The Magic Of ABBA
Dear ABBA fans,
in their active time, when they had appearances on TV shows, it was a real fantastic feeling to watch them.
What do you think were the main reasons for that "magic" in the air, when they were around?

For me it was the excitement of seeing ABBA preforming in The Studio, or Television Shows which they appeared.
The big factor of course was the sound The Magic blend of those voices together and The brilliant songs.
Especially in the earlier years when they were so happy together on stage or a show.
They themselves were excited about it to, but as we all know As the years progressed they did not enjoy it so much.
Also in the early years seeing what costumes they wore as well.

Thanx, Maxi!
Yes, everytime they were on TV it was an exciting feeling. Everybody talked about it next day. Even it was great to me before I was an ABBA fan.
Some reasons I think were:
- ABBA was the biggest act in pop-biz in their active time.
- to see those girls was absolutely amazing, one blonde and one darkhaired
- many of us kids sung their songs, and then ABBA was in TV with those hits- MAGIC!

I can only echo Johnny's words. I can't actually explain it- a combination of THAT voice (and the spliced voices of A and F and all four) and those looks and the magical ingredients of the other three made for an intense experience. I have to say, I even get a tingle when I see the word 'ABBA' written in the press; a sort of memory-hangover thing from when they were active as a group and I would get so excited like a kid in a sweet shop (well, I WAS actually a kid in a sweet shop!) at the prospect of a new single or even something like 'ABBA In Switzerland' on the devil's window (i.e the TV).
Only rarely does someone else's music or image give me the same thrill. Although there are exceptions, nothing gives me quite the same 'buzz'.

For me personally, it was one reason too :D - the sound of her voice, her looks and her stage performance. However, the question is more complex than that!
The music of course and those voices that blend into the fabulous third voice. The thrill waiting to hear the new song and see a new cover on a single or album. Sweet expectations! 8)
I also think that the visual appearance of the two stunning girls, one blonde and one red-haired, is also a large part of the ABBA magic.
There was a certain tension among all 4 of them (in a very positive way) that I just can't explain.

Couldn't have said it better than you all did already!

Two beautiful ladies on stage and the fact they were contrastng red and blonde haired was an element to be sure. In the early and mid career most of the songs were upbeat and happy which was a positive and exciting element. Frida and Agnetha's performances were part of the fascination. I think another element that was part of the magic without probably being realized was the fact that they were two couples, giving them a certain impression of being a "family". They also gave the impression of being regular folk. There wasn't alot of pretense with ABBA which gave them a certain charm. Being American, the fact that they were Swedish also added a bit of exotica to them which was intriguing.
I think all these elements combined gave them a certain magic that I really can't compare with another group. I can't think of another group that had all of these elements, a few here and there but not all. This is the fascination and uniqueness of ABBA I think.
Of course the combined voices of F&A was a factor also but that's a given.
Bruce
Note: For me personally, at least when I was a kid, my attraction to Agnetha had a certain "hormonal magic" as well.

My ABBA fandom got a big boost when I first saw them on TV. It was in 1979,
and I was most impressed with the way Agnetha could gaze into the camera.
I like all members of ABBA, I like many Frida songs and Frida sings to the
camera as well, but Agnetha seems to open her soul. Still, I wouldn't trade
Frida for a second Agnetha type.
Doug
...maybe twin Agnethas...mmmmmm, oh yeah :agnetha::agnetha:

Yes Ivana, that feeling was so amazing!
Johnny, Joe, Bruce & Doug, it must have been even more magic to be an ABBA fan when you´re in love with one member, in your case, with Agnetha!
Joachim, Johnsteven, Maxi-saxi & Elisabeth, I agree with you!
Thank you for all your very nice answers.

I think it was their happy-go-lucky image and their brilliant multi layered harmony vocals that dragged me through my lonely teen years. Abba was an escape into another world. Abba and their success were a fairy tale and by playing their music and following their career I became a small part of that fairy tale. I loved their albums, not especially the hits. I wasn't especially attracted to one of the members, nor did I prefer one solo voice to another.
Still love them and the magic of their music and image. At the time, I'm (re)collecting their unremastered cd's.

I know what you mean, It's very nice to look back on the early TV Shows and DVD's to see ABBA on stage looking so happy together and really enjoying what they did.
As I said earlier I think as the years progressed The members did not find Touring all that fun, and lets face it would you like to be locked up in a hotel Room City after City not being able to go out and sight see.
