Spice Girls (including solo careers)
OMG our worst fears are coming true! Here's a news item:
LONDON - The Spice Girls announced Thursday they are reuniting for an upcoming tour. Talk of a reunion had swirled for weeks — boosted by Sporty Spice herself — and the vivacious five had been expected to make "an announcement to the world." :fight:
These girls are still in their thirties, and somehow I feel that ABBA will not follow their example.

Time to put my good old huge Spice Girls poster on Ebay!
I liked one of them though, when I was a little girl. That blonde thingie, with high boots... Hold on, she just stoled Agnetha's outfit! And she was called Emma or something, or Emmy, whatever.

Now that's at least a positive thing for us. :innocent:

Oh dear, there goes our last hope for ABBA reunion...
No former band in their right mind would want to reunite after this, for fear of being mentioned in the same sentence as Spice Girls... oh dear...

I wonder if they are any people who do want the Spice Girls to be on stage again. I mean, ABBA is often descripted as 'wrong' with the weird looking clothes from their first years, but the Spice Girls came with the same boots and even later.

Hehe, great news! Ok, again....its all about money....they have bills to pay and kids to raise (now even Baby Spice got pregnant!!) - except Posh, of course... But Im not ashamed to say (Im no snob at all when it comes about sheer pop music) that I found them very entertaining and they did rapresent a very colourful, fun period in pop back in the 90's and now Im curious to see what they will do next....those Spice Moms, lol !

Thanks for the video Andrea.
This reunion sounds like a "girl" thing, and I don't think they need the money. (Did they get a $1B offer?) They are all probably having a mid-life crisis, although they're a bit young. I don't expect any good music to come from the tour. The music's not important if they're just taking a holiday from life.
Now we can wonder what would have happened if ABBA had reunited after 10 years. :sob:

Well the sporty one was on the UK tv program "Friday night project".
And when asked what her new nickname would be she replied " Cant be assed spice".
Which is the impression she gave about the whole reunion thing. Lets hope the others feel that way and call the reunion off.
You can call me Bitter spice, it should be Abba reuniting.

hello
actually the Spice girls did a couple of not too bad songs.
but (and it's a big butt) , they are doing it for the money.
when i heard them at the re-launch just before the weekend , they where spouting "girl-power".
hearing 30 somthings do this made me wet my pants.lol.
as for a greatest hits album?
well , there are not too many groups that didn't do it.
even my beloved LZ and ABBA did.
nothing wrong with that i suppose.

its not a bad idea as they were actually the biggest british girl group of the 90's. however, while they entertained me as a kid, i don't want to see them reunite now. they did a couple of fairly good songs but on general, i don't take them seriously. i hate victoria btw, she looks so plastic its unbelievable. mel c is actually the best singer and the most successful music career-wise out of all of them, i have some of her solo stuff. mel b is now famous becuase of the eddie murphy paternity 'accident', victoria has failed in everything but riding on the back of her husband's success, geri didn't do that well and emma isn't much more than 'cute'

The question should have been - could Mel B ever reach Frida..
I don't mind them reuniting at all. I was quite fond of their music and DQ has made quite valid points here. I am not a huge fan, but I find their music light-hearted and nice, very good harmonies, proper singing, Sporty Spice being THE singer among them.
Need I say my favourite Spice was Ginger?

There's no question of Mel B ever reaching Frida's vocal standards; I simply meant that bit at the end of 'Viva Forever' where Mel B goes down, deep down, and I wouldn't mind hearing Frida do something similar, that's all.

I'm not a huge Spice Girls fan, but credit where credit is due. For one thing, they were not just interchangeable paper dolls put up to sing the songs given them. To my immense surprise, they actually wrote or co-wrote much of their material. They should get some credit for that.
Once in a moment of boredom, I actually went to see their movie. It was no Citizen Kane of course, but (also to my immense surprise) I found myself laughing from time to time. (Yes, I mean in the way that the filmmakers intended, OK?)
Bottom line for me is: they're reasonably good singers. I liked some of their songs. But let's face it, they were predicated on a gimmick. No matter how good or bad their music would prove to be, their flashy, upbeat appearance and energy appealed to little girls who wanted to be as pretty, famous, energetic, and fun as the Spice Girls seemed to be. I'm pretty sure that's what Simon Cowell had in mind anyway when he put the group together.

