MOST would remember Melanie Chisholm, or Mel C, as the super-dynamic Sporty Spice of the now-disbanded all-girl British pop sensation, Spice Girls.
Since then, and having released her first solo album Northern Star in 1999, she has gradually toned down her image. After years of battling a weight problem, she now looks absolutely stunning and a picture of health. She held a Press conference in Kuala Lumpur recently to promote her third solo album, Beautiful Intentions. KARINA FOO talks to Melanie (below) about her new album and a little bit of herself.
Q: Why did you name your album Beautiful Intentions?
A: Beautiful Intentions is also the title of the first track. It’s to efface the negativity we face in life but people often don’t see that and are hated or rejected when all we want is peace and harmony in the world.
Q: You are said to be the most successful British female artiste in the last decade. What is different about Beautiful Intentions?
A: I feel this album is entirely me compared to the first two because I got to co-write 11 of the 12 tracks, and it contains a lot of deep emotions based on what I’ve experienced.
Q: What about the type of music you use in this album?
A: I used a lot more anthemic kind of rock and got the idea from Reason as it was filled with a lot of crowd-addictive high-energy pop rock. Beautiful Intentions also has a little bit of soul, ballads and R&B to give it a more sentimental tone.
Q: Which songs do you think will go down well?
A: Well, I hope the fans will like all of them (laughs) because each song talks about things that we have never dared to discuss in public. So, this album is in a way a source of liberation for everyone.
Q: Which song stands out the most for you?
A: I think all the songs show every aspect of me and I hope my fans can also relate to that, especially Next Best Superstar which shows the darker side of celebrity culture and instant fame.
Q: You look better than ever now and seem so energetic. How did you achieve that?
A: Why thank you, but it’s because I’ve been through so much and life has really inspired me beyond description. I find that being happy makes you look good and I am right now, really happy.
Q: Do you want to be known as Mel C, Melanie C or Melanie Chisholm?
A: My full name, Melanie Chisholm.
