Kirtsy MacColl
Ok I never was a fan when Kirsty MacColl made her records. But I was introduce to her this year. And now can't get enough of her.
I've got Titanic days, Tropical Brainstorm and Kite. Don't ask me which is my fav. At the moment I couldn't tell you. But love the track Free World.
There are so many good tracks on these Albums.
What do you think of Kirsty MacColl?

First time I heard of her was about 1983. She sung "Terry" and I liked this song. She had also something to do with Tracey Ullman, one of my favorite singers from that time.
In 1984 she was one of the persons who helped Frida with her great album "Shine". Kirsty was co-writer of the songs "One Little Lie", "The Face", "Chemistry Tonight" and "That´s Tough". She even did the backing vocals on the whole album.
One year later "A New England" was a very good song of Kirsty. Then I heard nothing more of her.

I never heard of her until I listened to Fridas Album Shine.
Then a friend lent me a home made CD compilation including some of her songs
I quite like her work

New England is a great song to, which CD is on. I have both songs on The Best Of

I was thinking of starting a Kirsty MacColl thread but found this old thing Nantes started. Its been inactive for a long while but thought it was more appropriate to continue here. :?: .
Walking Down Madison is an huge favourite of mine from her 1991 album "Electric Landlady".
Kirsty died in december 2000 when she was killed by a speedboat while swimming in Mexican waters with her two young sons. :(

As Long As You Hold Me was written by Kirsty's friend Billy Bragg.
It can be found on The Best of collection from 2005.
Kirsty was married to Steve Lillywhite who produced Frida's Shine album.

Kirsty's version of "Days" was a big hit here in the 80's.

I love Kirsty MacColl she was one of the very best female singer songwriters the UK ever produced and is sadly missed .
Her 1989 album "Kite" is one of the best albums from the 80's 8)
Her father was also a great songwriter Ewan MacColl he wrote this classic song 8)
A US # 1 for Roberta Flack in 1972 and covered by many more artists over the years .

They Don't Know (or maybe they do  ). Kirsty wrote this and as Toni mentioned it was recorded by Tracey Ullman who had a hit with it.

I am glad that this thread has been started, she was probably one of the most underrated British female singer/songwriters ever.
I have loved her stuff since There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop, which has already been mentioned. My favourite track of hers is one that has again been mentioned earlier & that is Days, which she didn't write, it is a cover of an old Kinks song.
I love the humour she puts into her lyrics, such as "Don't Come The Cowboy With Me Sunny Jim". Also she duets with the Pouges on what many people class as the best Christmas record ever Fairytale of New York". (Sorry I don't know how to post links from YouTube) Gill

One of the sad things about her early career in the 80's was she had all kinds of problems with recording contracts , she was unable to record for long periods of time in her own right due too this .
Thats why she did a lot of songwriting for other people like Frida and backing vocals or quest apperances on other peoples records .
Think there's an eight year gap between her first album and her second "Kite" in 1989 .
It's really bad how record compaines can have so much power over an artist like that
Who knows what albums she might have recorded if she had been allowed .

I love the way kirsty experimented with different kinds of music, from the Irish folky stuff to the almost indie early 80's recordings. Her journeys into latin influences always worked really well in my opinion.
This is Mambo De La Luna from the Tropical Brainstorm album.

She had all sorts of legal problems with her recording contracts Stuart .
Kirsty was part of Stiff records if i remember right when she began her recording career in 1979 .
Her debut album from 1981 is still tied up in legal problems , it was re-released in 1985 i think for a short period but with five different songs on it from the original album , so it's still yet to see the light of day on cd in it's original form .
Also when she was recording with Frida she was working on a electro solo album which would have been her second album , many of her fans see this as a lost album .
So yes she recorded in many different styles .
The legal problems around her death are still on going too , there is real mystery around just who was driving the speed boat that killed her , many believe there is a cover up at Mexican government level .
David :)

Yes I remember A New England being on the stiff label David and her tragic death was horrible. Ive been reading her mother Jean's book "Sun on The Water" which I have to keep taking breaks on but, how her young son's weren't also killed or badly injured physically is a miracle.

Dear John was apparently dropped from her Titanic Days period because
it was apparently too touching as it was about her recent divorce. Since Kirsty's death its resurfaced on various compilations. Lovely song.

I love the later songs with the latin feel. You can just tell that she was really into the life and music of Latin America. She manages to blend the feel and rhythms of that region with her very British out look on life brilliantly. Gill

Just to let any Kirsty fans in the UK know there is a 1 hour special on Radio 2 at 10.00pm on Monday 20 December. It's called "Kirsty acColl: A Celebration". Billy Bragg (who wrote New England) celebrates her life and legacy to mark the 10th anniversery of her death. Gill

Thanks for posting all of these videos Stuart :D . Walking Down Madison is one of my favourite Kirsty MacColl songs. My favourite Kirsty song is Days. I have always liked The Kinks' original version, but Kirsty's version is so beautiful and the video is wonderful. It is one of my alltime favourite songs. New England is another one of my favourite Kirsty songs 8).

Thanks for posting that version of Walking Down Maddison Sut, as you probably realise by now I am not usually a fan of remixes, but that one is beautiful, as i was listening to it I was thinking I can't see how the rap section is going to work - clearly the guy who did the remix felt the same way as he has left it out  .
Lisa I love Days as well - not only a beautiful tune but lovely words as well. I can't list all my favourite ones as there are far too many, but at the moment I am really loving He's On The Beach and In These Shoes. Gill

Days is one of my favourite songs of all time Gill. It's in my top twenty songs of all time 8). It's a marvellous song, and such a shame that it didn't even reach the UK top ten when it was released. It only reached number 12, when first released and then number 42 when it was re-released in 1995. In These Shoes is another favourite Kirsty song of mine too 8).
Here's another one of my favourites :love4:.
