ABBA Single and Promo edits
Hi there all - just wanna give you a short introduction first. My name is Marc and i'm from Germany and 22 years old. I'm no0t new to ABBA and fan since the early 90's (but not through Gold).

Coming back to my topic. I know that many fans hate them - but i love to collect the various single and promo edits that were made for several songs. I by now have many of them - and still search for some oddities.
For excample i would love to hear or get info about these edits:

The Visitors (from brazil When All Is Said And Done EP) 4:33
The Day Before You Came (french edit from white label single) 4:00
I Know There's Something Going On ( US promo edit) about 3 mins.

Also the edits from the australian edition of The Magic Of ABBA would be appreciated. So if someone could give me some infos on them o even a mp3 :) i would be really happy.

Joe - 29.06.2007, 18:24

Well, whatever somebody's taste may be... :D

I can't help you, just wonder about the possible difference between the edit of "The Visitors" on "More ABBA Gold" and the Brazilian one. It's only a few seconds more or less, probably one fading out only 2 seconds earlier than the other one. And the Day Before You Came without the second verse? How can you promote anything with a ruined song!? That's sick! Perhaps it really was time to stop with ABBA.

Anyway, if nothing helps, it should be rather easy to create these edits yourself. ;-)

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

thearbiter - 29.06.2007, 19:35

Well Joe i just collect them for completeness. I know that most ruin the songs - but i think they are interesting - so it's just out of my desire to have them. I think it is exciting to have them, cuz let's face it - we will not get unreleased material in near future so thats the only way of getting some variation.
So The Day Before You Came looses the second verse?
Well The Visitors could be edited in various ways. There are many possibilities. So i also wanna know whats the difference between the brazil edit and the US edit ( the one from More Gold)

Well speaking of that - i believe that most foreign edits were done by the record companies themselves - in order to get the songs played on radio at the time - let's face it TDBYC, The Visitors and Eagle arent radio friendly in terms of length

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Hades - 29.06.2007, 19:44

I have the mexican single 'When all is said and done'/'The visitors'. The edit of 'The visitors' on that release is 3.29 minutes. I can't remember exactly how it was edited, though I do know that the intro was shortened, it didn't have a fade-in.

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

thearbiter - 29.06.2007, 20:09

Oh yea thanks Hades - i have this edit - it cuts some part of the intro - and then after the first corous where the first synth break comes it cuts to the synth break that comes after the second corous - well not the best edit :)
You by Chance also have the Brazil single?

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Joe - 29.06.2007, 21:22

No need for any kind of defense, Marc. I can understand to collect these releases, I once thought about collecting them myself, but finally said goodbye to it. I still can understand it though. :D

thearbiter wrote: So The Day Before You Came looses the second verse?
Yes, and more - according to ABBA-World

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Joe - 30.06.2007, 21:36

That's fine. :D

Maybe you're the right one to ask:
I wonder about a version of "I've Been Waiting For You" with cold ending (3.36 - source is "The Other Versions"). The ending sounds a bit weird to me, so I really wonder if it's an official version. Can't find any info at ABBA-World.

Just had another look through my versions and found an edited version of "The Visitors" (4.17 - same source as above), the fade-out seems to be very short.

Do you - or anybody else of course - know anything about these versions?

Never heard of that one. What's "The Other Versions"?

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Hades - 01.07.2007, 13:02

I wonder why they made a new edit for 'Eagle' in 1999, when the 1978 single-edit was already available. I much prefer the 1978 edit, it sounds more natural. In the new edit (which is on the Definitive Collection, among others) it is clearly audible the song has been cut after the second chorus.
I've never heard of a cold ending version of 'I've been waiting for you'. It is not mentioned in the book Complete Guide to their Music by CMP. He does mention an extended version of that song (4.49 minutes), which was released in Australia on a cassette. It was done to make the running time of both sides of the cassette roughly the same.
Other edits that are mentioned are:
'Lovelight' with an earlier fade-out, released on the 'Chiquitita' single in 1979.
'Angeleyes' (3.49), the song fades out immediately after the last chorus, released on the 'Voulez-vous' single in West-Germany.
Both of these are available on CD in the Singles Collection Box.
Then there are several cold ending versions of songs which are not commercially available, f.e. 'Take a chance on me', 'Under attack', 'Cassandra' and 'The day before you came'.

Why they did that new edit of Eagle is a mysterie to me too - it's done so badly - it first appeared on the Singles Tin Box

I also have the Mexico Single you kindly pictured there Hades
I do have a stereo but Haven't played my vinyl for years.

could be mistaken but from memory I think the song has the verses and only one chorus.

It's rather an unusual edit.

Forgot to mention also on the Atlantic Promotional Album released in 1977 There were several edits on the Album.
This was only available to Dj's etc. But I managed to get myself a copy.

That album is on my property too lol. It has 2 edits -a Take A Chance On Me edit and a The Name Of The Game edit.

wel the mexican edit of The Visitors is strange I found it online and remastered it.