On November 1st 1996 Frida was the main guest at the norwegian talkshow "Wiese" - recorded live in the NRK-studio in Oslo. I was there on my first row-seat (guess why... hehe). First there was a one hour show. Then a newsbreak - then another 30 minutes with the main guest (that night Frida).
During the first hour The Spice Girls visited the show doing one of their first hits. I was totally blank on who this was, and was studying their style / costumes... thinking..... how straaaaaaaange they've wanted to look THAT different to each other (I mean - I didn't have the clue on the girls). I was certainly not charmed by them.
Imagine - they probably must have met Frida "backstage".
The next day I went to Stockholm to be in the audience for "Sverige/Sovjet" where Frida did "Ögonen". On the Oslo Airport I "stumbled over" the Spice Girls (no VIP-service for them at that time), and thought... "Oh, that's those girls from last night!"
But did I ask for autographs... nope... hehehehehe
And now they're coming back... weeeeell... really couldn't care less... hehe...

There's no real substance to them- they appealed (and prob still do) to a certain type of gay man (think screaming, attention seeking, camp nonsense ) and pubescent girls. Laughable, really- they are blown out of the water when you consider most other bands of REAL, intrinsic talent and charisma. 'Posh' is a talentless joke who looks like a lollipop. Geri is, as I believe Robbie Williams said, a demonic little girl, Mel B couldn't get a job in Mc Donalds (the Avid Merrion version is MUCH better- ''Me grapes!" LOL), 'Baby', well she's ok, she was in AbFab so she can't be all bad; the only one with a semblance of talent is Melanie C.

There has to be a lot of money driving this reunion, and I expect it includes TV contracts. I won't pay to see the Spice Girls in Concert (and fight the crowds of screaming teenagers), but I'd be anxious to check out their act on TV. Not just for the music, but to see what they wrap around it. However, I'm prepared for it to be complete nonsense.
I sincerely doubt they'll cover an ABBA tune, although Emma and Melanie C could be A & A-F. Let's see, Posh could be Björn, but would Ginger or Scary be Benny?? :rotfl2:

I have no favorite Spice Girl. None of them ever will reach the ABBA Ladies.
Joachim, you´re right, the best solo music was made from Melanie C. I like some of her songs, especially "First Day Of My Life".
Geri Halliwell sung (only) one very good song in 2001: "Calling Out Your Name".

Re: Spice Girls (including solo careers)
merton - 06.07.2007, 22:52
I liked some Spice Girl tracks especially Spice Up Your Life, but individually there are real question marks about the actual talent of the girls. I'm just not sure how serious the music business is to them. Could one say for example that Geri truly wants to be singer or is she just playing at it for the fame and money? I really like the Italian titled song she did, can't remember the name of it now, but it's a GUILTY PLEASURE song for me because part of me thinks, she is has been propped up with vocal so much help to make her sound good that if you took away the foundations, she would fall apart talent-wise.
Likewise she did an annoying cover of It's Raining Men, how hard would that have been to concoct?
Sorry if I am being cruel and upsetting anyone over this, but to me musical integrity is important, if an artist is just doing something for the fame and money, then I go off them pretty quick.
As for the reunion tour, it's got to be money-driven. None of them have shown much interest in their musical careers and driving them forward internationally that I can recall.
I thank God that Abba didn't reuninte for that money offer. I would have lost all respect for them unless they were genuinely wanting to give the fans something back and enhance their own enjoyment of life.

