Donna Summer
In the second half of the seventies Donna Summer was the undisputed 'Queen of Disco'. In those years, she churned out one instant disco classic after another.
From the groundbreaking 'I feel love', to powerhouse dance-classics such as 'Last dance', 'MacArthur Park' (the vocals on this one are amazing), the rock-edged 'Hot stuff' and 'Bad girls' (which was almost passed to Cher). She also dueted with Barbra Streisand on 'No more tears (enough is enough)'.
In the eighties she had a few more hits such as the Quincy Jones-produced 'State of independance', 'She works hard for the money' and 'This time I know it's for real', still her seventies output remains most memorable.
What are your thoughts on Donna Summer?
Like her or not, this classic performance on dutch TV of her breakthrough song 'Love to love you baby' should give you a couple of minutes of fun. Check out that male dancer, the choreography and those costumes. Hilarious!

I've got Donna Summer's greatest Hits which is a great album. All the classics you mention Hades are on it.
She was a brilliant disco singer and I listened to her alot back in the seventies.
The best song for me is the brilliant MacArthur Park
Re: Donna Summer
Anonymous - 17.09.2007, 23:40
I like three of her songs:
I Remember Yesterday
Love's Unkind
Hot Stuff
MacArthur Park is a good song. but I prefer the Four Tops version.
I Feel Love and Love To Love You are rather annoying. They are just about her moaning over an insistent beat.
To Turn The Stone is also a great song, but I don't think it was released at the time. Instead it was recorded by that dark haired singer from ABBA.

Donna Summer's another great singer from yesteryear and my teenage years lol.
I agree with Einar regarding Love's Unkind, a great soul track. In fact for me the best albums were the early ones, I Remember Yesterday, Love Trilogy and the one where she's hanging off the moon (which I own, I just can't think of the name right now, Spring Affair is a lead track!)
I Feel Love is acknowledged as a ground-breaking song, but there's not enough variation vocally to interest me much despite the incredible techno backing. Likewise the Love to Love You moans get a bit tiresome.
Just thinking now, the other great album from the 70s was the one with I Love You on it, Fairytale High etc... God I can't remember the name right now either but it's in my CD cabinet. A selection of tracks, one spinning into the next.
It's interesting how she changed with the times... From pure Eurodisco, she rode the wave of discontent about disco music inthe late 70s and added rock elements with Hot Stuff which seemed to keep her fan base and then extend it.
Her later collaborations with Stock Aitken seemed more about them than her. But I did like the track Dinner With Gershwin. It's got very clever lyrics, also Unconditional Love.
Time to get a really good Best of collection of some of the other tracks not just the known ones I think!

One of the best Donna Summer compilations around is in my opinion 'On the Radio - greatest hits vol. 1 & 2". Originally released in 1979 as a double LP, this obviously only covers her seventies output.
A nice feature is that every track flows into the next, so you can boogie down to these classics non-stop.
1. On the Radio
2. Love to Love You Baby
3. Try Me I Know We Can Make It
4. I Feel Love
5. Our Love
6. I Remember Yesterday
7. I Love You
8. Heaven Knows
9. Last Dance
10. Mac Arthur Park
11. Hot Stuff
12. Bad Girls
13. Dim All the Lights
14. Sunset People
15. No More Tears
16. On the Radio [Long Version]
In 1993, a more comprehensive double-CD was released, 'The Donna Summer Anthology', that included just about every hit she ever had, most of them in the long versions. The 'On the Radio' compilation remains my favourite, because of its flow. There isn't a weak track on there. With the 'Anthology' I often skip disc 2 of the set, athough there are a few highlights on there as well.
Disc: 1
1. Love To Love You
2. Could It Be Magic
3. Try Me, I Know We Can Make It
4. Spring Affair
5. Love's Unkind
6. I Feel Love
7. Once Upon A Time
8. Rumour Has It
9. I Love You
10. Last Dance
11. Macarthur Park
12. Heaven Knows
13. Hot Stuff
14. Bad Girls
15. Dim All The Lights
16. Sunset People
Disc: 2
1. No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)
2. On The Radio
3. The Wanderer
4. Cold Love
5. I'm A Rainbow
6. Don't Cry For Me Argentina
7. Love Is in Control (Finger On The Trigger)
8. State Of Independence
9. She Works Hard For The Money
10. Unconditional Love
11. There Goes My Baby
12. Supernatural Love
13. All Systems Go
14. This Time I Know It's For Real
15. I Don't Wanna Get Hurt
16. When Love Cries
17. Friends Unknown
18. Carry On
Re: Donna Summer
merton - 30.09.2007, 06:39
Thanks Hades, I have seen those albums around so I suppose I should get them. I didn't realise the On the Radio album tracks ran into each other.
Coincidentially I heard today in a cafe the extended version of Could It Be Magic from her first album which now makes me want to track that down!
Nothing beats a good 70s disco sound, complete with those violins...

