Whales swimming through diesel slick off northern Vancouver Island
ALERT BAY, B.C. (CP) - About 50 killer whales have swum through a diesel slick created when a barge overturned near Vancouver Island's famed orca rubbing beaches, a whale researcher said Tuesday.
Paul's Spong's Orca Lab is about10 kilometres from where logging equipment, including a tank truck carrying diesel fuel, fell into Johnstone Strait.
"One of the principle groups that uses this area and stays for a long time in the summertime is right in the middle of Robson Bight right now, in the middle of a very obvious oil slick," Spong said.
"One of the younger whales has just exhaled a whole gob of mucous from the blowhole and I have no idea what the sort of health consequences of inhaling diesel fuel or fumes are but they're obviously not good."
The fuel was spilled when a barge flipped Monday, sending a diesel truck with a 10,000-litre capacity, as well as an ambulance and pickup trucks, into the water.
An expert from the Vancouver Aquarium said he doubted there would be long-term effects from the spill but the accident that created the spill could not have happened at a worse spot.
Lance Barrett-Lennard said strong currents will dissipate the oil quickly but, until then, the orcas could breathe fumes.
He said they suck their air from just a few inches above the surface of the water.
"The main concern, for whales and dolphins anyway, is getting it in aerosol form. That means breathing it in.
"Their lungs are quite sensitive to these sorts of fumes."
However, he said the diesel could harm water fowl.
"There's a lot of waterfowl in the area and that's an entirely different matter because they'll clean the oil off their feathers. That can have nasty consequences or cause mortality."
Barrett-Lennard said he's spoken to people on scene who say the accident happened inside a one-kilometre exclusion zone at the whale-rubbing beaches.
The smell of diesel fuel was wafting through the tiny community of Telegraph Cove, 12 kilometres south of the area where the fuel-filled equipment lies at the bottom of Johnstone Strait.
A cleanup company was at the site but salvage is difficult because early estimates suggested the equipment lies up to 400 metres below the surface.