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Joe - 02.07.2007, 13:33

I looked up for the versions I mentioned above:

"I've Been Waiting For You" with cold ending is said to be a demo version.
The edit Of "The Visitors" is said to be the 12'' US Promo edit.

Since the other songs on this cd are fan remixes you're probably right that these versions actually are fan edits too.

iancee - 03.07.2007, 11:33

I found a track list of this bootleg "The Other Versions". From the descriptions of the tracks, it seems to include a few genuine rarities (The Name Of The Game different vocal mix, SOS live in Eskilstuna, Just Like That lala version), and a lot of homemade remixes. I'd guess that this "I've Been Waiting For You" with a cold ending is a fan edit.

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

thearbiter - 03.07.2007, 21:09

i think so too ian :)
Well maybe i get some infos on the other edits i search from a fan that i have contact with.

That brings me back to the us promo edit of Frida's I Know There's Something Going On - it is a 3 minute or so edit - and was released exclusively on a Atlantic promo 7" as far as i know . any fan has information on that?

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Maxi-saxi - 04.07.2007, 05:04

I have heard about the Frida edit of Something's Going On as well, But I have never seen a copy.

I'm sure the promo is around some where, as I believe the song did get a lot of Radio play in the States.

It surely must have gotten! I once heard that it was being sold on ebay....
Also anyone of the UK fans can confirm, that the Heart Of The Country 7" just had the song fading out at 4 minutes?

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

cdnut - 04.07.2007, 23:43

Good topi, Marc!

I like collecting the edited versions too, just for variation. Some are quite good and others are not.

These are MY favorite edits that are legitimate ones (not fan made) --
- TAKE A CHANCE ON ME (U.S. white label "test pressing" dubbed the 'Capitol Radio Mix' from 1978
- GIMME! GIMME! GIMME! official Video version
- VOULEZ-VOUS (original video edit) which IS the edit used for 'The Videos' DVD included in the 2005 CSR box set.

and
- the original Video edit of 'When All Is Said and Done" ( a little slower speed and Frida sings the words " there's no" (hurry anymore when .....)
differently.

None of the above have ever been on an official CD release, & probably won't be. :x

Anyone who also LIKES edits or has some to share, please send me a private message. I'm always looking for more variations -- as Marc stated, we probably won't get much of anything else from the vaults of Universal Music except video/TV appearances as "new" stuff.

-Jeff

P.S. Marc, I know of (* I used to have the 3:18 edit of Frida's 'I Know There's Something Going on'.) Wish I still did, but it got damaged many years ago. It's extremely hard-to-find now, & it was on ebay awhile back,
and went for over $100 U.S. dollars. --whew! I remember it though -- someday, I'll get around to re-edting the single edit down to the 3 minutes, 18 seconds.

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Maxi-saxi - 05.07.2007, 04:32

I think many of the South American markets used to release ABBA edits, I think more so than other countries.
I brought a complete Mexican ABBA collection many years ago. which had complete singles and Albums.

You used to find on the singles that there were a few edits.
I am not sure But I think there may have been an Agnetha edit single from Mexico as well, Ill have to check my vinyl collection.

I am intersting by edit version too. It's funny to have shorter version. I think i have them all or good part. The Day Before You came (french edit) i've found it in a More ABBA Glod from United States. The others are more simple to find. Mabye juste the Chiquitita edit for german TV i never found it!

Well that video version was on the Definitive Colection too as well as on my Gold Video cassette - i know tough that there has been a video re-edit for voules-vous in 1992 - in the same vain as Dancing Queen - with other videos incooperated. and the 1992 edit was used. Makes me wonder why they never put it as extra to the Videos DVD that came with the CSR Box Set.

Anyways - i am just about to reply to your mail jeff :)
Oh and i re-master all vinyl edits and others i have from the curennt cd-remastered versions - so those edits sound top notch :)

If anyone wants to me to re-create an edit - i'll do it.

Coming back to the topic - you have a good quality version of the original WAISAD video edit?

Marc, that is great you remaster them. My WAISAD isn't great, but isn't bad either--but my video is mono, not in stereo :( I've worked on it a little with bringing the volume "up" and reducing noise. It's enjoyable to listen to.

Hey Marc,
I remember it did not have ANY guitar solo at all. It went from the
second "there's something going on" (before the guitar solo starts),
to "I k-n-o-w it won't be long, won't be long before you're gone" and
fades like the single version does.

hi Maxisaxi, did ya have a chance of listening to the LP The Magic Of ABBA?

Oh well this topic could be expandet to include edits or special versions performed on TV

Things that obviously come to mind are the 3 songs performed on german Show Express in 1982 with the cold ends. Also Chiquitita was edited on German TV Show Musikladen (but it was done by the TV channel i assume). Also some versions on ABBA In Switzerland were edits - for example Lovers was edited whereas The King Has Lost His Crown was longer.....
Another famous excample is Take a Chance On Me on German and French TV with the acapella end. Anyone on here has the french TV appearance?

Interesting that she has the time to write some 5512 posts since October last year, but no time to listen to an album!