Her 1989 release "Another Place and Time" is Stock, Aiken, and Waterman at their production peak, imo. Unfortunately she chose to go in another direction with her followup release and later regretted it (according to a friend of mine that knows her and was slated to mix her next release had it been a SAW production).
Check out her Christmas CD "Christmas is Here". This is Donna's voice at it peak.

I came across this news via Facebook and was truly shocked by the news, as I didn't know that she had been ill! Of course I am a huge fan of her Greatest Hits, and the only studio album I have is a vinyl copy of the SAW produced Another Space And Time, which I am going to dig out later. This Time I Know It's For Real.
So many wonderful recordings, I love Dinner With Gershwin, Hot Stuff, She Works Hard For The Money and the classic Bad Girls. I know that I Feel Love is iconic, and I love to dance to that track, but it's not my favourite.
Music stands the test of time, and this gifted and talented artist has left the world a legacy of great music. Time to put on the Greatest Hits and dance in homage. RIP and thank you x x

Truely sad news, I was not aware that she was ill, so it was a huge shock when I heard. Donna was one of those artists who's music I liked whenever I heard it, but for some reason have only ever bought one album (She Works Hard For The Money) and one single (Heaven Knows), I have no idea why. Typing this I have realised that I have never bought my favourite song of hers - State Of Independence.

Incredibly sad.
Re: Donna Summer

I heard it on the early evening news and there was no mention of her being ill previously so it was a sudden shock. She was the "Queen of disco music", was the first female to have three consecutive US #1 albums, and had eight consecutive US Top 5 million selling singles in 1978-80.
Personally I loved her hits since she hit the charts with Love To Love You Baby, my favourites remain Love's Unkind and I Feel Love.

In actual fact, I don't think there's a song of hers that I dislike! Some legacy.

I agree with the shock everyone has felt about Donna's death, I didnt even know she was ill. I had been out all day yesterday so didnt hear the news til late and to be honest, I hardly watch the news these days as its so depressing. I have to say, her music has been around and part of my life for a long time and, interestingly, a lot of her output stands the test of time.
I think the first song I personally became aware of Donna was Macarthur Park, but I like many others. Love's Unkind, State Of Independance, This Time I Know Its For Real, I Remember Yesterday, Hot Stuff....an endless list really. RIP Donna.
Sadly we do seem to be losing a lot of iconic female singers lately :( .

I was amazed to read this news, because I didn´t know she had cancer, but I´m not shocked. Why are we always so shocked, devastated or whatever when someone (famous) dies? I consider death as a part of life.
Back to Donna, one of the pop icons of my youth. I consider her oeuvre at least to be "uneven". I like her "Live & More", "Bad Girls" era and the album she did with Quincy Jones (with e.g. "State of Independance"). But I didn´t like her early disco period at all and her Stock, Aitken & Waterman album doesn´t move me. Donna had a very distinctive voice, very easily recognizable.
I believe her career started over here in The Netherlands, with the strange song "The Hostage" and some very weird tv appearances to promote that song.
Goodbye Donna!

