Most representive songs on each album
While listening to some different songs on different albums, I thought a thread like this could be intresting. Not sure if there already is one, but in that case, this one could be closed of course. My question is in fact, which song is the most representive for the album it is on now? Since we all now ABBA had her periods, I think all albums have a different sound in a way while being produced during a different time. I will be the first then!
1. Ring Ring / To be honest, I´ve never been very fond of this album, so my choice is not going to be a suprise I guess. It is Ring Ring.
2. Waterloo / Now we´re getting more into ABBA though. For the classic sound we all now, I think Waterloo itself would make a good song, but I think Honey Honey was more in the run comparing to their later albums.
3. ABBA / Now this is the real ABBA like we all know them. So Long for me, and of course Mamma Mia for me.
4. Arrivel / I still don´t get why the album was called like that. I think That´s Me and Fernando are good ones. Knowing Me Knowing Me doesn´t fit in a way I think.
5. The Album / The Name Of The Came. No comment.
6. Voulez Vous / If It Wasn´t For The Nights! I love that up tempo sound of them, and we can also hear it in Lover Live A Little Longer and Summer Night City. This album was in fact the only one which had typical songs like that, and IIWFTN is a very representive one I think.
7. Super Trouper / Lay All Your Love On Me. We´re now getting more into the serious business. Not as hard as TWTIA but still grown up people here. Me And I Is a good one too.
8. The Visitors / Now that´s a difficult one. I think I would pick Soldiers. It´s a mix of melancholic sounds and a beautiful voical parts, which is very much like The Visitors´ sound.

Good thread.
Let me have a go at this- I'll agree with your choices unless otherwise noted.......
Ring Ring
Waterloo
ABBA- SOS. Their big breakout; the one that announced them as more than a one-hit wonder after ESC 74.
Arrival- Dancing Queen. THE quintessential ABBA song, in my humble opinion, of course.
Album- Take A Chance On Me. If we were going with best song, I'd most likely agree. But "representative," to me, implies the song most associated with the album and/or its "sound" - which makes me lean towards TACOM.
Voulez Vous
Super Trouper- TWTIA. For the reason you gave- "grown up" ABBA; ABBF moving away from their old stuff.
Visitors
I may have to make changes to this as I think about it more.........
Again, good thread  -

Thansk for your reply! I'm glad you agreed with most of my choices! Dancing Queen was on my mind as well for a second, but on the other hand: it had a huge impact. None of the songs on Arrival was such disco-like in a way: they tried a lot of different sounds and it worked. That might be a reason for discussing that album. But I don't agree with TWTIA. It's an ABBA song on his own so to speak anyway. There was never a song such emotionally like that one, I think it doesn't represent anything at all. (that's why I like it: it's special)
I think we should get more into thread about the music itself by the way.

Ring Ring: He Is Your Brother
Björn & Benny sung much on this lovely album.
Waterloo: the titlesong
11 different songs, 11 different styles. Every song could be representative
ABBA: Mamma Mia
more and more typical ABBA sound
Arrival: Knowing Me Knowing You
finest pop in every song on the album
The Album: Thank You For The Music
the music theatre
Voulez-Vous: If It Wasn´t For The Nights
dance orientated album
Super Trouper: Our Last Summer
Classic pop album
The Visitors: Soldiers
the good dark sound album

Interesting topic DQ.
I would have to echo Matt's choices, those would probably be mine as well.
I would like to point out however that "Fernando" and "Summer Night City" were not released on any of the original albums, therefore cannot be representative of any of them. They were only added as "Bonus Tracks" on the 2001 remasters.
Bruce
Note: Fernando may have been on the Australian release of Arrival, but definitely not here in the US. (I bought the vinyl back in 78, I still have it. )

Ring Ring :- Me And Bobby And Bobby's Brother & Love Isn't Easy
Early Abba
Waterloo:- Waterloo and Honey Honey
Abba climbing on to the world stage
Abba:- SOS and Mamma Mia
We've arrived and no turning back
Arrival:- Dancing Queen and Knowing Me Knowing you
Two songs that represent good quality music, writing and vocals, found throughout this album
The Album:- Eagle and Take A Chance On Me
Abba just getting better and better
Voulez-Vous As Good As New & If It Wasn't For The Nights
Abba hit the disco period
Super Trouper The Winner Takes It All and Andante Andante
Abba moving away from pop and beginning to mature.
The Visitors The Visitors and I Let The Music Speak
Abba have mature completely and produced a very different album from all the others.
Bruce Fernando wasn't on Arrival here in the United Kingdom either. It was on Greatest Hits.

ABBAnator, you're so right. ;) But remember I wasn`t there when the albums were released for the first time. I only know them like they are now. But I some way, I think they might be representive though. Benny and Björn would never have added those 'bonus tracks' when they were not good enough. I would like to ask everyone to notice the songs on the albums like they are in the shops now!

I don't have to write down which one I would pick, because Nantes has already done it...

Interesting topic...
So we are not talking about favourite songs but the one or two songs we think are most representative for an album. Here we go:
Ring Ring:
Ring Ring and He's Your Brother: both songs represent what ABBA will become with the blended vocals and nice melodies.
Waterloo:
Waterloo and Honey Honey: both songs are easy on the ear and stick in your head.
ABBA:
Mamma Mia and SOS: strong melodies and singles showing ABBA had arrived.
Arrival:
Dancing Queen (duh) and Knowing Me Knowing You (lyrics getting better).
The Album:
The Name Of The Game and Eagle: more complex songs with smarter lyrics.
Voulez Vous:
Chiquitita: ABBA's breakthrough in Latin America.
Super Trouper:
The Winner Takes It All and Our Last Summer: wonderful well crafted songs showing a more mature ABBA.
The Visitors:
When All Is Said And Done and One Of Us: sad songs performed by serious and mature ABBA.

DancingQueen, I believe 'Arrival' was named thus because ABBA had, in a sense, 'arrived'. They were arguably at the peak of their talents and popularity and had honed their sound to perfection. And, as I'm sure you are aware, there was a song on the album called Dancing Queen, (your name sake) which was a MASSIVE hit all over the world so ABBA had indeed arrived as the best and most popular group in the cosmos during the 70's. Also, there is an instrumental song on the album called, 'Arrival'- something ABBA did a lot; think 'Super Trouper', 'Voulez Vous', etc..*
Also, on the album cover ABBA can clearly be seen to have 'arrived' via a helicopter so it really is quite apt.
I for one think 'Arrival' to be the best ABBA CD title; it is succint, apt and cool.

* I'm not saying these songs were instrumental, of course- simply that they share the albums title!*
