The No.1 song on your birthday
Hi I came across this website the other day which will tell you what the No.1 song was on your birthday. It relates to the US Billboard record charts I guess.

Click on the month of your birth and then the date and then scroll down to find the year.

My (US) birthday song was Everybody's Somebody's Fool by Connie Francis. Hmmm, interesting title....Like the song though at least there's a vague Abba connection, Agnetha being a Connie fan!

Cheers M

Nothing wrong with the topic, Merton.

My song is:

Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife

What on Earth is this supposed to mean?

:?:
kitty-cat - 09.06.2007, 22:52

Great topic Merton, !!!

On the day i was born it was A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles (it was a hard day's night for my mother giving birth to me lol!!)

last year it was 'Promiscuous' by Nellie Furtado

Great topic once again, Merton.

Rich Girl by Hall and Oates, on March 20, 1977.

Oddly, Dancing Queen would hit #1 in the US only 3 weeks later........ :o

This is another good site for such things- http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/member/birthdayno1.php

Nantes - 09.06.2007, 23:26

No1 when I was born was

"He's a Rebel" by The Crystals

Matt had a go at your link as well
In The UK, Telstar - by The Tornados was number 1 and
in Australia it was Working For The Man - Roy Orbison.
mangog - 09.06.2007, 23:46

Apparently mine was "Can't help falling in love" by Elvis

Hmmm, maybe someone was trying to tell me something on 10th March 1962

Mark
merton - 10.06.2007, 06:39

This is interesting, revealing about people's ages.... !!

Thanks Matt for the link which I have reprinted here in case anyone misses it. Good one as it includes Australia and UK.

For the UK, Cathy's Clown by the Everly Brothers was No.1 and in Australia it was Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport by Rolf Harris. :!: :!:

I have The Billboard Book Of Number One Songs, so I know that Duke Of Earl, by Gene Chandler, was the number one song here in the USA when I was born.
ABBAnator - 10.06.2007, 07:39

"Happy Together" by The Turtles the day I was born.

Quite prophetic actually as I've been "happy together" with my wife 21 years this month. (23 years if you count the time we dated) :love4:

In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus) by Zager & Evans...

And now I feel old! Thanks Merton! LOL!

And speaking of the year 2525... check my number of posts... 2525!

Fire&Ice - 10.06.2007, 08:34

OMG it was Can't buy me love by the Beatles!

Later on Frida covered this one and sang it perfectly in Lite Gran I Orat! :love4:
Toni - 10.06.2007, 09:05

"She Loves You" The Beatles

In the german charts also the Beatles were on nr. 1 with "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". at that time.

It´s great as I am a big Beatles fan!

Toni :D
DancingQueen - 10.06.2007, 10:05

When exactly was Dancing Queen a hit? 8) (which day?)

Anyway there seems to be a song which I've never heard of: "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Michael Bolton. Nice link!
merton - 10.06.2007, 11:12

When a Man Loves A woman - one of those kind of slow -strain your tonsils - ballads by Michael Bolton, he always had, um, not very flattering, long hair, which I think he's cut short now. You could call him a step up from Barry Manilow.

Yes, I am wondering if we have a Dancing Queen baby on this site....

Ron  your birthday song 2525 is seriously spooky given the number of posts you've done. :!: How coincidental is that!

By the way thanks for your welcome back on another topic...
It's been very  lately (up and down) but things are on the improve and it's nice to feel part of things here again.

It's a song from "The Threepenny Opera" ("Die Dreigroschenoper") about the main character, Mack the Knife. It's been sung by many other people, as well as Bobby Darin. Here's Robbie Williams singing it;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1O6x9WetyE

And here's Bobby Darin's version;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBTITHA8twI

The Swedish version of "The Threepenny Opera" (called "Tolvskillingsoperan") was recently staged at Stockholms Stadsteatern between September 2005 and June 2006, where it was a HUGE hit! (By the way, Mackie Kniven's wife in the musical, Polly Peachum, was played brilliantly by Helen Sjöholm! :D )

Oh, I almost forgot - my birthday song is "Sherry" by The Four Seasons.

