Despite their portrayal as eating machines that feed 24-7, catching a shark isn't a sure thing. That was evident at the St. George Island Shark Fishing Classic held this past Saturday.

The 67 experienced shark fishermen entered in the contest only brought in 12 sharks. Jerry Ison, a main sponsor of the event and owner of the Jolly Roger Beach Shop, the official measuring station (the sharks were measured, not weighed), said a front had passed through the day before, causing a pressure change that put the many hundreds of sharks in Apalachicola Bay off their normally-aggressive feed. Even so, sharks more than 8-feet long were brought in.

David Avante, a Tallahassee real estate agent, was chairman/chief organizer of the event. He resurrected the shark tournament, which had been running off and on since the 1980s, because as a surfer and fisherman he saw that the sharks were becoming more numerous - and potentially threatening.

“As long as we followed the state regulations of one shark per angler, no harm was done to the population,” Avante said. “Plus, most of the sharks brought in were taken away to be eaten.”

But that justification wasn't enough to keep pickets away. Several Florida State University students from the Humane Society of the United States placed themselves at the entrance to St. George Island, waved blue signs and passed out flyers denouncing the event.

Ison and Avante both said the society does a great job with cats and dogs, but its members don't know much about marine fisheries. “It's fishermen and hunters who pay for the research through our license fees,” said Avante.

Ison said tournament proceeds go to worthwhile causes. This year $700 ($350 from the tournament and a matching grant by Ison) went to rebuild the historic lighthouse on the island that fell into the sea in 2005. Ison and Avante said that next year they will challenge the Humane Society to match them in a donation to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, to be earmarked for shark research in the St. George Island area.

The largest shark of the event, which ran from 12:01 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 4, was caught by Clay Bailey of Apalachicola. His 8-foot-9 lemon shark was caught out of West Pass, and only put up a short fight. The shark took a whole grouper head fished in 30 feet of water.

It was an uneventful catch until the fish was brought aboard the 25-foot Mako (appropriate) he was fishing from. The shark bit him - sort of.

Bailey was barefoot when the fish apparently turned toward him. Bailey kicked, the shark's mouth was open, his foot slipped and now he has a few holes to deal with. So much for kung fu fighting with a shark.

Second place went to David Gehres of Tallahassee for a 7-foot-7 bull shark. He was on the same boat as Bailey, and said he missed five other sharks that day.

Kevin Libby of Carrabelle was third with a 4-foot-7 bull shark. He fished East Pass and used a stingray for bait. Libby, who does a lot of shark fishing, said he was somewhat ashamed of his fish.

“I normally catch bigger fish,” he said. “I wish they'd have more tournaments like this. We need them.”

Libby's shark was iced down and ready for eating by the time the tournament wrapped up.

The team winner was Andrew Ison and Aaron Burrows. They caught a 7-foot hammerhead while fishing with Captain Tom Holland. Their fish fought for more than 90 minutes. They lost an even bigger shark that towed them from East Pass into West Bay - without stopping.

Josh Corriel, 14, of Crawfordville won the youth division. His 3-foot blacktip was also destined for the dinner table. Josh and his father John fished East Pass from midnight to about 7 a.m. They caught several smaller sharks, which were all released.

Avante said plans for next year's tournament call for catch-and-release for anglers who don't want to bring the shark in.

“We'll give them poles marked in 1-foot increments that they can hold next to the shark while it's in the water and photograph it,” he said. “That should make some of the protestors happy, and maybe bring in more fishermen.”

He's also considering hanging some of the sharks for display before the anglers take them away for processing. This will hopefully attract more tourists, which was another reason for the tournament.
