    Radioactivity of Luftwaffe Instruments
    Hello to everyone,
Does anyone know why there is written on board instruments of WW2 German Aircrafts the word: "RADIOAKTIV" on yellow ribbon. Is it because of the Phosphor applied to the instruments for night vision? I noticed that sign during my last visit to the Me262 and Bf109 in Deutsches Museum / Munich. By the way, photos are available at request.
    Many thanks guys,
    Spyros

    Hi Spyros,
i think the instruments had radium on them not Phosphor. it was used on many things like watches and dials. this is radioactive and could be why the warning is there.
it would more likely be something that was added to the panels recently by the museum, for safety reasons. i dont think its harmful effects were understood until some time in the 1950s

    Regards
    Roy

About the radioactivity of the LW instruments
    Hi Roy,
Thank you so much for the info!
If I understood well, you mean that all these instruments I have in my collection are actually an atomic bomb in my house?? Should I worry about my family and my health? Do you have any other information about that Radium?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Spyros

    Hi Spyros,

you can find here some infos:

    http://www.onmeda.de/lexika/strahlenmedizin/strahlenbelastung_uhren.html

    See also here: http://helmut-singer.de/stock/tot114.html :

Bei der Nacharbeitung von Uhren oder Funkgeräten sollten Sie jedoch sehr vorsichtig sein: Oft finden sich dort noch Spuren radioaktiven Staubes, den Sie im eigenen Interesse nicht einatmen sollten...
Mit radioaktivem Leuchtmittel versehene Uhren und Flugzeuginstrumente sollten in keinem Fall geöffnet werden!
Siehe auch Bericht in der Ausgabe des "Spiegel" :
    http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/0,1518,321209,00.html
In diesem Zusammenhang ist auch ein "Geigerzähler" sehr hilfreich, siehe Kapitel "Strahlungsmesstechnik.

If you are interested in restoring clocks, watches and aircraft instruments***, you probably wish to apply a Non-radioactive Luminous Dial Coating .
The main ingredient of this kit is 5 g of luminous powder, which is non-radioactive (M103). Furthermore, you will find various primers and coatings. Unfortunately they are tainted, they are no longer useful.
If you use fresh paint and primer of recent production, the result will be 100%.
The luminous powder is still very good, it seems that its age doesn't matter.
The sets are unused, new old stock

    ***WARNING:
Only trained and very experienced persons should handle radioactive dials etc. This is hazardous material! Take all necessary safety precautions!!
Never open radioacive coated clocks and aircraft instruments, inhalation of radioactive dust could be lethal!
In this connection: A Geiger Counter is a very helpful tool, please see chapter "radiation test sets".

    Regards
    Nils

    Spyros,
there definatly is no risk at all from any kind of explosion.
i am not a scientist and am not able to give an answer to how harmful radium can be. its best if you read some things on the internet and make your own decisions on how your collection should be handled and stored.
i am not qualified to advise on this subject and wouldnt like to give misleading information

    Regards

    Hello Spyros,
It certainly is dangerous to work on WWII instruments. It's better not to open these. If Radiumparticles enter your lung it forms a permanent source of radiation and could be fatal in due course. The half-life of Radium is about 1500 years so it stays dangerous for a long time. Broken instruments could be sprayed with a transparent varnish to avoid Radium dust coming off from the dial. When I started this hobby in 1972 finding the first instruments at Fw 190 and Bf 109 crash sites there were already the first reports in Germany about skin cancer which were ascribed to Radium particles from Luftwaffe instruments. It's not a coincidence -I think!- when I reported this 'phenomenon' to the Dutch Air Force Authorities they add a radiation unit to their Excavation Service within a short time.
    Regards,
    Peter Monasso
