-abba week ? how came that idea up to you ? :axe: :stupid:

hehe good luck :wink:
johnny59 - 03.10.2007, 21:18

I barely dare to say it.

In my dark past there probably were non-ABBA times lasting longer than a year.
platobird - 03.10.2007, 21:40

You probably suffered deep psychological trauma causing you to sponsor a website for suffering ABBA fans. :lol:

Gee, I hope that Skywatcher doesn't hurt himself with this stunt. :wink:

Lol, oh no no no, I shall endeavor to play an ABBA CD right away at the first sign of permanent psychological trauma. :P

I didn't suffer any trauma but Agnetha woke me up from my 100 years everlasting sleep when she came and sang "Love me with all your heart" into my ears. This was in 2004.

Her voice would wake me from the dead.
restareabear - 03.10.2007, 21:50

Sir Johnny, don't be embarrassed (or hesitant, or whatever the right word is). Several other threads on this forum indicate many of us "older" members were like that in the past, for at least some period of time. Probably mostly in the late 1980s when even the solo albums stopped and there was no internet to open the doors and keep us informed as we have today. It was a "dead" period for ABBA music and news, for lack of a better word. The late 70's and '80s music wasn't really old enough to experience a "revival" until at least the mid '90s, was it? (There has to be some water under the bridge before it can become a craze or fad again).

The fact that we all returned to ABBA attests to their quality and excellence. And our good taste.

With that said, back to the topic at hand. I'm not sure I go through an ABBA-less week anymore. Even if a week goes by that I don't specifically play an ABBA or ABBA-related cd, I listen to a lot of music (radio, cds, vinyl). It seems an ABBA tune appears somewhere at some time during the week. Since I'm also on here, and searching out ABBA collectibles elsewhere, and enjoying them at home, even if I don't play an ABBA cd I can't really say it's an ABBA-less week. I almost get as much joy from those things as I do from hearing them sing. Almost.
Maxi-saxi - 04.10.2007, 04:50

Well the longest I have gone with out listening to ABBA would be a couple of days.

But I did manage to play Agnetha's MCB.

Maxi-saxi

For me it's good Music Usually coming home to unwind after work, which at times can be a pain up the a***.

I put on a CD Of ABBA or one Of the Girls.
ABBAnator - 04.10.2007, 11:19

Who's ABBA?

Bruce :P
PeopleNeedLove - 04.10.2007, 11:41

^^ Quick Google search turned this up, Bruce........

