    Searching B17G tail number
    Hello everybody!

This is the only piece we have concerning a B17 which crashed on september 11th 1944 in France, without her crew which bailed out before the crash.

Is it possible to find out the aircraft tail number with only this piece?

    Thanks in advance.

    Fafa from France.

    Fafa,

    welcome to our board :D

A identification with this plate is not possible, but I have found two B-17 with a possible crash this date in this area:

    B-17 42-102657 LN-Y
MIA during target Fulda / Germany
Crashed at Schuiederberg (Dutch ? Holland?)
    5 KIA 4POW

    B-17 42-102675
MIA during target Merseburg / Germany
Crashed at Aeltrebruegge ? Exact name of location unknown

This are all lost B-17 this date in your area, all other bomber crashed at Germany. http://www.armyairforces.com/dbmacr-date.asp

Here a diagram of the location from your plate:

    Nils,
according to the 379th BGA website.
42-102675 made a forced landing in Belgium near Aalterbrug, west of Ghent.
    http://www.379thbga.org/379th_b26/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?700

the plane Fafa is trying to identify might not have a MACR.
if it crashed in a liberated part of France the crew would not be missing. if they fell into allied hands no MACR would be created.

    Fafa,
which part of France was the part found.? had that area been liberated by then?

    Regards
    Roy

    Thanks for your answers.
Yes this part of France was liberated at this time, it's near Troyes region, Aube department.
That's why it is still a mystery for us, but we are working on it.

    You're getting very close !!
The one from Nully is identified, we got a lot of things about this one.
But the over one crashed 20 minutes after the Nully one, around 5 km away.
We have only the piece above and some witnesses.

close is not good enough, sadly.

how many of the aircraft lost on that day have you eliminated from your search?.
it must be possible to do it that way.

    Hi Fafa and other guys,
I think, this plane should be B-17G 44-6120 of 92nd BG. Crew of Lt. Norris bailed out over France, crossing front lines.

I am researching this particular day - 11th September 1944 - for several years. Upon my records, in France that day crashed these fortresses:
    - 44-6120 - place unknown - 92BG
    - 42-97767 - Sommevoire / Nully, France - 92BG
    - 43-38161 - Joigny/France (Sens) - 100th BG (for this one I have pretty info)
    - ??? 43-38057 - emergency landing Paris - 303BG (I am not sure about this one if it really happen on 11.9.44)

    - possibly also crashlanding of two B-24
    - S/N unknown to me - from 453BG - that is all I know
    - 42-95007 - C/L Romily Fr. ? - 491BG

From this I believe, the piece you have found, if is really from 11.9.1944 should be from 44-6120.

I will be happy to share with you your and mine knowlendge about 11th September 1944.
    Best regards, Jan

BTW - the above mentioned 42-102675 crashed at "Aalter b. Maldegem b. Brugge, BE". The name shall be used also as "Alterbrügge b. Maldegin, Belgium". The difference is because of German and Belgina versions of the name.
The second mentioned 42-102657 crashed in Schmiedeberg, Sudetenland - former Czechoslovakia; today Kovarska, Czech Republic. The plane exploded in mid air... the bomb-bay crashed just about 10 seconds by walk from where I am actually sitting with my comuter and writting this message...
    Best regards, Jan
