Local talk radio hates ABBA: My response
Was listening to the Phil Cowan Show today on Sacramento Talk 650am, and heard Phil talking(jokingly) about ABBA, and how he can't stand them. This was in reference to the new ABBA museum. After listening to his characterization of ABBA as a "chick's band", I felt compelled to send him a carefully worded e-mail stating that ABBA's music is classic, and bashing them makes about as much sense as bashing the Supremes. I must say Phil is a good sport though, and he did read my e-mail on the air. He also stated, however, that he WILL NOT stop bashing ABBA!

You bet! To each his own. Furthermore, I also love listening to the Coast-to-Coast AM show on AM 1530, where the host is Art Bell - a huge ABBA fan who regulary plays clips of S.O.S., Waterloo, Dancing Queen, and TACOM in between segments as his "bumper music". It was by listening to his show last year that got me interested in ABBA in the first place.

In ABBA´s active time we had many of those moderators who talked very bad and ridiculous about ABBA. Now only a few of these idiots :flush: are still around..... :puke:

I think it's cool that he aired your reply.

Well I suppose everyone can't be a fan. Actually I don't think anyone bashing ABBA on the radio will influence anyone that is to change their mind about them so it likely doesn't really matter. Although it can be somewhat upsetting to hear it.

I think most people listen to talk radio for current events and politics anyhow, not for musical advice. I listen to talk radio often and I used to live in Rocklin, CA. I think I might vaguely remember his show ... not sure. Anyhow, (as Johnny said) at least he was fair enough to read your reply on the air. 8)

The bumper music was always a treat. :D

Yes, Bruce and Johnny, not everyone can be an ABBA fan. But I think it is not necessary to make a group bad in the publicity. He can talk in his private live that he don´t like them, but I think it is not fair when he does it in the radio.

Those radiopeople have absolutely influence. When they say a group is bad, many people take over their opinion.

I think he is not very fair. Okay, he read Cronus´letter, but subsequently he talked bad about ABBA again and nobody had a chance to answer.

Many of you said it´s better to stay cool. You are absolutely right, but I must admit that those things still make me angry.....

What I can never understand is how a radio person can even think a group like ABBA is "bad" when their world wide sales and fan base would indicate anything but!!!!!

Each to their own person taste in music but to state publicly that a group like ABBA is "bad" makes me VERY angry as if just those groups or artists that presenter happens to like are "good" regardless of their worldwide appeal at the time.

I must try to be accurate here: Phil Cowan did not actually say ABBA was bad, only that he can't stand them. He went on to say that people's reactions to ABBA are like the movie Moulin Rouge; men hate them and women seem to love them. This is, of course, not entirely true, and that's why I sent him an email(using my first name, Carl) saying it makes no sense to bash ABBA, because they broke up 25 years ago.

Here is a link to the actual audio file for anyone who wants to hear it. Just scroll down until you get the The Phil Cowan Show 05/24/07 Hour 1.

I can see where that person is coming from on talk radio, the US radio stations as a whole do not give ABBA air time, I called an oldies station to play ABBA and they told me, "we have ABBA, but do not play them." May be this will change when the movie opens up here next summer.

Thanks for the link. I live near San Francisco, and I've listened to this show and other talk shows in the past. More recently when I'm in the car, I just listen to ABBA, It's much more relaxing than all the inane chatter. 8) I think talk shows are similar everywhere.

I don't think Phil's comments were that bad. This came during the warm-up period where the host intentionally makes controversial statements in order to attract callers. No callers, no show. He must have thought that ABBA would stimulate calls, and this is actually a recognition of their continuing popularity. :D I've often wonder if these hosts personally believe some of the things they say.

Phil picked up the announcement about the opening the ABBA museum and in an back handed way, he actually gave ABBA some publicity. He says: "If your an ABBA fan, you simply must go to Sweden". Good idea; lets go! :D

He also called ABBA a chick band, and after your e-mail, he compared them to the Spice Girls. I believe we all appreciate ABBA for their music, HOWEVER even on this forum, a significant number of the posts relate to the appearance of the girls (chicks  ). :wink1:

I didn't listen to the second hour, so I don't know if anyone called about ABBA.

I live in Manchester in the UK. In 1980, Piccadilly Radio -
a local Radio Station - played the Top 20 Singles of the Week
- as VOTED on by Listeners. (The Station is called Key 103, now).

