    Item 8.01 Other Events

Cyberlux Corporation today announced that it has been awarded a supplier agreement from The Boeing Company for lighting equipment in support of the Secure Border Initiative net (SBInet) project. Cyberlux was awarded the supplier agreement based on the Company's response to the SBInet VICD 605002 request for quote (RFQ) for mobile lighting systems. Cyberlux quoted the BrightEye Portable Visible and Covert 10 Meter Tower Lighting System for intended use along the Mexican and Canadian borders as an added level of security for Customs and Border Patrol personnel and as an added level of deterrence for potential border violators. As part of The Boeing Company Basic Ordering Agreement, Cyberlux provided quotes of $25,256 to $31,185 per unit in 100 unit increments from 1-500 units. Under this Agreement, the unit demand for Cyberlux products is solely determined by The Boeing Company.

And a newspaper today shows maybe, maybe, maybe a possible indirect connection between Homeland Secuity Project and Cyberlux.

NEW DD: Glitch Renders 'Virtual Fence' Unusable
By ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN Associated Press – 12 hours ago

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Because of a software glitch, the first high-tech "virtual fence" on the nation's borders remains inoperable, three months after its scheduled debut.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he is withholding further payment to the prime contractor, Boeing Co., until the success of the pilot project stretching 28 miles near the border southwest of Tucson.

Nine 98-foot towers laden with radar, sensors and sophisticated cameras have been built in an area heavily trafficked by illegal immigrant and drug smugglers. The towers, each a few miles apart, are intended to deter or detect border crossers and potential terrorists and enhance the ability of Border Patrol agents to catch them.

More testing is expected by early October, Chertoff told the House Committee on Homeland Security this month in Washington.

"We are now looking to begin acceptance testing in about a month," Chertoff said — meaning the point at which contracting officials give the go-ahead for testing — "and we will then kick the tires again."

Of Chertoff's remarks, Boeing spokeswoman Deborah Bosick said only: "We're working with our customer to solve some remaining technical issues."

The virtual fence is the first stage of a plan to smother the Mexican and Canadian borders with 1,800 such towers, all aimed at enabling the U.S. Border Patrol to pinpoint crossings and improve their ability to intercept crossers.

About three-fourths of the $20 million cost for the 28-mile project has been paid, homeland security officials said. The fencing was announced as part of a $67 million initial contract awarded last September to Boeing, the bulk going to set up program management, systems engineering and planning support.

The virtual fence system is supposed to coordinate camera, sensor and radar sightings and provide a common operating picture to agents on the ground to intercept those entering the country illegally.

"The integration of all the systems into a common operating picture continues to be the challenge," said Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke. Boeing has put new people on the project who are working to resolve the problems, he said.

In June, with the towers up, a radar problem caused a brief delay. Then, federal officials said there was a software problem.

In his Sept. 5 testimony, Chertoff said the original plan was to begin acceptance testing in June "so that we could make a determination that we were satisfied with the product and take possession of it I think in July."

Acceptance testing is "a little bit like buying a car. We didn't want to get stuck with a lemon," Chertoff said.

The individual components worked well, but the system integration did not, he said.

Boeing has "retooled their team on the ground and replaced some of the managers. ... They are now working through the problems of system integration as we speak," Chertoff said. "I think they put their A-team in place to do it."

As for the testing, Chertoff added, "We should get it done well before the end of the year."

    http://lighterfootstep.com/best-enviro-tech-of-2007.html

For fans of the environment, 2007 has been a very good year. And it's only March.

Altruism has always been an important driver of environmental technology. But with public attention focused on climate change and the world's finite resources -- coupled with commercial demand for energy-saving solutions -- the marketplace has reached a tipping point in terms of leading innovation. Each week brings new announcements of promising technologies, and quite a few will find their way to the consumer.

