from thread NEWS in Eddie Spears thread (page 14)
redc ,i hoep you didn't mind me quoting you :?
redc wrote: On Eddie's & Michael's IMDB pages there is a listing that you can only read if you have a pro account - as I do - I thought I'd share the news.
At this time the movie is in early development (script) and Eddie & Michael are just rumoured to be cast. Joanne Shenandoah is also rumoured as actress. The film's name is Maid of the Mist - anyone who lives near Niagara Falls knows there are two boats called Maid of the Mist, so for me reading that I instantly thought "it's gotta be about Niagara Falls" - sure enough it is.
The premise of the film is: In 1670 the chief's beautiful daughter, Lelawala, becomes the last virgin to be sacrificed over the Niagara Falls.
The locations mentioned at this time are:
Buffalo, New York, USA
Niagara Falls, New York, USA
North Tonawanda, New York, USA
All about an hours drive from Toronto. Mmmm....road trip?
The production company behind this film is Captures Entertainment and they are located in North Tonawanda (which is near Buffalo). Nothing has be mentioned on their website just yet. They also do distribution, world wide so that could be a good thing.
The project was optioned in April 2007 and, I'm guessing, the script is in works as of July 11 2007 (or is complete as of July - not really sure what it means). So it doesn't say when shooting will begin but I'm thinking not until next summer - winters here can be brutal. I guess it depends on the time of season of the story.
Here's what they have listed as crew (so far):
Directed by - Bill Cowell (owner of Captures Entertainment)
Writers - Gerald Schoenewolf
Producers - Bill Cowell ... producer
Cast:
Michael Spears ... (rumored)
Eddie Spears ... (rumored)
Joanne Shenandoah ... (rumored)
Gotta say the more I read about it, I'm thinking small budget, indie film, may end up on TV (I know the Buffalo stations would air it) or (as it seems from reading Captures website) direct to DVD (oh the horror).
As this is just in development, anything can change, nothing is written in stone.
Did some surfing and came across a folk story about the Maid of the Mist - it's a lovely story but doesn't quite match the "sacrifice" story that this movie is supposedly about. IMHO I think the folklore story is much better:
Maid of the Mist
Ah ha - found another version of the similiar story linked above:
Maid of the Mist sacrifice
Mmmm...two sons (and the younger one "winning" the girl)...mmm...makes me wonder.

Looks like I need to make a road trip!! I'm about 4 or 5 hours away from Niagara Falls, and went to the National Park three years ago. It was so beautiful and I can't wait to see the film. I've been looking up the story online, it does seem very interesting.
We have a local story here in Ohio that I would love to see made into a film. It's about Mary Campbell and the Lenape Indians (or Deleware as they have been called). Mary was taken hostage at the age of 12 and lived with them until she was 16, when she was given back to her birth family against her will. And of course, the white general attacked the Lenapes after they promised a peacefull exchange. However, the life she lead with the Lenape Indians was very educational and she tried to rejoin them for two years after her "release". Finally when she was 18, she married an Englishman and moved back to Pennsylvania. She never talked about her indian life after that. It would be facinating to know what she really went through- and not just the speculation historians make.

Last night hubby and I were watching a program on the Travel Channel about the national parks, and Niagara Falls was shown. Needless to say, I told hubby about the movie, and he wasn't as intrigued as I am. Go figure!
Does anyone know when the filming will begin?
evenstar - 28.11.2007, 09:00
Hey, this is great news!
redc - 28.11.2007, 18:29
Mouse - nope. But I do remember that the status of the film was in script phase the last time I checked...which, with the writer's strike is probably not a good thing.
Based on the story, I was thinking that they'd do the shooting in Spring/Summer 2008 for a 2009 release date - but who knows - with the strike and all, it could be pushed back. :?
mouseears89 - 28.11.2007, 22:24
Well, at least the guys are confirmed for the roles and they seem to have a lot going on to keep them busy until shooting begins.
I've been to Niagara Falls one time, but would love to go back. Of course, I've only seen the American side- so next time I want to cross the border and see the "upscale" Canadian side. I'm sure the movie will be shot on the Canadian side as the US side doesn't offer as much of a view. But then again- the US side is less populated. We'll have to wait and see.
