ABBA's Influence on Other Musicians ?
I was shuffling all ABBA songs while tring to catch a deadline. Suddenly I realized that one of the songs is so similar to Beatle's songs. I know that the boys are Beatle's fans, so it is just logical if the band has influenced them.

I am wondering whether ABBA has similar influence on other musicians that they make songs which are simply similar to, or at least have similar characteristics to those of ABBA songs ...

Once upon a time in Jakarta, song writers wrote songs that copied "I DO 5x" simply because the song was so popular here that they wanted to get a hitchhike to popularity.

Thanks ...

Which Beatle's song do you mean? I am reminded of "Eleanor Rigby" in "SOS." It's in the intro, a certain piano note being played... I don't know piano notes, but I was told it was a minor note, and ER is also in minor notes... Well, I'm imagining it in my head... if I had the song playing right now, I might describe it differently... And a Eurythmics song (Here Comes the Rain Again??) reminds me a bit of ABBA, with the strings...

I had read that ABBA's 2-couples make up and their men-women-men-women sung lyrics (as in He is Your Brother) was imitated a lot in the mid-'70's. One example given was Starland Vocal Band's "Afternoon Delight."

I think of some groups and interprets like these:

Baccara
Olsen Brothers
E-Rotic
LUV
Arabesque
Brotherhood Of Men
Dschinghis Khan
Milk & Honey
Maywood
Earth & Fire
Pussycat
Harpo
Blondie
Boney M.
The Bangles
Atomic Kitten

and many others. I think ABBA influenced a lot of those girl groups in the late seventies. They sounded nice, but of course they never reached the qualitiy of ABBA.

I think ABBA definitely influenced Ace of Base.

About everybody who came after ABBA?

Re: ABBA's Influence on Other Musicians ?

drimnagh - 03.10.2007, 17:16

Everybody's influenced by everybody else. Fact. Unless you live on a desert island it would be impossible not be affected by the other sounds we hear in this quagmire we call 'life'.

:rotfl2:

It's what you do with that influence that counts so unless something has been outright plaigarised I don't see a problem. It's a compliment!

I can hear ABBA's influence everywhere! Dana International's 'Diva' eurovision thingie was SO ABBA-esque it was untrue! But it worked and the song was/is as catchy as a cold.

Besides the women in the Brotherhood looked like plain English housewifes with no glamour at all.
But this has nothing to do with music so...

Re: ABBA's Influence on Other Musicians ?

drimnagh - 03.10.2007, 17:45

LOL Bonnie! The Brotherhood Of Man were a 'dowdy' ABBA...

Thanks for the replies, guys ... It's good to know that ABBA also influences other musicians.

BTW, when I said this:

the song I was referring to was "She's My Kind of Girl"

I can see this Beatles influence in The name of the game
It's similar to Penny Lane , the trumpet part.
Another example : I'm just a girl has the same rhythm
of Girl

about your question:
Noel Gallagher said he likes Abba , I wonder if this influence Oasis.

I think ABBA have influenced a lot of different acts, many noted here. And if you look and watch some ABBA Documentary's Many artists are fans of ABBA.

In the Seventies though Brotherhood Of Man were I think trying to be a poor imitation Of ABBA then What About Bucks Fizz!

Does anyone remember a group called The Dooleys? I think they were a family act. Anyway, they had a song out called 'Wanted' which was a blatant ABBA rip off!

It wasn't bad, actually... re-mixed and re-released it could be a hit again.

The 2 Male/2 Female Dutch Group, Champagne, were the best ABBA 'copy' Group in my view. They had Hits in Holland & Belgium in the 1970's.

I bought their 'Best Of', recently, on CD.

'Valentino' is so like ABBA that it is untrue - and very catchy. It sounds EXACTLY like ABBA at their catchiest.

'Rock & Roll Star' has 'Fernando-like Flutes in it, & a build-up Chorus that reminds me of the Chorus in 'SOS'. It has a fade that is like the 'Aaahhhh' intro to 'One Of Us' - one of the Females fades out, in the same way that 'One Of Us' starts. Except that 'One Of Us' is a 1981 Song, & the Champagne Single is from about 1976 or 1977.

'Oh Me Oh My Goodbye' is structured like 'Dancing Queen' - it starts with the Chorus, & has the 2 Females singing in the same key as Agnetha & Frida in 'Dancing Queen', in the Verses. It even has the 'tinkling piano' sounds from 'Dancing Queen'.

'Light Up My Eyes' is another very ABBA-like song, from the Group. It is very, very catchy.

As is, 'Rollerball', which reminds me a bit of 'Summernight City', & Black Jack', which has a sort of 'Money Money Money' tempo/sound to the Music.

I have many ABBA-like Singles by, Brotherhood Of Man, Bucks Fizz, The Dooleys, & Dollar, but Champagne did it best in my opinion - as regards sounding like ABBA.

There was also such group Steps. And also Swedish artist Charlotte Nielsen (I don't know if I spell it corectly). She won Eurovision somewhere in the 1990s with a song Take me to your heaven. And it was said that this song was similar to Waterloo.

