Mamma Mia - The movie dvd
1. Would you purchase the dvd unconditionally when it's released?
2. If all 4 make a cameo appearance in the movie, would you purchase it even if the movie sinks?
3. If only B and B make a cameo appearance, would you purchase it?
4. If there is a new song but the movie is a stinker, would you still get it?
I would definately get a copy come what may. However, if the movie sinks, prob I'll just wait to buy it at the bargain bin.

I never was interested in the musical, so I probably won't buy the DVD. If there's a cameo, it will be on youtube as a snippet within days. No need to purchase the whole movie then.

I definately won't buy it. For the rest I agree with Johnny.

1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. No.
4. No.
I enjoy Mama Mia! very much, though ABBA is something totally different. They only used the songs to build a whole heyday for some of those and made people not forgetting how good ABBA in fact were. It was a wonderful experience seeing the musical being done with a lot of enthousiasm and therefore I hope the movie will be as much fun. ABBA is just something totally diffent, and for that reason, I think some of the questions are a bit naive. No matter if the four turn up or not - I would love to see Mama Mia! The Movie. You simply can not compare both things.

DQ, never in my life do I ever consider thinking of something in advance and considering all the possibilities as naive. But that's just me, mind always running way ahead of everything. :D I suspect it is the water here.
I chose not to watch Mamma Mia when it was performed here. At that tme, I couldn't bear to hear the songs sung by anyone other than our foursome. Didn't think that I missed anything until I read some of the comments here - those who had seen it and loved, loved, loved it. So now, I just want to keep an open mind and enjoy ABBA in whatever possible way.
I'm also thinking it wld be a good way to introduce young people to ABBA - just innocently pop in the dvd and before you know it, they'll be hooked by the melodies and rhythm.

Please note I don't think you are a naive person: some of the thoughts you mentioned sound unrealistic to me.
I agree on you it's no good thinking in advance, but I don't want to relate things to another which you can not compare. The four are not responsible for Mama Mia! and I don't expect them do to anything more than enjoy the wonderful show and movie hopefully.

It happened to me too you know. I don't consider the latest charts as good music: it's only a matter of music from twenty/thirty years ago to me. Therefore I think it is just great the new generation like myself can experience some wonderful timeless music without having it spoiled by some new popgroup preforming and old act. Music now is often much influented by older stuff, and I think a a lot of people don't realize many of those wore considered as 'oldies' now made once big hits. To me, Mama Mia! wasn't as much as an ABBA experience, but just a wonderful discovery of some great music used in an other way. It was really worth seeing, and it's just a matter of trying not to compare both things, as I said once before.

I want to see Mamma Mia the Movie. Perhaps I watch it in the cinema, perhaps on TV. I usually don´t buy many movies on DVD, but if it´s not expensive, it is possible that I will get it.

I'll see the movie first, then decide on buying the dvd. i think back to The Who's movie "Tommy". i loved the album but was horrified what they did to the songs in the movie. the background music was lame, they changed the lyrics to entire songs. great cameos and wild interpretations didn't even save it for me. I guess I'm a little nervous to see what they do to Mamma-Mia. I loved it in person.

I'll go to see it on cinema first. But I will buy it when it comes out on DVD too, even if I don't like it so much. Just to have in the collection  I'm pretty sure I'll like it though :D

I'm thinking as Elin above. I'll hopefully get to see it in the theater, and I will probably buy the DVD. Hopefully, there will be some great extras on the DVD. There are so many talented people involved in the movie, I can't imagine it won't at least be good. All this, regardless of cameo appearances.

I imagine that even if it sinks at the box office I will get it as a birthday or christmas present to myself and add it to my dvd collection

Well some how I do not think it will flop at the box office.
But Needless to say I'll probably get it given to me as a present, My dear brother is up with the play when it comes to ABBA And ABBA related releases
But I'll see it first at the Box Office.

I agree with you. However, I have one more reason to buy it and keep it - and that is Stellan Skarsgård :P

My opinion
Johnny,
You say that if there is a "snippet" in the movie of a cameo appearance of the members, you will expect it to be on Youtube within a short amount of time. You are likely correct. But here is my problem with your statement:
If Universal and others making this film make the efforts we all want in having a cameo, and go out of their way to make us fans happy, why do you not want to "thank" them by suppporting them with a purchase of the DVD? Taking a freebie snippet off of a pirated clip on the internet seems disrespectful to me.
I would buy the DVD regardless of what is on it, but I feel to snub the company making the movie in favor of getting illegal freebies is not truly supporting the efforts of the producers to please us fans, and does not seem right to me.

Gosh Dave.
You make me speechless. I can not think of any reply. I probably will have to buy it when there's a cameo.

Re: My opinion
I guess, a cameo of all 4 won't happen, but I have agreed with Johnny's first statement, so I feel asked myself as well:
abbafreak wrote: If Universal and others making this film make the efforts we all want in having a cameo, and go out of their way to make us fans happy
1. I for myself don't want a cameo in a non-ABBA production at all! In fact this would be pretty disappointing to me! To me "Mamma Mia!" actually is pirating ABBA. ;-)
2. I'm sure the main reason for any cameo would be promotion and not making us happy.
abbafreak wrote: Taking a freebie snippet off of a pirated clip on the internet seems disrespectful to me.
A cameo appearance of all 4 members would be turned into big news. A snippet wouldn't have to come from dvd. It might as well be (partly) shown around the world in TV reports for promotion reasons, so widely available. If there should really be a little interesting piece in the movie I can also wait to see it for free on TV and tape it myself in a couple of years. Anyway, chances aren't more than 50:50 that I would like to keep such a snippet. It's not ABBA.
I know you can easily attack me for my opinon, because it's not 100 % honest, but I can live with it, because I wouldn't buy the dvd or watch the movie in cinema anyway. Regarding myself nobody loses anything.

Mama Mia
Mama Mia Pirating ABBA??!! :o
If it were not for ABBA, there would be no Mama Mia......and, a LOT less current-day recognition of a band that has not recorded in 30+ years. Even though Mama Mia is not "ABBA" per se, the musical nonetheless is bringing more people into or, better yet, old fans back into the world of great ABBA songs. After all, the enitre Music/Entertainment business is centered around promotion...so of course the main objective would be to generate more ticket sales and more DVD sales...but, it will also make some ABBA fans very happy to see an appearance as well.
To each his own!

So right there Dave
It's that simple! No ABBA No Mamma Mia.
As I said earlier I hope they put heaps of extras on the DVD BUT I would Love an interview with all Members of The Group talking about the ABBA Years, especially what they enjoyed themselves the Most.
