This large item came with other parts from a B-17 crash site. This part is approximately 3 mm thick aluminum 2 m long and 70 cm high. The family said they thought all the parts were from the same American aircraft. What is it?

Hi,
the thick of a 3mm aluminium cover is very unusual, so this should have a special reason, especially with this lenght.
I think it is on of the fuel tank cover in the wings (one half of the complete cover). The fuel tank self is leakproof. I´m not sure how thick is the cover, but this is the only what I can imagine...
On the drawing I have marked the smaller fuel tank, the other tanks looks like a little bit oval form.
