A NORTH-east oil worker has filmed one of the world's fastest and deadliest sharks - less than 200 miles off Aberdeen.

Rig safety worker Lance Baldwin, from Keith, videoed the killer Mako with a remote-control underwater camera.

And today an Aberdeen shark expert said the pictures were the long-awaited proof the creatures were off the coast of Scotland.

Lance, who was working on safety checks on the BP ULA platform, first thought the shark - swimming 100ft down - was a man-eating Great White.

The Mako is a close relative of the notorious killer but is a lot faster - reaching speeds of 60mph.

It has been known to leap out of the water onto boats and attack humans. One man was reported to have been decapitated.

Lance, who was working with colleague Scott Munro, said: "The shark must have been about eight to 10ft long, with a white underbelly.

"The scary thing is there was a team of divers working around the rig on maintenance the other day. I wouldn't want to be one of them now.

"The first we knew was when we saw something flash across our monitors just before 11am on Saturday.

"Scott and I just looked at each other and mouthed: "Oh, my God - it's Jaws."

Aberdeen University shark researcher Lauren Smith said: "There have been sightings of Makos by fishermen to the north and west of Scotland.

"But this is very exciting because it is the first evidence we have that they are actually off our coast."

Mako attacks have happened in Australia, New Zealand and America. In 2004 a 50-year-old man diving off the Californian coast was decapitated by one.

Australian marine biologist Dave Baxter said: "It's a very mean killing machine."