Unfortunately, the DJ who played the Top 20 -
Mike Sweeney - 100% hated ABBA.

So, when, 'Super Trouper' was Voted in as a New Entry,
at 4, he refused to play it - and you heard him throw the
ABBA Single at the wall - smashing it.
'I'm not playing that rubbish!', he said!!!!

The next Week, it rose to Number 2 in their
Top 20, & he said that he was still NOT going to play
it because:, 'I don't happen to like the group'.

He admitted that he had had many, many complaints
off ABBA Fans, about him refusing to play 'Super Trouper'.

The next Week it rose from 2 to 1 in their Top 20
- knocking, 'The Tide Is High', by Blondie, down to Number 2.

He counted down the Top 20 - playing every Track -
- until he got to Number 1 - ABBA. Then he smashed
their Single - against the wall, & simply played
The Blondie Hit a 2nd time!

I had sent him a very angry letter, about his behaviour,
& ALL he could do - On Air - was to say things like:,

"In his letter, Colin says a lot of things about how great ABBA are,
but I notice that he says nothing about the strupid clothes
that they wear!"

THAT was because I saw no need - at all - to mention
ABBA's clothes - I was complaining about HIM not playing
their Hit, & smashing their Single each Week! HIS job
was to play the Top 20 - not to refuse to play
any ABBA Singles in it, just because he did not like them!

On another Piccadilly Radio Show, he had a, 'Crap Singles'
Slot, & he got people to send in Singles, that were 'crap'
(rubbish, garbage, no good), - so he could smash them up,
on the Radio. I recall how delighted he was, when someone
sent him, 'Dancing Queen', & how childish he sounded.
as he smashed it to bits!

What a MORON!!!!!

I think that he works on the Radio Station, Capital Gold,
in London, now. It is - obviously - a Station that plays,
'Golden Oldies'. - I doubt if he plays any ABBA on his show!
He's a bigoted, narrow minded prat, about ABBA!!!!

So the guy said this in 1980? Let's have a look at a contemporary photo from 1978 to see how "stupid" they were:

Well, the adjectives that come to mind are; stylish, classy, good taste, gorgeous, but no, stupid doesn't come to my mind from their clothes. It does however come to mind from his comments.

I think it's important for ABBA not to be universally liked or adored as there should be a balance to these things and we don't want everyone to hijack our fave band, do we? :)

Excluding morons, I think it's fine if someone doesn't like ABBA because of personal taste but I think only an idiot or someone attempting to be be provocative would deny their talent or impact in popular music. Of course it is always great to make new 'converts'- some people do need a little illumination, after all!

The other thing is the more you react to prats like this the more they continue to wind you up so whilst I think it's important to address some of the more ridiculous comments it's best to ignore them in the main for the pathetic swipes they are. The facts speak for themselves and I wouldn't worry about people being influenced as anyone who has a brain would quickly smell the b.s. and hopefully make their own mind up and if they ARE influenced in the negative, well, then who would want such a weak willed wimp as a fan anyway?

I actually even have some kind of sympathy for the dj.

[short break to give you time to find the buttons for   ]

Well, from today's point of view at least. Today you get the pre-programmed playlists on the radio and almost all of the real, individual pop programmes with dj's showing some personal input are gone (at least in Germany). It would be quite refreshing to have some of these people on air again.

Re: Local talk radio hates ABBA: My response

Toni - 10.06.2007, 08:48

Joachim, I don´t have any sympathies for that guy. He is the biggest a. .hole I have ever heard of.

With the radio moderators you are right. I would prefer the good old radio, too. The programme was made by the moderators, and to every songs they said something interesting. Music was the main thing.
Today´s radio is nothing but boring. Yes, it would be great, to bring the old moderators back. (But please not the ones who hated ABBA :!: )

--old topic alive again--

God, what **************** these DJs are! There are two radio stations in my town that usually plays ABBA, Diário and Melody, and two in São Paulo, Antena 1 and Eldorado. I don't listen to other stations, it's better listen compliments to ABBA art than mostly of new music...

Re: Local talk radio hates ABBA: My response

Josie - 20.08.2012, 21:50

As it was already pointed out here, to each their own and you can't expect everyone to be a fan. Then again, a DJ on the radio has to be decent, consider that he might serve as a role model.
How stupid - refusing to play a groups' songs on the radio because of their costumes!
