Frida a beauty or a beautiful singer?
Frida was as member from abba, like agnetha, a singer and also an image; when i listened abba for the first time, i didn't know if she was beautiful or not as a woman. After that, i saw her in tv and on the album's covers and found it so sexy and beautiful.
Last week, i met 2 swedish women: the mother and her daughter: she spoke about abba: great music, international success good for sweden and about frida or agnetha, just about their beauty, not their voice or their talent. The mother was fan from Frida's beauty, her daughter for Agnetha (i promise you it's right but funny).
Do you think that Frida or Agnetha are just considered (except by the fans) as 2 beautiful ladies, just like that?
Is it the reason they didn't have great solo's success?
Pierre

People know me as an ABBA fan. Sometimes I talk about ABBA with others. They all call both Frida and Agnetha as beautiful Ladies and they agree, that both have excellent voices. Some prefer Anni-Frid, others Agnetha.
I don´t think that it´s a hindrance for a singer to look good. Their solo success was not as big as ABBA´s but they had many solohits in Sweden. "Something´s Going On" was a world hit. Of course it´s sad that some good material of the Ladies didn´t chart, but that has other reasons. (bad promotion, very young CD buyers, Hip Hop trends and so on).
Many good looking ladies have success in the charts now: Nelly Furtado, Beyonce, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and so on. They are beautiful and that sells very well. Yes it´s a pity that it didn´t work so well with Agnetha and Frida.

Hi Pierre,
I think you'll find that most people with a brain and awareness of vocal ability realise these days how good a singer Frida was/is and also the consensus is that both ABBA women are very physically attractive, too in their own right.
Regards,
Joe

Frida is both a beauty and a beautiful singer. 8) So is Agnetha.
When I first heard Gonna sing you my lovesong, I instinctively knew Frida was singing it. It was quite different than Hasta Manana, for example, a song I loved too. (I was 12 btw). Then I saw her on covers and pictures and I absolutely liked everything about her. :) (that much Pierre about seeing her for the first time)
But I am pretty sure there are people out there who aren't fans of the girls' music but just their looks. They aren't even ABBA fans! Oh, well. I'd call them "ABBA-amused"!
The reason why they didn't have more successful solo careers is probably they were not exactly in their 20s after all of them went their separate ways. They weren't that trendy any more too and I doubt they were in the mood for wild dancing as well! :D
But Something's going on was a huge success. I was so surprised to learn SGO charted quite high in the United States! So cool.

Frida made important contributions to ABBA with her voice and her beauty. I believe the record buying public, who carried ABBA to the top, were primarily moved by the music and the aura surrounding the group and not by one member's appearance. Frida was a major part of that aura. Those who lusted after Frida and/or Agnetha (Aggie is off topic here) talked a lot, but never put their money where their mouth was.
A female performer has to be tremendously talented to find success without raging beauty, although Barbara Streisand is one example. Serious people see beauty in talent regardless of what the eyes disclose. My second favorite singer, Shania Twain, is well endowed with both. :D
My reflection on beauty vs talent may be from a male perspective, but appreciation of talent is genderless. I've heard rumors that some females lusted after Björn, but I doubt this drove them to buy ABBA records. 8)
To tread on more controversial ground, I'll suggest that Agnetha's solo career was limited by her personal attitudes toward travel, the press, motherhood, publicity and exploitation. Frida's solo career was limited by album sales.

Perhaps the general public perceives them only as beauties but that's because they (the public) have never bothered to actually listen to ABBA music (as opposed to absent-mindedly hearing on the radio) or A's and F's solo efforts.
To me, Frida's voice matters more than her looks - I would have loved her even if she had looked like a troll. I have to say, however, that when I first saw her in videos (having previously discovered ABBA's music through audio only), it was what I saw that drew me to her, not what I heard - since at the time, I was unable to distinguish her voice from Agnetha's. But it wasn't just her looks. There is something about her - her demeanor, how fun and bubbly and sexy she looks. yet with an emotion in her eyes ... I could sense that and that's what made her very special to me.

Both.
But I think her crucial weapon to capture hearts is the voice. I mean, most of the time we listen instead of stare, don't we?
Not that it's not nice to occasionally look at her while listening. (God, those LEGS!)
:rotfl:
But I doubt that her impact would be the same if she only was a model looking sexy.

I think that was not what Pierre meant, Maxi.
Anyway, it is a fact that usually people find beautiful women and men nicer, friendlier and more realiable than less prettier ones. ( only at first sight of course, I mean a beautiful woman can turn a out to be a b****)
I think Benny and Björn made the right choice with their respective girlfriends: they could sing and they were attractive. It made their breakthrough so much easier.
Frida was always looked upon as an elegant and beaautiful woman so that was very much in her advantage. When you read old reviews from the 60s and the 70s ( and later on too BTW) you will find that she was not only praised for her distincive, warm and sultry voice but also for her looks.
We rather look at a young Anni-Frid
than at a young Kelly Osbourne

I think we're all agreed that Frida has it all 'going on' ( )- she has the whole package and that is a winner in my book when you think of some of the mingers in the charts these days. Luckily for us we had the wondrous voice AND the aesthetic so what a bonus!

frida as a beauty
I never want in this topic compare Frida and Agnetha: both are beautiful ladies.
About Frida, this day i see the movie from François Truffaut (frenh "nouvelle vague", named "la nuit américaine" with Jacqueline Bisset and this actress seems like Frida in the seventies. Very beautiful.
About Kelly Osbourne, Barbra Streisand etc..., i think that their success are so great because, like Streisand, she has a majestic voice but also because she has this kind of physical, a little strange perhaps, but which gives her such personnality.

I'm sorry guys, I should not have posted the Kelly picture. It was just to make my point clear.
On the other hand if I had uploaded this :
I'm sure people would have said that that woman probably has a heart of gold and a great sense of humour!
There is ofcourse no comparison, everybody is unique ( where have I heard that one before? ) and Frida is one of a kind. And she's very very lucky to be blessed with a great physique and a wonderful voice.

Hi Pierre
I think Frida has all these attributes aswel as being gifted with a fantastic voice and being a very beutiful elagant lady Frida has a good fun natured careing personality this is given Frida the whole package,The same can be said for Agnetha,There are many reasons why Frida and Agnetha did not recieve the massive solo success that they deserved the main factor/reasons for me personaly is i think that the general puplic wanted ABBA as a group not as individual solo singers there was also the lack off or little touring/promotion this may have been the main factors though im not 100% sure!