Charles wrote: Why are we always so shocked, devastated or whatever when someone (famous) dies? I consider death as a part of life.
I'm sure most people are aware of that, I certainly am! But of course it's only natural to feel shock when death rears it's head. Death, for most people, isn't something we like to think about or discuss- at least in the Western world. Plus, she was still relatively young and kept her illness hidden. Therefore, I think it's understandable to be taken aback a little when something like this is announced in the news. It doesn't mean we're all not aware of our own (and others) mortality. Death is inevitable for all of us. Of course it would be good if we were more open about it, like in other cultures- much healthier.
If she'd been old and ill for a while, we might feel and express ourselves differently but as it is she was still considered vital and full of zest so naturally it was  to hear this sad news. Well, I certainly was stunned to hear of her passing!
Re: Donna Summer
abbagav - 18.05.2012, 14:51
I thought there'd be a thread for Donna on the go here so I've been looking through everyone's comments and feel much the same really - totally shocked and saddened. "I Feel Love" was I think the very first single I ever bought back in 1977 and I've followed her career ever since. What a voice. One of the best vocalists ever - without a doubt.
I think I shall get my sparkly boob tube out of the dry-cleaners and have a twirl under the old glitter-ball this weekend in her memory.

Like other people on here, I too was shocked to hear of Donna's passing. Along with ABBA, Donna was a big part of my teenage years and beyond. Although I haven't heard much since Melody Of Love in '95, I can't believe she's gone, I just loved the person she was and the songs she sang. On The Radio-Greatest Hits was the first LP I bought (other than ABBA's) in January 1980, and it was the first time I'd heard songs segued. I played it constantly, then got into buying her other LP's, singles, 12"s, and then cd's. In fact, my collection of Donna's vinyl records is bigger than my ABBA vinyl collection-I'll photograph it one day and put it on here, but not right now. Rest in peace, Donna, the ultimate Queen of Disco.

Universal bought the rights to all of her non-Universal back catalog up to “Another Place and Time” and reissued most of not all of her LPs on CDs via the Casablanca label in 1994 or something like that. I’m not sure about Mistaken Identity because I never liked that LP at all.

People of a certain age, mid to late 40s, (and that includes me!) will have grown up with Donna. Very sad news, but she leaves many classic recordings for us to remember her by. I've kept all my old vinyl Donna Summer albums and 45s. I'll be playing most of them tomorrow. The late 70s was her golden era. I didn't buy or care for the Another place album, which was Stock, Aitken and Waterman, not Donna's true style.
Those late 70s albums are Donna at her best. Bad Girls is a superb double LP. So many classics, Hot Stuff, Dim all the lights, Sunset People, Walk away, On my honour, so many more! 8)
I remember yesterday and Once upon a time are the best runners up. Superb albums.
Down deep inside and On the radio are two of her best singles. 8) 8)
Rich.

Quite right Rich.
It's so sad to be losing some our great "divas" far too early!
I was a huge fan of Donna Summer especially in her disco years and with the work she did with Giorgio Moroder. Apparently she tried to distance herself from this years later, but to me the thumping extended mixes from Love Trilogy and Four Seasons of Love were on a par with the disco "symphonies" presented by other Euro greats of the time including French maestro Cerrone and Alex Costandinos and Silver Convention's Sylvester Levay.
Lyrically the songs might have been very simple but the choice of instrumentation and the musical arrangement was always full of variation and felt almost transcendental at times.
The album Once Upon A Time was another Donna classic where slabs of disco pop segued into another. No breather for the listener! And I am especially fond of I Remember Yesterday, the title track reminescent of the style of 70s disco classic Cherchez La Femme, and the track Love's Unkind with its 60s girl group sound.
The amazing thing about Donna was that she was able to survive when the musical landscape charged after disco collapsed and 80s synth rock and pop sounds became popular. Hot Stuff and Bad Girls helped her cross over into new territory. I thought that was an extraordinary feat when so many other artists fell by the wayside...
Her light did dim eventually though two tracks I especially liked from that time frame were Unconditional Love and Dinner with Gerswhin (clever interplay of lyrics there). And there was Heaven Knows and the Stock Aitken Waterman tracks too.
I hope that the album Thank God It's Friday which features Last Dance does get a re-release eventually. The movie wasn't much apparently( I didn't see it) but the soundtrack contained some great disco thumpers of the era.
Donna Summer gone too soon but always remembered.