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABBA

Apparently, they recorded some songs back in the 70s and 80s. Those girls look pretty cute........ :lol:

~~~~~~~
Longest I've ever gone without ABBA?? 3 days- and I wouldn't want to try it again........ :P
Oh THAT ABBA! Yes, they were quite good weren't they. :wink:
I'm glad he meant the group because there is no way I'm going a week without my Dillsill! :twisted:
Dillsill is pickled herring ... :P
(Sorry Skywatcher, I rather fancy myself a comedian sometimes ... but of course that depends on who you talk to ... :roll: )
Toni - 04.10.2007, 13:22
Ah that is ABBA! I always wondered what they are all talking about for almost a year on this site.
:idea1:
I've try not to have a non abba week, its very easy really.
:rotfl2:
As for having a non Abba week, I think I might get admitted to A&E with some kind of illness by the end!!!!!!!!!!!
drimnagh - 04.10.2007, 14:15
Yegods!
Go ABBA Cold turkey? 'Just Like That'? :lol: Are you mad? :shock: :wink:
Never!
Ok, I might give it a go...but I bet I start getting all edgy and stuff..
:lol: Well, good it is so because the Abba in the picture says *since 1838* :shock:
I am sort of having my non ABBA week right now, though there has been a little ABBA here and there..
But whenever I go on holiday, it is usually 2 weeks without ABBA with the smart exception last year when I smuggled an ABBA cd with me, and I conveniently FORGOT to remind hubby to bring his cds along. :D We listened to Honey honey and The Visitors songs a thousand times! :lol:
DancingQueen - 04.10.2007, 17:45
I think I can yes. No songs, no videos, no talks.. Yes, I'm pretty much sure I can, but it depends on the matter.
I love their music, so I won't be having a 'non ABBA week' just for fun, because I enjoy listening to them even more!
The only thing I'm probably addicted to is coffee.. :lol:
Maxi-saxi - 04.10.2007, 23:51
Don't scare me like that!
I'm confused enough....
That brings to mind the title of a Carpenters song-I Won't Last A Day Without You.
No worries Debbie. It's pickled herring, not pickled ABBA members. :P
It's hard to read in the picture, so I blew up a portion of the label for you:
I did that (unwillingly) in August when we moved). I had packed my ABBA CDs so well, I could not find them. At least I could hum to myself, but I'm certainly no Frida or Agnetha, heh. Eventually , after two weeks, I found my CDs and went on an ABBA binge.
I will have nightmares about that Emmanuelle! :sob1:
Heart Attack Material.
So glad you decided to have a ABBA Binge.
Ahhhh I made it! By gosh, I was at that CD shelf at 11.59, finger on CD 1 of 8...though I feel I may have overdone my little ABBA catch-up, it was non-stop until 2am. :shock: I started with Super Trouper for some random reason - I had been dying to listen to it all week - and finished up with Just Like That. Last, and certainly the best! :lol:
MarryMeAgnetha - 14.10.2007, 09:10
This is a most amusing thread. I've gone for periods of time without ABBA, but usually by accident -- just because I'm really busy or something. It's always so much fun to come back to them when I haven't heard them for a while.
As a matter of fact, I often must make it a point to listen to other stuff because it's so easy for me to listen to just ABBA and Beatles all the time. But there's so much great music out there, I don't want to miss out on it.
NinaPrettyBallerina - 15.10.2007, 18:30
hey, i quite had lots of non-ABBA/Agnetha/Frida weeks this year in spring...it was really horrible but i did it for a god reason...
okay you`re probably wondering, what good reason is there not to listen to abba, so thats why:
my favourite football team was quite in a scare to be relegated from 'bundesliga'(which is the best german league) to league two, which would really be horrible. when it comes to football i`m very very supersticious, and i have lots of 'rituals' like putting on the same shirt for every match for good luck and things like that. well and when i really really feared they might be relegated i was thinking about what i could do, or sacrifice for them staying in the league and winning the rest of the matches, so i said to myself(and to the higher power which perhaps exist, the football god :wink: ) i will not listen to abba for a week, so they will win, and guess what? they won!!! next week i listened to abba again, cause i couldn't stand it any longer without abba!!!
well, but unfortunately they lost the next match again...so i tried not to listen to abba again, and it worked out again!!!so i didn't listen to abba until the end of the season, and they did so well, won all the matches and finished on place nine!!!
so it was really worth it, but so hard!!!after that i think i listened to abba non-stop and was watching the movie and the videos a thousand times...
well, good for me that here in germany they play so much abba music on the radio, because that was my little gap in the 'contract', because it's surely not my fault if they play abba on the radio, is it :wink:
well, nowadays, i use to try to not listen to abba on match days, cause somehow that brings luck aswell...
okay, i'm really a football freak, i know...
but as many people here already said, it's really refreshing not to listen to abba for a while, then everything sounds new and fresh again, but i really wouldn't do that too often, cause i really can't imagine a life without our fab four!!!
:agnetha: :bjorn: :benny: :frida:
Angeleyes - 18.10.2007, 17:01
Ay, I will have my non-abba week from tomorrow till next friday, when I'm with my family on holiday in Germany...
My husband and children don't want me to play Abba-tapes in the car :cry: , so I think we will listen again to Nena's "Willst du mit mir gehen" tape...
Which is for me a good choice when I can't listen to Abba. :)
Maybe I can turn on the radio, hoping some DJ would play Abba? :lol: :wink:
Lammer - 18.10.2007, 18:52
Angeleyes wrote: Maybe I can turn on the radio, hoping some DJ would play Abba?
Well, if you ever vacation in the USA, be sure to bring your own tapes/CDs. The likelihood of a DJ playing an ABBA song HERE is very small!! :(
Good luck, poor girl. Maybe your family can force you to leave behind your tapes, but they can't keep you from singing the songs to yourself!
:)
Thanks Laura! I didn't think of that... :lol:
platobird - 18.10.2007, 20:27
The car now has satellite radio (Sirius), and although my son doesn't enjoy ABBA, he likes to listen to the '70s channel. Occasionally (not often enough) they play an ABBA song. I refuse to change the station. :D
He gets three trips with the '70s, and I get one with my CDs. :D Of course, when he's not in the car, it's all ABBA (and Agnetha). :D Interestingly, after listening to the '60s, '70s, '80s and '90s, I don't find anything I enjoy as much as ABBA. They were definitely unique. :applause:
Don't know it they have satellite radio in Europe?? 8)
I've never heard of it, but maybe we have it here, I don't know...
I think I need a german 70's channel...Who knows one? :lol:
Angeleyes - 27.10.2007, 11:47
Back again! Have had a wonderful time in Germany even without Abba... :lol:
But...on wednesday I had a little Abba-moment. In Trier I bought a chord book "The Very Best of Abba" for playing songs on piano, guitar and ofcourse for singing! :wink: That same evening I took a little time for myself to watch television, I felt into a music programm and after a videoclip of Robbie Williams (Gill! :D ), there was "The Winner Takes It All"...! :excited:
