Roosendaal 2008 - April 19th
Just a reminder (I guess it's like saying Christmas is nearly here) but in any case I've booked my room at the usual Hotel (rooms sold out last year).

For those who haven't been before (you can see pictures at various websites) it's a really fun weekend. Some arrive Friday evening and meet at the Big Ben pub. The formal day Saturday starts with many stalls selling Abba stuff to the non-stop background of rare videos playing on a big screen. This part is from about 12 to 5pm then an Abba disco 7pm to 11pm and back to Big Ben for even more drinks and jollification. Sometime people meet up on Sunday, but usually trains are caught back to Amsterdam for onwards flights while others, like me, drive home.

People come from everywhere and it's a great chance to meet people and hear their news.

There are various ways to get to Roosendaal - quite a few fly in and take the train down from Amsterdam, other drive across since it's between Brussels and Amsterdam and easy to drive to.

This is the Big Ben pub from a few years ago - the drinking keeps going until about 2am - with of course some Abba music.

And some of the things you might find - lots of CDs, posters, pictures and the occasional gem.

I know it's a little early, but I couldn't wait to book the hotel, so I did it a few minutes ago!
DancingQueen - 24.09.2007, 17:35

I'm pretty much privileged I guess - I live so near Roosendaal that it isn't hardly a matter of travelling for me.

So I might be going this year. (depends on costs and activitities ect.)

Entrencecosts are low, so it depends on what you are wanting to spend that day...

Anyway I guess I will be there again, I can hardly afford not to go
DancingQueen - 06.11.2007, 17:31

Angeleyes wrote: How about a train?

It isn't hard to get there at all by car or train, so that wouldn't make any problem at all. It's more a money matter, as I said before. Besides, I am still under the age of 18 years.
Angeleyes - 06.11.2007, 17:41

DancingQueen wrote: It's more a money matter, as I said before. Besides, I am still under the age of 18 years.

I understand, but you don't have to take a lot of money with you...You can take a look at all those fabulous Abba-things without buying them.
And it don't costs you a lot of money to come inside and have fun!!! You don't need money to dance all night at the disco. And you can drink water or take some drinks with you from home. Please come, and save some money from your upcomming birthday...

It's a save place to walk around being a girl from only 16 years old... :D
And if somebody wants to 'hurt' you, just call me!! and I will protect :fight: you.
DancingQueen - 06.11.2007, 18:48

Angeleyes wrote: You can take a look at all those fabulous Abba-things without buying them.

I can tell you in advance that is not going to work. I probably will not be able to get my hands off the fantastic Abba merchandise which is offered there. But you are right - I can save some money on other stuff like drinks, so that would be a good solution.

Angeleyes wrote: And if somebody wants to 'hurt' you, just call me!! and I will protect :fight: you.

 That is kind.

But got it exactly right there - I'm only sixteen years old, so I bet none of you would take a girl from that age serious.

Meeting up in Big Ben Friday
My current plans are to drive from the UK on Friday and go to the hotel (Goderie) late afternoon (probably after shopping), go out have something to eat and arrive at the pub later.

Just an idea we could all meet up in reception at the hotel at a pre-arranged time, go for a meal somewhere (or even eat in the hotel as some of us did last year) and then onto the pub afterwards. Late comers could head also straight to the pub.

Friday or Saturday or whenever
For those who haven't been before, the weekend seems to consists of many informal parts over and above the formal day. Thus you can dip in and out of whichever parts fit into your plans.

Friday (evening) 7pm ish - some people sometimes meet in hotel (Goderie) for meal before going out.

Friday (evening) Big Ben and drink until wee hours (i.e. about 2am) - the pizza/kebab shop is still open as one wanders back to hotel.

Saturday (about noon to about 5pm) Formal event (exact times depend on year) with videos, events, and various stalls with lots of Abba stuff.

Saturday (5pm until about 8pm?) free time to get ready for ...

Saturday (... to 11pm/12mdt?) the disco.

Saturday evening until wee hours (again) - Big Ben (lots of people walk back and get there about 1/2 hour after end of disco)

And this ignores the apres ski!!

There are various maps around, Goderie is near station, Big Ben in central Roosendaal and Rottier slightly out of town - although many walk it.

Thus even if you can't make the whole weekend, there are parts that should fit in with plans.

Hope this helps

Good to see so many people going.

As someone said (I think it was Dirk?), you can walk from Rottier to town centre in about 25 minutes and you will find that many people give the taxi queue a miss after the disco and walk on to the Big Ben. That's what we did last year, a whole group of us singing 'under Attack' and it was great (yes I know some of us had had a few beers !)...

c u there

Map to Big Ben
Here's a map showing how to get from station to BigBen.

Essentially go along ring road, turn right, get to cross roads where shops are, turn right and head for the main square.
You may be looking at something like http://www.geocities.com/charlieap/images/abro05a.jpg and pub is opposite on the left as you enter the square.

depends how fast you can walk..
average walker about 20 mins.
i am in hotel Central and to the Rottier it was half an hour..Big Ben is practically half way.
that was Elaine's pace
it's a much better walk doing with other people!

It doesn't have much but I stumbled across http://members.home.nl/eetcafedebigben/big%20ben_002.htm (alternatively http://www.eetcafebigben.nl/).

Fire&Ice - 10.04.2008, 00:23

What does it mean Gary? Terminal 5 :?:
Charlie - 10.04.2008, 00:45
Terminal 5
London has a number of airports and Heathrow is one of the largest. Up until recently it had four terminals (1-4!) and has just opened Terminal 5.
British Airways runs out of it and had great teething problems handling the huge numbers of passengers and especially the luggage. Flights were cancelled, people had to sleep in the terminal and worse still there are over 20,000 pieces of luggage not delivered.
This has been big headlines here with stories like the bags being sent to Milan for sorting etc. However the worst thing has been the cancellations and bad image on BA.

Thus if you're flying into the UK, try to avoid T5 until the mess has been sorted out (or don't take hold luggage!)

Hope everybody has a good trip there and see you all in Big Ben on Friday evening.

My Friday night story:

Me and Marieke went to Roosendaal, checked in in our hotel and after 9 pm we finally arrived at Big Ben! It was the first time we visited this bar and we were very curious about it. When we came in we heard ABBA-music and that didn't stop! :D So the party could begin. First we met some good old Swiss friends and later we found Gary, Elaine, Charlie and Anita there too! We also made some new friends with whom we talked and danced, real fun! We stayed there until 2 pm.

Gary and Elaine + dancing and meeting friends

It was nice to meet Gary and Elaine again, was the last time really 1 year ago? Charlie looks a bit different then last year, but looking good, and it was a pleasure to meet him again. Me and Marieke think he's a real gentleman. :D Why didn't I take a picture of him... :?

Thank you very much for the link Samy!! I saw some friends on the vid and even a small part of benfridgirl and loveangel dancing!! When you hear the song P&B, I was at the disco too (arrived there around 8.30 pm  ), but luckily enough I wasn't filmed...
Angeleyes - 22.04.2008, 13:49

My ABBA day:

After a night with only a few hours sleep, me and Marieke were having breakfast in our hotel. We were surround by other fans from Holland and Germany. I felt miserable...maybe too nervous for what was coming/happening this day?

Around 10.30 we arrived at Rottier, there was enough place to park my car at that moment. Our belgium friends were there already and we swapped some stuff. Not long after that Loveangel was there!! :excited: It was very good to see her again, and while talking with eachother the door opens at 11.00 am. Just like every year we've got a nice fanclub-present.

For free :wink::

Pictures from old fanclub-magazines and the present on the right!

We went for searching for rare Abba-stuff!! You could buy a lot of rare fanmade dvd's with different Abba-performances. But (unfortunately!) I didn't dare to buy one of these...A few years ago I bought a fanmade Agnetha-dvd for 15 euro's and the quality was really bad... But I think next year I will buy one, because I know now the quality was good for only 8 euro's...:D

As usual you can buy a lot of things every year and if you don't buy a thing, there is enough to look at...F.e. posters, cards, scrapbooks, articles, vinyl, (bootleg) cd's/dvd's, dolls, mugs....and so on...

This is what I bought or got as a present:

 I didn't bought any vinyl...? :stupid:
Though I got one KMKY-single as a present from one lovely friend.

Not to forget these Agnetha-posters:

The left one I had for years hanging in my room, but I think I lost that one... :? Now I have that one again!! The right one was new to me! But when I showed that one at home in my garden (later on) suddenly it was blown by the wind in my pool... Luckily I could save it from further damage...and you hardly can see that it was very wet...:D

During the day you can sit and watch different ABBA vids on a big screen (you can see it on the link Samy posted). So there's a lot of ABBA around you!

After some time I got a message from Ivana on my mobile wich said: "Arrival"! And then we met eachother for the very first time, she was brought there by good old Bonnie! How nice to meet people on the forum from different countries with whom you only are talking on this site!! :D

We took pictures outside from Bonnie, Ivana, me, Marieke and Loveangel (already posted here). Me and Marieke were wearing a self-made t-shirt with blue or yellow cat on the front and ABBA logo on our back. On my back I also ironed my name "Angeleyes". And at some time, a smart young lady was getting my attention and explaning that she was benfridgirl! So we met Evelyn too! :D Evelyn told me later that day that lovesagnethaforever was also @ Roo, I don't know why, but we didn't met eachother... And Nina: you was there too!! Didn't see you either...

Name and ABBA logo were on back of my shirt.

Every year you can enter a competition and win some very nice items (see link: Samy). And every year there's a special guest, this time the formers of the Abba museum, who gave a presentation. Read my report here: http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-30652567nx61610-5071.html#137163

Marieke is having fun with fanclub-crew.

Ivana reading a card and Loveangel filming the day. :D

I had a wonderful day, but I wasn't really happy what I had bought... Because I didn't found any vinyl single I wanted for my collection. Ofcourse I saw some, but the prices were a bit too high this year. And there were less sellers then other years, so I was a little disappointed.
On the other hand, I've met a few new friends, and that was what made me VERY HAPPY!! :D

I have to go in Roo next year....definitely..!
Angeleyes - 24.04.2008, 20:53

I didn't told you anything yet about that fantastic ABBA-disco...If you are interested, I'll do it now.

After searching for ABBA-stuff and meeting new friends, me and Marieke had a 'diner' with one of our Belgium friends. We stayed till 17.55, because on that time on the big screen an ABBA performance of "Thank You For The Music -ending- (never aired on tv) from 1982", was shown. It was a very nice and live performance and indeed we didn't saw that one before. I'm sorry but I can't tell you from what tv-show that performance was...
After that last 'present' we brought our friend to the station and went to our hotel.

We had to dress up for the DISCO! :boogie:
OMG...it took a lot of time...I know, I know...you always have to wait for women...I got irritated, because I wanted all things to be perfect... :stupid:
Because we decided we wanted some alcoholic drinks that night, we called a cab to bring us back to Rottier...more time went by...When we arrived at Rottier, Charlie was standing there to take pictures of us with his friend under a clear blue sky...Then finally (!) we arrived at the disco on 20.30...(the disco started already on 19.00)! Another Swiss friend screamed in my ear "You're LATE!!" Yeah, yeah, I knew...

But from the moment on we finally were there: WE DANCED, AND DANCED!! Wow, every year it's really a fantastic experience to dance on those beautifull ABBA (or Abba related) songs! I just can't get enough of it. And what makes my day: they even played "Hung Up" from Madonna!! So funny to hear Madonna on an ABBA-day, they did play this song last year too! Most of the time we danced with Loveangel and Benfridgirl. And it became clear to me that Benfridgirl knows all the lyrics of Abba's songs... I loved to dance with her!
Ivana introduced me to Nathan and Dirk that evening. We didn't talk (why not? :? ) with eachother, but said 'hello'.

 The blokes where Johnny refered to, weren't there this year. Glad they weren't...but maybe Gary missed them...

It's really funny to see that people are staring at you or at others...and to watch other people yourself!!! The atmosphere is really good between all fans, we have the same thing in common. And at the end of this great party, it's always the same song to be played then: The Way Old Friends Do! People are holding eachothers hands and make a circle, then the circle closes and opens...A lot of people are always crying when this song stops and the lights go on...I think I'm not so sentimental...

Then Anita and Helga always thanks everybody who helped and were there.

Time to say goodbye to everyone! A lot of people are hugging eachother before they leave, imagine: you'll never know where or when you will see the other again?!

It was a wonderful evening and we've had a lot of fun!!

After this party, me and Marieke walked with Gary and Elaine to the Big Ben again and had there our last party of this weekend. With again a lot of ABBA music! (Ivana: did they finally play money, money, money for you?)
5 minutes before our hotel closes we were in and went to bed...Wow, what a night!! :D

Don't have taken pictures of this evening myself, but I think Gary will soon put up some.
Fire&Ice - 24.04.2008, 22:11

It is a great description Karin! :D

We all had a great time, danced a lot, and STILL I haven't heard Money Money Money at all! LOL Not in Big Ben as well. It seems they did not have it.. Oh well, I have several versions of MMM at home anyway! LOL

I did talk to Dirk and Nathan outside hehe, but inside it was just too loud, so we mostly danced, and I was circulating quite a lot. :blob1

Hi guys, delighted to see you again Dirk and nice meeting you Nathan! :D

And Ivana is sporting Frida hair... looking good! :frida:

By the way: I still have that left Agnetha poster from good old PopFoto!

Fire&Ice - 25.04.2008, 10:05

I'm actually only sporting the colour, (have always loved red even when I was out of ABBA and Frida) but the hairstyle is more 77 Agnetha actually. :D

Thanks Ron!

Roo Report
Here's a quick report on my wonderful time at Roo.

Sunday - Thursday - decided to take the whole week off and caught mid-afternoon ferry. Travelled round Belgium including Dinant, several cross country roads, Maasmechelen (B)/Maastricht (NL)/Aachen (D) triangle.
Thursday - arrived a day earlier than planned, checked into Goderie, tried the American place for an average meal and went to a very quiet Big Ben. Had one too many beers including an 8% bottle.
Friday - late start so went shopping in Rotterdam - although didn't find much.
Friday evening - went into central Roosendaal, bumped into Ron, Fiona, Pascale etc and went to Tapas bar (see earlier photo). Then onto Big Ben.
Saturday - bought a few things at Rottier - it didn't seem so good as previous years so only a few CDs, a poster and a few articles - but did see some nice videos including one about when in Stockholm to see Abba locations and met quite a few familiar friends. After a break met a few people for a meal in the Central - very fussy waiter about whether his empty restaurant had any spaces for us - and got to disco about 7.15. Left 10ish to dump car and walk to Big Ben. Had nice midnight snack (at the pizza place) to accompany the few beers.
Sunday - said goodbye to Adi and a few others, went to station for brunch with Ron and then headed home for 4pm ferry. Got home, knackered, by 9pm.

spong - 27.04.2008, 10:52

hello

i have a question for you Charlie:how much was your ferry trip
and where did you go from?
i have now been to two both by plane and i thought it might be fun to try another way.

gary :D
Charlie - 27.04.2008, 12:58
Ferry to Roo
This year I actually used Norfolk Line but other ferries are similar. The cost depends on the exact time. Another method is to use Eurotunnel. Thus the cost is between 60 and 100 pounds depending on whether you're happy to take Friday off work. Another option for people up north is the Hull/Rotterdam overnight ferry - costs more but leaves less driving the other side.
There's also a good website www.mappy.com to work out routes.

Cheers Charlie

Travel time from the UK
Just some more useless info for those thinking of driving over as opposed to flying.

It takes about an hour from the M26/M20 junction to get to Dover, 1 hour wait (say) for the boat, 2 hour ferry, 3 hour drive to Roo. (There's a useful site www.mappy.com that can confirm the timings).

Also if you smoke (I don't but friends do) you can fill up with tobacco in Adinkerke on the Belgium border (e.g. www.stopshop.be) and save a bundle.

On Sunday I left Roo about 12.30 lunchtime and got home, Southampton, mid-evening. You can also have a meal on the ferry or if you're in a hurry take the Chunnel to save some time both in the crossing and not having to wait so long (you can sometimes get on the earlier train if they're not busy). There's a toll if you use the tunnel (near Antwerp I think) of EUR 4.50.

The additional paperwork needed - take the V5 (log book) and your insurance - take the headlight thingies - take a GB sticker - take spare set of bulbs and triangle - ensure your insurance is happy (mine is but it's worth checking beforehand).

The other thing is that once you're on the E40 it can be all motorway (some hassle at Antwerp ring similar to going round the M25 - but follow the signs) until you get to the turning from Roo. Once there I took the turning from the A17 (rather than the A58 one) that Mappy suggests, and it's easier to get to the station/hotel that way.

Cheers Charlie