Re: Spice Girls (including solo careers)

well people. lets see here. the most famous and the one that did the best for solo is in fact not emma or mel c. its geri. she got 4 number 1 hits in the UK. one number 2, and her last single (2004) "ride it" got to number 4. in 1999 she became a goodwill ambassedor. she made 2 yoga videos which sold tons, and she wrote 2 novels. she sold the most expensive peice of clotheing (her 1997 tour outfit. the british flag one. and is in the guinness world records for doing so.) she also was in 4 different television shows. example. sex and the city.
and yes gay guys like the spice girls. geri infact made a song called G.A.Y for the pride day. she loves gay guys and says "i feel like a gay man trapped in a womans body"
Spice girls solo number 1 hits. (british)
Geri got 4, number 1's
mel C got 2, number 1's.
Mel B got 1, number 1
Emma got 1, number 1
victoria got 0, number 1's
and people saying they are no good lets look at it this way then.
British number 1 hits
agnetha got 0, number 1's
frida got 0, number 1's
so yeah... thats just comparing the two bands. (i like abba (agnetha) better tho)
i grew up with spice girls since my childhood was in the 1990's so yes they were the biggest thing ever for me. that is why im trying to defend one of my favourite bands. i hope some of that info can show you that they must have some talent to be able to get a number 1 hit outside of the spice girls.

geri halliwells song "its raining men" heres some info about the song.
The song became a huge hit, selling close to 4 million copies worldwide, in the United World Chart it hit no. 2 (behind "Lady Marmalade" by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & Pink) based on Sales, Airplay and Votes,[9] it become the second best selling single of 2001.

You know, it is interesting. Back in the days of the "other" ABBA site, the subject of an ABBA reunion would often pop up. Some fans would post wistful messages expressing how they longed for such a reunion, while others would be more, umm, demanding. Still, for the most part, even the most unreasonable fan (you know the ones, those who would claim that ABBA "owed" fans a reunion) rarely took them to task for refusing that money offer. Sure, the occasional person would say that if they didn't want the $$ they should still reunite and give it to charity (which was a roundabout way of saying the "they owe us" thing) but for the most part people were okay about them turning the money down. So, it seems that many feel as Merton expressed above. I didn't really follow the Spice Girls phenomenon back in their heyday, though of course, I couldn't ignore it, but I seem to recall that respect was not something they got a lot of at that time. I think some felt their positive message (girl power, wasn't it?) was deserving of some respect, but I'm not sure they really got across what that was supposed to mean. Most of the attention they received seemed to be about their antics or their outfits. Yes, they sold a lot of product, but it seemed at the time that a lot of that (not all, of course) was due to pre-teen girls having more buying power than ever before. So, one can't help but wonder if there would be any respect for them now, since it appears so apparent that their reunion is all about money. Maybe that's not a fair observation, since pretty much all I know about it is what I've read here. It will be interesting to see if they can "recapture" any degree of success, or if they will be merely a curiosity to all but their diehard fans.
Meanwhile, as time passes ABBA seems to gain more and more respect, not just for turning down a reunion for money, but for the now apparent timelessness of their music. Much as I loved their music from the start, I never expected this to be the case.

Thanks for the info Aggie-fan!
I wouldn't criticize them too much about doing what they have been doing even if doing it for money as well - they all do it for money too. However, I don't believe money would be the only motive for any star - artists also enjoy performing, singing and dancing. Remember all those annoying money questions (and accusations after all) directed at ABBA?
After all, we all work for money..
About Raining Man - I remember I heard some place that the singer of Weather Report criticized the arrangement of the song, because it seemed to her it sounded like background music of a porno film! :o I thought that was particularly mean because I liked Geri's cover and the clip and besides, you could take almost any song and announce the music comes from a porno. :P

well i know they are doing it just for the money.. and its because none of their latest solo acts are doing any good. lol see i can still agree with you guys on that part. and i dont think the tour will be very good. ( i just have a feeling it will be a flop... like their last album) haha
but i find it kinda interesting that they are going to be using their 1997 costumes for this tour. kinda like when abba did that in 1980 or 81? (i cant remember the year lol) when they put on their old waterloo costumes.

