Melanie C from a girl to woman
SINGAPORE: Like it or not, Ginger, Baby, Posh, Scary and Sporty made an indelible dent in the world of pop culture and fashion in the mid '90s. More than just teaching us how to slam our bodies down and wind it all around, the Spice Girls managed to convince an entire generation of teenage girls to stand tall and hold their heads up high in platfoirms.
"I hated those shoes," laughed Melanie C. "I thought they were the most ridiculous things ever. Unfortunately, for one TV ad in the UK we were all in different colour platforms sprayed to the colour of our outfits. I was not happy."
What a difference a decade makes. Melanie may not be selling albums by the truckloads or flying around in a private jet anymore, but she's discovered something else, happiness. "I enjoy every day, I love my work, I'm so happy with the music I'm making, I just truly am enjoying myself more than ever." Its something the 30 year old attributes to growing older. "I started caring less about stuff like what people think of you. I think I became more laid back and realised that we're not here for that long so just enjoy it while we care."
Melanie may get it now, but Sporty wasn't as lucky. "We have a cruel media. When I was very young, anything that was written, I took it quite personally and you have to learn not to do that." reveals the Northern Star singer. "I was anorexic when I was in the Spice Girls, I remember when I started putting on weight, I was about a size six or size eight and I went up to a 10 which is still tiny. In the UK, the most common size is a size 14! I was a size 10 and the the media was calling me overweight."
Just as Melanie has grown from insecure pop starlet to confident singer-songwriter, her sense of style too evolved. "I think as I've gotten older I've gotten a little bit more feminie. I love Stella McCartney, Chloe and Marc Jacobs, but I'm defintely more of a casual girl. I still like my trainers and I like my jeans, but now I'll wear them with a nice top."
Some things, of course, never change. "I'm famous for wearing the Adidas tracksuits, which I still have!" she giggles. "But I can't wear them in public that much 'cos I think people would think I was trying to be ironic or something."
