ABBA - The Compact Disk Pioneers
Hey All... Just saw this...

http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/8869

''The CD celebrated its 25th birthday yesterday 20th June. ABBA’s album The Visitors was the first commercially released Compact Disc; it introduced a new level of sound quality to the general consumer and changed the way music could be heard in the mass market.''

Nice to see ABBA as the CD Pioneers :D

I am really proud, that an ABBA album was the first commercial CD pressing!

Many years later, in 1991, I bought "The Visitors" on CD, together with all other ABBA studio albums. I was one of the music fans who were against CDs. I thouhgt the good old LPs will never die, but in the nineties there was no chance anymore for vinyl fans......

I never knew this. I was like you Toni, against CDs. I wanted my vinyl. I still do!

Please read the article (and the comments) again. "The Visitors" wasn't the first commercial cd release!

Joachim

PS: I'm not sorry that times of noisy, scratched vinyls are over in general.

1ST THE VISITORS CD
I got my 1st CD of The Visitors in 1983, it didn't even have a bar code on the back, which I think came later, all there is on the back where there should be a barcode is a blank white space! I bought it even though I did not have a CD player, I got a CD player in 1986!

I notice they have changed the article now... But ABBA was still i guess used as a pioneer in the test pressings :P

There was an article in the International ABBA Magazine about these new discs that "You could eat your dinner off". Benny and Bjorn are featured in a picture holding The Visitors in their hands and by their side is a whopping BIG CD player! They knew they would catch on as they predicted everything would go digital. And so here we are today!

I still have the Original cds releases I never did buy the remastered cds at all, due to the fact the originals work just as good as when i brought them in the early eighties. however I have changed the cd box's as they tend to get scratched over the years

Count me among those who bought CDs before the player. Funny - I thought I was the only one who did that :) I had been saving money for a trip, and I planned to buy one after, but in the meantime, I bought most of my ABBA CDs because I feared by the time I got the player they wouldn't be available anymore. Of course, as it turned out I need not have worried, but it was the early 90s, just before the revival so at the time the fear was justified.

PS: I'm not sorry that times of noisy, scratched vinyls are over in general.

that reminds me of my favorite John Peel qoute:

Somebody was trying to tell me that CDs are better than vinyl because they don't have any surface noise. I said, "Listen, mate, life has surface noise." :P :P :P

form the article: The first people to hear a full album on CD may well have been developers listening to ABBA,
So I guess it safe to say some of the engineers working on the CD were ABBA fans.
Fire&Ice - 01.07.2007, 10:37

I also bought a CD first and only a few days later a CD player.

It was "ABBA Interview disc and fully illustrated book" by Nina Rasmussen, later on followed by all the albums and what not on CDs! Of course I was dying to hear the disc..

I started whining to my husband for a discman but being a music fan himself, he decided to buy a proper equipment! Lucky me. 8)

I still say you cannot beat the original vinyl - how the music was meant to have been played

I never knew that. Wow.......

So they were CD pioneers, AND they popularized the use of the music video.

Never mind all the fabulous music they created.

So WHY, exactly, are they not in the RR HOF???

There was a piece on euro news yesterday mentioning that The Visitors was one off the first compact discs and it was 25 years old it featured a small snippet of Abba music and Abba videos

lovefridax - 01.07.2007, 16:23

The article Didi refers to in The International Abba magazine is about The Visitors being the first Abba pressing on cd, dont think Abba were the first on cd though.

I miss the days of going into a record shop and coming out with a 7in single, lp, cassette and if you were lucky a pic disc.
Bring back vinyl, there is room for it and i think demand for it.

And i too was one of those who bought Abba cds, way before i had a player.

Where are those happy days, they seem so far away.

For nostalgia reasons yes, I guess I miss vinyl for that reason, but I don't miss the hiss, crackles and needle jumping all over the place. And the constant trips back to the shop taking the record back for the above reasons. Long live digital I say.