I would mention also some songs by One More Time. I once played One More Time and Maywood to my friend and he said that almost all I listen to resembles Abba

Mike Oldfield recorded Arrival in the early eighties. I don't like his version very much, but he certainly changed the style of his music in the following reordings and oriented it towards shorter, catchier tunes. Some of his songs remind me of Abba.

Another group that may have had ABBA as an inspiration was Guys 'n' Dolls. They were quite popular here in the Netherlands in the second half of the seventies and had big hits with 'You're my world', 'You don't have to say you love me', 'There's a whole lotta loving'.

They started with 6 group-members. Two of them formed a new duo called Dollar and the other 4 members carried on.
When Guys 'n' Dolls split up, again two of its members, Dominic Grant & Julie Forsyth (who are also married), formed a duo and had succes with country music. I believe they still live in the Netherlands today.

Here's an albumcover from one of their seventies albums:

Apparently they were succesful in other countries as well. Their debut single 'Rock'n roll star' even reached the US Billboard charts and they had 9 number ones in Israel.
I agree 'Rock'n roll star' has very much the same pattern as 'SOS', the verses as well as the chorus. Even the 'when you're gone' part from 'SOS' is copied in the chorus with another line that is sung twice.
They also made use of multi-harmony choruses, sometimes with male backing vocals.
It seems that even the 'Dancing queen' single-cover was an inspiration for the cover of their debut album (with gangster hats and all):

Most of the songs from that debut album are still quite enjoyable. Not only the catchy singles, but also songs like 'She's as lovely as a breeze', 'Music is my living' & 'The air that I breathe'.

They reunited recently (all 4 original members) and are planning to do a tour in theatres in the Netherlands. I don't think they are planning to do new recordings though.

Another dutch combo, although I always thought they were british until YouTube told me otherwise just recently, was "Tight Fit". Now their single in 1982 "Fantasy Island" was so blatantly ABBA, especially on the choruses, it had me fooled when I first heard it on the Radio.

They were in fact british, not dutch. They had a big international hit with a cover version of 'The lion sleeps tonight'. The follow-up single was indeed 'Fantasy island' which was also a cover version. Dutch band The Millionaires entered the dutch heat for the Eurovision Song Contest with that song in 1982 but didn't qualify. Tight Fit covered the song and took it to number 5 in the UK.

Re: ABBA's Influence on Other Musicians ?

Visitor1982 - 10.10.2007, 20:47

The song And I Wish from the Dooley's sounds very much like ABBA.

I never understood that people thought Fantasy Island by Tight Fit sounded like ABBA. It's nothing like ABBA sounded in 1982 and most of the song is sung by a male voice, not the ABBA sound at all. It's catchy though. There was a rumour that said ABBA and Polar wanted to sue Tight Fit for this song, which is complete nonsense. You can't sue anyone for sounding like you, only if you steal parts from existing songs (melodywise or lyricwise), which Tight Fit never did.

Very Interesting Marnix, I know here in NZ a group I can't remember had a number 1 Hit with a song That used SOS.

And I know that Benny & Bjorn did sue.

I'm pretty sure They won damages.

Someone may be able to jog my memory and tell me the group & Song.

Re: ABBA's Influence on Other Musicians ?

onlyabba4me - 11.10.2007, 15:16

Maxi-saxi,
The Song that Benny & Bjorn sued over was, 'Bring Me Edelweiss',
by Edelweiss - an Austrian Group.

The Chorus used the same melody as the Chorus in 'SOS'.

It was a huge Global Hit in 1988 - 1989. It is said to have sold
5 Million copies Globally. If that is true, it is 1 Million more than
'SOS' sold.

In the UK it did this in the Top 10:,

7- 6 - 5 - 8

In Germany:,

6 - 4 - 3 - 3 - 2 - 3 - 3 - 4 - 6

And in Austria, it spent 8 Weeks at No.1.

Visitor1982, I disagree about, 'Fantasy Island', not sounding
like ABBA. I think that it sounds very much like ABBA.
The UK Trio - Tight Fit - 1 Male & 2 Females, were really
Models - chosen to sing the Cover of the 1960's Tokens
Hit, 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight', & then 'Fantasy Island'.

In 'Fantasy Island', it's true that a Male Sings ONE of the
Verses, but one of the Females Sings another Verse,
& the 2 Females & the Male Sing the Chorus's. They sound
so much like ABBA, (Chorus), that when I copied the Track,
for an American, (in 1984), she thought that she was listening
to an ABBA Track, when it came to the Chorus!

We could just as easily say that, 'Does Your Mother Know',
sounded nothing like ABBA, in 1979. It was nothing like any
of their other 1979 Singles, & it sounded less like ABBA than
'Fantasy Island' did.....

Re: ABBA's Influence on Other Musicians ?

Maxi-saxi - 12.10.2007, 04:25

Thank you for that. I can remember Benny or Bjorn saying in an interview that there legal team were currently sorting things out, From what I can remember they won and the amount was of course kept quiet.
