Winner Takes.......... Agnetha or chanson style?
Quote from Mamma Mia book :
Louise Pitre (cast of Mamma Mia) :
Benny "told me that the way I had sung "TWTIA" was the way he had always imagined it. Because he had written it as a chanson."
Now, I couldn't bring myself to watch Mamma Mia when it came to Singapore - in case they murdered the songs. So, I've no idea how well this song came out. From the description above, I imagine it was Piaf's "chanson" style and I do love Piaf. Agnetha sang it in a very intimate style which I simply adore.
My question is would you have preferred it if Agnetha had done it "chanson" style?

Never. Just compare 'Bravo Tu As Gagne' (Mireille Mathieu's version of TWTIA) to the original one. I once did, and I can tell you I could not stand it. She totally ruined the song to my opinion, because the way Agnetha sung this one was already perfect. Natural, and filled with true emotion which fits the song best, not with an overdone vocal. (which is to me, specific for the realy French chansons) The fact that they ever recorded Bravo Tu As Gagne anyway might be because Benny liked the chanson-style I realize now, but to me the Mama Mia! version of TWTIA turned out to be not as chanson-ish as this piece of text described.
So don't feel worried, you can easily enjoy the show without your worries.

I like the way Tommy Körberg sung "The winner takes it all" on the "Waterloo till duvemala" Album. It had some kind of Jazz-feeling

I've seen Mamma Mia in London and Utrecht and really can't remember if "The Winner takes it all" was sung in chansonstyle. Probably because it failed to make an impression on me. But I do remember thinking that there is only one version of the song that moves me and thats Agnetha's version.

NEVER!!!! I was at MM in London and they used the song as a power song: I hated it and the same goes for the dutch version.

Sasha wrote that Tommy Korberg did a nice jazzy version. I recall someone else mentioned that Michael Ball also did justice to the song. I tried to find Ball's version but couldn't but knowing him, his would be the "intimate" style.
Does this lead us to conclude that when it is sung by a woman, noone holds a candle to Agnetha? The men seem to do fine with this song.

To me "The Winner Takes It All" is one of Agnetha´s best performances. It´s very difficult to sing it and Agnetha does it perfect, but I think perhaps a chancon version of her would have sounded good, too. I don´t know. Nothing is impossible.

Your question is hypothetical and there's nothing wrong with that but IMO Agnetha couldn't have done a better 'job' on TWTIA if she tried. It has EVERTYHING- and her vocal is one of her heart-rending best. Apart from the mockers I don't see how anyone with a heart could fail to be moved by her performance in this song; it's almost too raw although Agnetha did say she 'acted' the part as she didn't want to 'capsize' the melody! Genius!