MMM I did sound vehement didn't I on that quote? lol Oh well, I stick by my thoughts. As much as it irritates me that Abba won't properly appear together in some form, i'd hate to see them rush into some sort of insincere reunion.
Can't add anymore about the Spice Girls reunion, like I said I enjoyed some of their songs for what it's worth, they generated some fun and lightness in pop music to contrast against the darker trends of rap and hardcore hip hop, but you have to wonder why Victoria Beckman for example would suddenly want to subject herself to a singing tour when she seems more interested in appearing before cameras....But the official line is that they want to do it for their fans and want to spend some time together.
As for Geri's It's Raining Men. Having been brought up on the original Weather Girls' version, I can't get interested in the cover version which stripped the soul and sassiness out of it completely, whether it was a huge hit or not. As for porno movie connotations, wasn't it used in the movie Bridget Jones' Diary, quite a respectable movie!

That sounds quite reasonable to me even if not every single reason (read: money) is not mentioned. As for Victoria, I think she is the only Spice who is really not doing it for money, but exactly for what you said Merton: appearing before cameras! Her husband David Beckham, being a top soccer player is certainly loaded. She must be feeling bored and maybe she misses singing (   - Posh and singing??)

Yes, Weather Girl, not Weather Report! :D Well, of course the original is always better than the cover of course. Has any ABBA cover been made that is better than the original? No way. The only exception being Frida's cover of Life on Mars (and I know not everybody is going to agree with this one as well.. 8) ). As for the soul and sassiness, I just don't know. Both versions appear all right to me, to be honest. And the original also sounds very much like taken out from a porno film. That's why I was surprised at such a statement by Weather Girl.
By the way, which version was used in BJ Diary?

Platobird, since when has hair colour got anything to do with vocal talent?! :stupid:
And Fire and Ice, I agree 'Baby' looked stupid with those pig tails but she doesn't look like that now and in interviews she comes across as very down to earth and self-deprecating. Plus, she's friends with Jennifer Saunders (of AbFab fame) and she is the bees knees to me so if she's good enough for Jen, she's good enough for me! LOL ( I admit she DOES have the flimsiest of voices, however... )

Geri's version was used in BJD. And you simply can't compare the wonderful Marsha Wash with the likes of Geri Halliwell! There's is no comparison- they (Weather Girls) belted it out like pro's whereas Geri's version was antiseptic and soulless. Plus she looked like a head on a stick in the video due to her eating disorder, poor lamb! NOT a good look.

I'm anxious to see how the SGs present their concert tour, that is, what demographic will they target. For example, the Madonna Confessions thing was ridiculous. I'm not sure that demographic exists, or if it does, what's happened to the world. (Maybe I'm out of touch with reality.) 8)

It seems all we can do now is wait for the next shoe to drop - or to fly across the dressing room. I'm sure there'll be some press coverage when they start the tour. (I'll check out the costume coverage; watching for them to surpass Frida's tour shorts.) :D

I think she is selling Adidas trainers or something. But she doesn't appear to be a mere head on a stick either!
As for good music... only MelC might have been responsible for that - within reason.

I can't understand the need for a reunion to be honest - they've only been away for 6 years - at least Take That had the decency to wait for 10 years before bothering us again!
I liked the Spice Girls at the time..ish. I bought the albums but only liked the singles really - nothing special. HOWEVER! Emma Bunton's album 'Free Me' is just amazing - one of my all-time favourites which is something I never thought I'd say!
Couldn't give two hoots about the rest of the silly bitches.

The trouble with the Spice Girls is that despite the catchy songs which I acknowledge they had etc, they are more well known as celebrities rather than singers.
Victoria Beckham & Geri Halliwell are two examples.
Does it matter in the long run? Probably not. Except that the Spice Girls may go down in history as paparazzi favourites rather than talented artists.
It doesn't help that Victoria can't leave the camera lens alone for one nano second.
I still prefer the sheer class of Agnetha and Frida in this respect.

AND AND the spice girls are coming to CANADA!! yay! to BC tho... so i might just get tickets to see them in USA instead. i cant wait!