While it seems odd to write a yearly retrospective article before the spring thaw, 2007 is setting itself up as a watershed in enviro-tech. Lighter Footstep has gathered up what we consider the five best developments so far. So hum the Jetson's theme song, and let's take a quick trip to the future.

    Hybrid Organic/Inorganic LEDs

CyberluxNot exactly a catchy name, is it? Perhaps that's why Cyberlux, the company which has developed this new technology, plans to market their new invention under the trade names "Hybrid White Light" (HWL) and "Hybrid Multicolor Light" (HML). Basically, these are super-efficient light-emitting diodes similar to the tiny lights you find on electronic equipment or keychain flashlights.

Cyberlux has bigger plans. They'll license the technology to conventional lighting manufacturers, who will bring these super-efficient little gizmos to market as bona fide competitors to incandescent bulbs and CFLs.

LEDs are wildly economical. The current generation compares favorably to CFLs in their power stinginess. So far, though, the problem has been cost. Nobody is too enthusiastic about screwing an $80 lightbulb into Grandma's favorite reading lamp.

These new models actually beat CFLs in the lumen-per-watt race. Better yet, they'll be far cheaper to produce, thanks to the replacement of the LED's traditional innards with a thin layer of polymer or organic material.

The new lights have a lot of potential advantages over CFLs in addition to efficiency. They don't contain mercury, for instance. They're small. And unlike CFLs, LEDs don't mind being placed in high-vibration environments.

At the risk of a pun, the future is bright for HWL and HMLs. We just have to keep our acronyms straight.

Cyberlux awarded government contract for LED lighting
    28 Mar 2006
Cyberlux has received a GSA Federal Supply Schedule contract for energy-saving LED lighting products.
Solid-state lighting manufacturer Cyberlux Corporation has been awarded a US government contract for LED-based energy-saving lighting products through the General Services Administration (GSA) Federal Supply Schedule.

The contract allows Cyberlux to sell its LED-based Aeon task and accent lighting products as a primary contractor to any US Government purchasing organization. The Aeon products address the three pervasive problems with conventional halogen and fluorescent task and accent lighting – short operating life, significant heat generation and energy inefficiency.

The GSA estimates $1 million in purchasing activity for Cyberlux in the energy savings task and accent category, based on prior contractor sales reporting. The contract period is March 2006 through March 2011.

Cyberlux Corporation was awarded contract GS-07F-9409S in response to GSA Solicitation 7FCI-F8-03-0056-B to provide energy saving task and accent lighting to US government organizations purchasing lighting products under the multiple award Schedule 56 solicitation for Buildings and Building Materials and Supplies.

“The award of the GSA Federal Supply Schedule contract is a significant milestone for Cyberlux. We view this GSA contract as an extension of our government sales which began with the United States Air Force Raven Watchdog Advanced Illumination System project,” observed Donald Evans, chief executive officer of Cyberlux.

“With Cyberlux now having primary contractor status to supply the Aeon products, we expect our sales to exceed the GSA estimates. We also anticipate sales of the Raven Watchdog system to expand when other branches of the military can purchase the systems through the newly attained GSA listing.”

Last fall, Cyberlux demonstrated its Watchdog Portable Covert Illumination System, an advanced lighting security system selected by the US Air Force’s Air Mobility Battlelab following a competitive review process that included 25 proposals from other companies.

The system illuminates an exterior boundary of 300 x 300 feet with either visible light or covert infrared light visible through night-vision goggles (NVGs). It was designed to protect military assets on the ground, such as an airplane, by creating a “lightless” zone around the asset while illuminating the surrounding protection boundary. In covert illumination mode, the system increases the visibility of NVGs by almost 4-fold.

Cyberlux developed advanced optics, thermal and energy management algorithms and lightweight mobilization packaging that maximized the system’s performance to meet the rigorous Battlelab requirements including a high-power light source, mounted on a tripod and powered by lithium ion batteries. The portable package weighs less than 50 pounds. It can be carried to remote locations and deployed rapidly to provide boundary security lighting.