Donna Summer was a great artist, and composer with a great voice. There's no doubt for me that she vocally belonged to best there
ever is or will be. I am really shocked by her death as I didn't know she
was suffering from cancer. Her voice will be truly missed, not only by me
but by many others as well. May she rest in peace.
Donna, thank you for all the beautiful moments you gave by sharing your
songs with us.

For all fans of Donna--This comes from the webmaster at www.donna-tribute.com
it's only $.99 or $1.29 Lets show our support on Wednesday.
Ok - the decision has been made. Wednesday May 23 will be Last Dance Wednesday. For all these years Donna has sent us home to Last Dance, and now it is our turn to do the same for her. This is what we are going to do, on Wednesday (the day of Donna's funeral) everyone should go to iTunes, AMAZON, Napster, Rhapsody or whatever other MP3 retailer you like and buy at least one copy of Last Dance. Get your family to do it, your friends, your enemies - even your pets if they can work a keyboard! After you do that - call your local radio station and ask them to play Last Dance as a dedication to the lady herself. We as Donna Summer fans have a reputation for being noisy and enthusiastic. Let's show the world how noisy and enthusiastic we really can be! The goal is to get the song to chart as high as possible on Billboard for that week. Now I have some links for you to use - I do get a commission on the AMAZON links if you decide to use them, but anything I earn will be donated to charity in Donna's name. I also have a graphic you can use. My thoughts behind this are a royal purple ribbon to represent our Queen and a heart to represent our love. Please post this info to your twitter feeds, facebook walls, myspace blogs, tumblr, youtube or any other social media you use. If you participate in music forums, please try to get those people involved too. (Just don't get yourself in trouble for spamming - know where the line is and don't cross it.) I am going to email Universal tomorrow to tell them to watch the sales Wednesday. And we'll see who else I can email. If anyone else has any contacts that can be of any help - drop them a line too. Let's not just make this big - let's make it HUGE. And let's make it worldwide. And let's show those Billboard Awards people how a tribute SHOULD be done. :-)

NTG wrote: Do you know if they have remastered her old albums or can we find only some remastered songs on compilations?
Not really. All of her albums were finally made available on CD in the early 90's. but only the newer compilations are technically 'remastered'. But her studio albums sound great. Some are very easy to find and a few go for outrageous prices. The best and most complete packages to get are 'GOLD' & 'The Ultimate Collection' from The Netherlands.
Or if there is anything special you need, contact me

Great to see ABBA with Donna Summer & The Bee Gees on the same stage! ...

What a fantastic line up for the gift of music concert ... The cream of the '70s ... ABBA, Donna Summer, Bee Gees, Olivia Newton John, Earth Wind & Fire, Rod Stewart etc an the ... Love that Donna Summer and Robin Gibb are singing along to ""He Is Your Brother"
Link
Think ABBA and Donna understood the concept better with "Chiquitita" and "Mimi's Song" than some of the others (why did Rod Stewart think it a good idea to sing "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy"?????)

Donna Summer belongs in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and will probably be inducted now. It is a shame she did not live to see it.

She absolutely does belong there! Some people might say she is too 'disco' but that is just nonsense! ABBA were 'mere' pop but no one could argue they totally deserve to be there.

I loved "This Time I Know It's For Real" when I was a kid, and then I got into all her big hits.
I haven't checked the thread to see if this is mentioned, but Donna sang with Jenny Berggren (the brunette from my favorite band, Ace of Base) at Night of the Proms some years ago. On Donna's last album, Jenny sings backing vocals for a song that Jenny's husband wrote. If I recall, they recorded it in Tennessee. That's not too far from me. If I had known, I would've hunted them down!
