Yeehah! ABBA go wild in the Country!
Been listening to the old stuff (again) and in particular 'Burning My Bridges', which I kind of like- it has a happy tempo and sometimes I find it refreshing to hear Bjorn sing. The only other time I can recall ABBA 'doing' a country song was the 'B' side medley of 'Summer Night City', which I really enjoyed at the time, even though I've heard fans and critics alike slate it since. I found it enjoyable; I liked the frenetic pace of 'Midnight Special' and Frida's dulcet tones in 'On Top Of Old Smokey'. Likewise, although it has comedy value I also like ABBA doing 'California (here I come)'- Agnetha's warbling has me in stitches! LOL.
My question is this: How successful do you think ABBA were at tackling this genre? OK, pop was their forte, but IMO they didn't do a bad job at all. Giddy up!
Responses, Cowboys/gals?

Well, i have always thought that the intro to Burning My Bridges is brilliant, and i really like the song, imagine them decked out in cowboy hats and spurs singing that one, I suppose it was an experiment of some sort, and is definately not a typical abba song, but i wish they had done a full version of it.

Wow, this is kind of a double-edged sword question. The style of country music in the '70s was so vastly different from the '90s and today. I'd like to have seen ABBA try something country, in the post-80s' style, not the guitar-twang '70s style. Now I bet that would have ROCKED (can I say "rock" about "country"?) given their musical genius and development inthe later years!

Burning My Bridges is a great tune and I think Björn's voice fits such a genre so much better than a disco-like song as Does Your Mother Know.
Benny and Björn did a lot of Swedish folk before ABBA, in a way Swedish country. Would be nice if they had practised such a kind of music during ABBA.

I love this song. Amazing lyric and a good vocal by Bjorn, I think it was a shame ABBA never finished this Recording, If they did though. I bet It would have been one or both of the Girls on lead vocal.
But It does
sound so Country like. I have always imagined Bjorn in A Cowboy hat and Benny the same.

Burning My Bridges somehow reminds me of Träskofolket, which is also a great song.

Yes I like country sound. All the songs mention here are great:
"Burning My Bridges" is one of my favorites of "Undeleted". I´ve always loved "Medley" and "Träskofolked" is a song that I love, it´s one of Björn & Benny´s best compositions, not popmusic, but a very enjoyable country song.

Yes have to agree with you Joe, liked the medley on the back of Summer Night City alot. I think they pulled it off Ok. Not sure if they would have been a great success with country music.