Nick
Bobbysbrother - 10.06.2007, 15:03

Hi there,

gosh.... mine is the supernostalgic ballad "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan which makes me feel so sightful and languorous because:

1) It features in one of my all time favourite movies, Sofia Coppola's "The Virgin Suicides"
2) Sigh....it reflects a bit the state Im in presently. Ok, less tragically!

Andrea (wishing to have had a more cheerful birthday theme...)
imstillalive - 10.06.2007, 17:31

Mine is:

Billie Jean - Michael Jackson in the UK & US. :(

No one manged to be born when ABBA charted, yet?
philzone - 10.06.2007, 19:41

mine is the same as Johnny's. Mack The Knife-Bobby Darin.
(I'm 10 days older)

phil
merton - 10.06.2007, 20:20

Sorry to hear that Andrea. Have you tried the other link on this topic for Australian and British No.1s?

Actually, you know Gilbert O'Sullivan's song is one of my favourites, the lyrics are desperate, for sure, but it's so sincere.

Merton
johnny59 - 11.06.2007, 00:13

Oh, thanks for the explanation, Nick. Of course I know that song. The German original is called "Mackie Messer" and I didn't connect the song title to the Dreigroschenoper.

Cool song.

Und der Haifisch
der hat Zähne
und die trägt er
im Gesicht.

Und McHeath, der
hat ein Messer,
und das Messer,
sieht man nicht!
Nathan - 11.06.2007, 11:33

Fun topic, Merton!

In the UK and in the USA the number one song was "I'm A Believer" by The Monkees. LOL.

In Australia it was Snoopy vs. The Red Baron - by The Royal Guardsmen. Whoever they were!
Anonymous - 11.06.2007, 19:34

"Endless Love" by Diana Ross & Lionel Richie
merton - 11.06.2007, 20:13

My favourite Monkees song Nathan!
Bobbysbrother - 11.06.2007, 22:04

Ok merton as you suggested, I found my "revenge" n.1 birth song coming from Australia, hooray..... but I tell you, it doesnt consolate me much, haha! Its the cheesy, teenagey "Puppy Love" by Donny Osmond.
The ironic thing is that "puppy" is the nick I love to call my babes, ha!

Andrea
MMM - 12.06.2007, 04:00

Well, apparently the song everyone was listening to in the neighbouring country was "I’m Leaving It Up To You" by Dale & Grace. I've never heard of it. In England, it was "She Loves You" by The Beatles, which I am familiar with and the Australian one was "Sugar Shack" by Jimmy Gilmer & the Fireballs, which I'm pretty sure I've heard now and again, but I'm not familiar enough with it to know what it is about.

So I guess I'm a bit disappointed, as my curiosity turned into "huh"? Oh well.

Regards

Roses are Red Bobby Vinton

great Topic Merton

Just a shame Mine was not an ABBA hit. Mind you I bet there is a lucky person out there who did have ABBA number 1 on there special day.

merton - 12.06.2007, 07:54

This topic is bringing back a few memories lol - though I'm not old enough to remember when Roses Are Red came out) lol

But I do remember Puppy Love. Awwww....

Speaking of Osmonds, MMM I think Leaving It All Up To You was probably better known as a remake in the 70s by Donny and Marie Osmond....Yes I do have a Greatest Hits album. (Another "true confession").

Still waiting to see if someone was born on an Abba No.1 hit day. Not a lot of chances from the US but certainly from Australia & UK.

M
MMM - 12.06.2007, 09:57

Ahh Donny and Marie. You know, at the time of their t.v. show, I lived in an isolated town that could only receive one channel, and that channel didn't carry D & M. Every once in awhile we would go to the neighbouring town, which carried four channels, so I saw possibly five or six installments of D & M (which I only vaguely recall). Bottom line is that it is still "huh?" for that song.