The reviews are in for the Spice Girls concert this week in San Jose, California. I originally said I would go if they appeared locally, then after I saw the ticket prices, I decided there's better ways to spend my money. I think I'm both happy and sad about my choice. 8)
First, the headline in my local paper for the review is: "Spice Girls Perfect Recipe for Fun 'n Frivolous Pop". (Maybe I should post this in the food topic. ) In any event, Frivolous Pop is not what I like to hear.
Posh wore a gorgeous tight-fitting gold pant-and-corset outfit, while Baby wore a cute short dress; and Ginger rocked a sexy, even shorter hemline. Scary and Sporty weren't nearly as successful wardrobewise. The former wore a reptilian-patterened jumpsuit, and the latter was in a spacy workout suit that seem straight out of the Battlestar Galactia closet. OMG
They started the show 40 minutes late, and after a few songs, according to the article they "used up a goodly portion of their best material (their songbook isn't what one would call deep)." Continuing, "Scary ... was more than a bit frightening as she tried to handle a solo version of Lenny Kravitz's Are You Gonna Go My Way." Next, "Ginger brought down the house with ... It's Raining Men." Finally, they sang "Wannabe" complete with a vocal flub by Scary.
So I'm not disappointed I missed the show that was on the stage. However, apparently there was another show to see. That is, the review begins with this: "The young, mostly female crowd came dressed for the occasion, wearing the type of mico-dresses and micro-shorts the might make a parent faint." That's a show I'd pay to see. :boogie:

Certainly seems that way. More like a damp squid than the huge hoo-hah they no doubt expected from the public. And let's face it, they're no longer 'girls' anymore (miaow) and not one of them is what you'd call a great singer (Mel C being the best of the bunch). Did like Viva Forever, tho...

public lost interest?? i dont think so. i went all the way from saskatoon saskachewan, to montreal quebec, just to see them. their concert was sold out the first day they were on sale, and well the concert was more then awesome. the whole crowd went crazy for the spice girls, and their concert was the best i have seen and i have seen many different artists. (and no the spice girls aren't my favourite) they were the typical diva's tho. only 2 hours late for the show. but it was well worth the wait, and it was well worth the money to see them (tickets, hotel and plane cost around $2000.00 can.)
so about the public losing interest.. i beg to differ.

The Spice Girls Musical won't last long. ABBA have far more well
known Songs - hence the success of 'Mamma Mia!'.
The Spice Girls Musical will go the same way as 'Daddy Cool', the
Boney M Musical.
In London 'Daddy Cool' lasted from September 2006 to February 2007.
In Berlin, only from from April to July 2007.
I can't see the Spice Girls Musical being much more successful. Their
Songs have been around since 1996, & I only know about 12 of them.
Even though I have heard their Album Tracks many times.
They just don't have the 'ABBA Sparkle', I'm afraid.....

I don't have high hopes really, but I think that with such a high profile launch and the associated big names wholeheartedly getting behind it (which didn't happen with Daddy Cool or the Blondie musical), its first booking period at least should be a pretty good one. I understand it's already impossible to get decent seats for Fridays or Saturdays.
But, alas, I don't think it has staying power. I already have a bet with a friend that when ticket sales start to dwindle, either Mel C or Emma will end up actually appearing in it. There's a company I've never heard of doing the marketing for it, which can only be a good thing. AKA used to market shows at the Piccadilly and they have been notorious for flogging dead horses there (Grease and Guys & Dolls are recent examples).
Wow, that was a really boring post. My sincerest apologies.
Re: Spice Girls (including solo careers)

Re: Spice Girls (including solo careers)

^^ I wouldn't say any of them were particularly good singers, not even Mel C- she strains a bit. She was still the best of the bunch, though. But that wasn't what The Spice Girls were about.
If Mel C has a little more of a softer accent now then good for her. People can and do change.
I've always thought of them ALL as being pretty 'common' and fairly down to earth. The odd profanity doesn't bother me- unless it goes overboard.
Re: Spice Girls (including solo careers)

It will be interesting to see if the musical proves popular, I would imagine the "girls" still have a fairly large fanbase and I liked a good few of their singles. There were a couple of decent solo tracks after the band disintegrated but, I have to say, I don't find any of them particularly interesting as people and I don't think their personalities are that attractive TBH.

