IT's a sight to scare off anyone tempted to enter the water this winter.
Juvenile great white sharks like this one photographed cruising close to the shore have been spotted in large numbers north of Sydney.
It's not a new phenomenon.
The predators are becoming part of the scenery around the Port Stephens region at this time of year as they chase schools of salmon.
Salmon is a primary food source for juvenile great white sharks that travel up to 1000km to feeding locations.
Fisherman say the numbers of Australian salmon, a native fish not known for its culinary value, have soared. They have even been seen off the North Coast.
"It's like stopping in a cafe where there is good food and then going on you're way, it's the same for the sharks," shark expert Andrew Fox said.
"Great white sharks at Port Stephens have been a phenomena for the past couple of years because of the salmon but it's not in plague proportions - thousands travel up and down the coast at any one time."