Oh well, no worries. At the time I'm sure I had more important things on my mind - like "where am I?" and "feed me!"

Regards

MMM
merton - 12.06.2007, 10:29

OK I'm on a roll now.... :!:

Donny and Marie got to No.2 in the UK with I'm Leaving It All Up To You and in NZ it was their biggest hit :!: also reaching No. 2 for 3 weeks back in 1974 capitalising on the success of Donny (solo) fever.

You didn't miss much with the TV show MMM. It was somewhat syrupy. I still remember a theme tune though:

"I'm a little bit country and I'm a little bit rock'n'roll. :boogie:

(This was just an excuse to use a few more smileys)....
kitty-cat - 12.06.2007, 13:14

oooohhhhhhhh i used to love the osmonds, and the donny and Marie show, before Abba i had Osmonds pics on the wall. They soon came off though when i discovered Abba :love4: ( I still have a soft spot for Donny though  )

In the UK, mine was 'Puppet On A String' by Sandie Shaw which won Eurovision for us in 1967 - perhaps it was a sign that a group that would shortly win Eurovision also would be the most important thing in my life...mmmm, spooky.

Cool song.

I know the German version "Mackie Messer" well, because the comedian Ernie Kovacs :eyebrows: used it alot in his tv show.

I'm not too fimiliar with the US number one song on the day I was born. "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong was a number one hit on the UK charts - now I'm dating myself
But most of the songs that were number one on my b-day before and after the year I was born are some of my all time favorites like

"How High The Moon" by Les Paul and Mary Ford
"Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" by Perez Prado
"Kansas City" by Wilbert Harrison
"Monday, Monday" by The Mama's and The Papa's
"Groovin" by The Young Rascals
"Aquarius/ Let The Sunshine In" by the 5th Demension
"Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes

(pursuing my mission to unearth old discussions)

The number one song on the Billboard chart on that beautiful day was "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" by The Fifth Dimension.

I love this song ! I wish I had know earlier it was my birth song.
merton - 29.06.2008, 06:54

Keep pursuing Emmanuelle :0)

The Fifth Dimension song is a fine song to be born on, references to astrology etc. Couldn't be more perfect.
Lammer - 29.06.2008, 07:19

Love Is Blue (Paul Mauriat, USA and Australia)
Mighty Quinn (Manfred Mann, UK)

I haven't heard of the first one, I don't think, but I do know Mighty Quinn.

HOWEVER, the day I turned TEN, the UK's Number One song was....
Take a Chance on Me :excited:

:)
Emmanuelle - 29.06.2008, 07:25

How cool is that. :-)
Lammer - 29.06.2008, 08:36

Oh, I was at that website again, and on my husband's 10th birthday Dancing Queen was #1 in Australia  .

We sure knew how to turn 10, huh?

:)
Emmanuelle - 29.06.2008, 08:39

Where did you find the UK and Australian billboard ? All I saw was the US billboard (which, obviously, isn't going to feature a whole lot of ABBA).
Lammer - 29.06.2008, 08:45

It was Merton's link on the first page (in his second post...):

http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/member/birthdayno1.php

Yes, as you said, only a few lucky Americans will share a bday with the one and only ABBA #1/USA: Dancing Queen... Hooray for the UK and Australia! :D
Emmanuelle - 29.06.2008, 08:55

Thank you !
Well my 10th birthday, while in the time of ABBA glory, was not bathed in their music but by Art Garfunkel's in the UK and Blondie in Australia. I'll happily settle for that.

But for my fifth birthday, tada ! Waterloo was #1 in the UK.
Finally I am vindicated.

Chris, my parents "first dance" song at their wedding in 1962 was O Sole Mio, because the Elvis song "It's Now or Never" has a similar melody, and my father was a huge Elvis fan.