I don't have a turntable any longer to check, but Ian Cole's excellent site at http://phenomenon.abba-world.net/ states that:

In August K-tel released The Magic Of ABBA, a compilation that had been released in the USA in 1980 . The Australian version had four additional tracks, but many songs were edited (either by fading early or editing out the second verse and chorus repeats), and the album did not feature the US gatefold sleeve.

Side 1; Dancing Queen; Take A Chance On Me; The Name Of The Game; Waterloo; Ring Ring; Does Your Mother Know; Angeleyes; SOS; Fernando; Knowing Me, Knowing You

Side 2: I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do; Mamma Mia; Honey, Honey; Money, Money, Money; Voulez-Vous; Chiquitita; The Winner Takes It All; Super Trouper; Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight); Summer Night City

I know it doesn't fully answer your questions re which particular tracks were edited etc, but hopefully provides some more information than the previous poster could offer.

Thanks iancee, As I told you the songs were ripped to shreds.

Shocking really.

I also have the USA Release and as I can remember I think there version contains 16 songs instead of the 20 the Aussie release has.

Mind you on compilations here in NZ were a few ABBA tracks appeared in the '70's & '80's You would find most ABBA songs were cut to bits.

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Yea it is kinda weird why they did so - just to fit all 20 songs on the LP i assume.

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

supertrouper - 21.07.2007, 10:55

I can understand why collectors would want to collect these different edits, but after reading the track list and descriptions for The Magic Of ABBA, oh my god, I could never listen to those. Why would you want to listen to them when you can listen to the full original versions? With todays PC software anyone can do their own edits. But for me, i'll stick to the originals.

Anthony.

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

thearbiter - 21.07.2007, 22:00

Well why do people collect things... this is a question noone can answer this properly. I for one like to have them for a change.... We always get the standard versions on every release - it makes a nice change to have a different edit..... thats my reason!

well some are bad and some are good -

Hey MaxiSaxi did ya have a chance of hearing those edits recently? from The Magic Of ABBA?

Re: ABBA Single and Promo edits

Maxi-saxi - 27.07.2007, 03:19

Sadly no not as yet. I don't think I can bring myself to sadly.

Mind you The USA release Of The Magic Of ABBA has the same track list BUT only 16 songs instead of 20.

I am not sure if any of the songs are edited, they may be but hopefully not as bad as the Aussie version.

Hi All =]

One ''edit'' i haven't seen mentioned is i have a dream cold ending from The Late, Late Breakfast Show plus Under Attack, but this was already mentioned as part of another show. I dont mind edits too much, as long as i have the original track somewhere and the song isn't runied.

Regarding the when all is said and done alternate video version, if anybody could share this with me i'd grately appreciate it. I have plenty to offer in return =]

The only edited version on the US version of the LP is Chiquitita (4.38) - first half of third verse and first half of second chorus removed. This edit is the same as on the 1979 Atlantic promotional single, and also on the LPs A Collection of Hits (USA promo), I Love ABBA (USA), Love Songs (Canada), The Best Of ABBA (USA)

Slipping Through My Fingers LP tracklist, with running times from the record label:

Side 1
1. Slipping Through My Fingers (5.48) - starts with a medley of short bursts of songs (Does Your Mother Know/On And On And On/Hasta Mañana/Dancing Queen) interspersed with a voice over, meant to sound like it's on a radio, leading into the full unedited/uninterupted version of Slipping Through My Fingers, and ending with more dialogue.
2. Dancing Queen/Waterloo/Hasta Mañana/That's Me - medley of the four songs, interspersed with dialogue from the male DJ and a female voice. Dancing Queen - song up to end of first full chorus; Waterloo - up to end of first chorus; Hasta Mañana - up to the middle of the second verse; That's Me - up to the start of the third verse.
On the first pressing of the LP, this track ran 8.49, on the second version it ran 8.07, due to a section of the dialogue being removed, apparently the male voice calls the female a silly b**** of something like that.
3. Super Trouper (1.52) - up to the end of the first full chorus, with more dialogue on the end.
4. The Winner Takes It All (4.49) - fades early.
5. Our Last Summer (4.17) - the full version, probably ends just a couple of seconds shorter than usual.

Side 2
1. Does Your Mother Know (5.18) - starts with a medley of short bursts of songs (Does Your Mother Know/On And On And On/Hasta Mañana/Dancing Queen), interspersed with dialogue from the male DJ plus the ABBA members introducing themselves ("Hello Japanese fans, we're ABBA" etc) and some other ABBA member dialogue, leading into the full version of Does Your Mother Know. No more dialogue interupting the songs after this.
2. Chiquitita (4.08) - fades out early during the second chorus.
3. If It Wasn't For The Nights (4.07) - fades out after the second chorus, during the "If it - wasn't - for the nights!" section.
4. Thank You For The Music (3.28) - full version, dispite label running time
5. On And On And On (3.40) - full version
6. Kisses Of Fire (3.17) - full version

I thought I did. All these edited versions are listed at http://www.abba-world.net/songs/edits.htm where you can find more information plus the lyrics which might better explain how the songs were edited.