I think the spice girls were absolutely dreadful, they have no redeeming features and to me they sum up how god-awful 90's pop music was. They were also a big marketing con, girl power ? what a joke, when you compare their inane childish nonsense with the majesty of a group like Abba it makes you realise just how pop music plummeted in quality after the 70's. Just my opinion by the way, if you happen to like the spice girls don't take offence,as none is intended.
Re: Spice Girls (including solo careers)

^^For what it's worth, I absolutely agree with you, I really do. Utter rubbish in the main.. and don't get me started on so-called 'Girl Power'! :x
Having said that, I may not really be a fan of the music.. but I liked Viva Forever a lot and I really do like Mel C. She just seems grounded and not 'up herself', if you know what I mean. I don't want to get into a 'let's slag The Spice Girls off' rant but I truly believe 'Posh' to be devoid of any talent whatsover (she can pout, wear clothes and, to be fair, she IS funny and self deprecating), Emma is just well, 'fluffy' and I have no real opinion of her either way, Geri- oh God, where do I start? I'd best not. Same with Mel B- she gives me a headache just listening to her voice.
Basically, I think there's not a great deal of actual, real talent in any of them- they just got lucky. But I do like Mel C- she seems lovely. And she has some talent, at least.

Girl Power got on my nerves. It wasn't new, & it wasn't even interesting.
It was just a gimmick to help to Market the Spice Girls.
I recall that the UK Press would report everything any of the 5 Girls
said. When Mel B said that the UK was the first Country to rebel against
the Roman Empire, the Press went on as if we had a quote from the
World's top Historian! (Mel B's statement was 100% garbage, by the way).
However, they made a huge impact in a very short time. In the USA
they managed 2 Top 10 Albums. ABBA never got higher than No.11.
('Gold' in 2008). I was astounded when the USA put 'Spice' at No.1,
in 1997. For 5 Weeks. Then, their 2nd Album, 'Spice World', was a
No.3 USA Hit. To me, their Pop was nowhere near as good as ABBA's.
In the USA Singles Chart, they had 4 Top 10 Hits - just like ABBA.
But, they did slightly better than ABBA's four - 1, 3, 4, & 9, to ABBA's
6, 1, 3, & 8.
But, the USA success fast ran out. Their 3rd Album - 'Forever' - could
get no higher than No.39, & their 'Greatest Hits' Album, (2007), only
reached No.93.
I doubt if the Musical will have much impact on their UK Sales. I'm
not expecting high re-charting Albums, or big Download Singles. It
was different for ABBA. The opening of 'Mamma Mia!', in 1999, made
'Gold' return to No.1 - 3 times that Year, & it became the 4th Best
Seller of the Year. And 'More Gold' re-charted at No.13 - 1 place
higher than it reached in 1993.
I see the Spice Girls Musical as a passing fad. It is not going
to start any kind of big Spice Girls revival.
I like 'Viva Forever' too. That 1998 No.1 did not even have
them in the Video. Animated Puppets were used, instead. It
showed that if you are popular, a Group need not even be together
to promote Singles with Videos.....(It gave me ideas for ABBA, &
some of their old Album Tracks).

Melanie C & Emma Bunton - I Know Him So Well
Former Spice Girl Melanie C has recorded a version of I Know Him So Well with other former spice girl Emma Bunton.
It's on her upcoming album of show songs called Stages.
Can't imagine this will be a version to treasure, but as always great to see a Chess song (or any B&B musical song) getting covered.
It's not released yet, but this is the link for iTunes so you can hear part of it as and when it is.

It seems this has been moved to Other Artists etc. While I will bow to whoever thinks it should be in this thread, I feel it should be in Chess, as it is to do with Chess and I would NEVER dream of looking at a thread about the Spice Girls or any other artist, but I would like to know about cover versions of Chess songs, threads about which I would hope to find in Chess - which I check regularly to keep informed about Chess and Chess related activities. Just my opinion.

If ONLY Frida had recorded an album of show songs like this! It would have become a classic among all musical fans! She would have brought such interesting depths and vocals to these great songs - in my dreams only :o(

I think it's not a good idea to have I Know Him So Well discussed here. People (like me) won't find this thread if they're not interested in Spice Girls (like me). I think there should be an extra thread in the related artists-topic.
