"I Saw It In The Mirror": Is The Worst ABBA song?
I myself think it's awful. What do you think of the song?

It isn't one of my favorites, but it isn't the worst ABBA song. Man In The Middle is probably the worst ABBA song.

I would never call any ABBA song awful. I love them all, some more than others off course. This song would be near the bottom of the list. When I first got the Ring Ring CD I couldn't believe this was ABBA. It sounded nothing like the ABBA I love and knew. But the whole album has grown on me over the years. Remember they were developing the ABBA sound back then. Keep listening, you will get to like it.

Like every artist, ABBA surely made some pretty awful songs and yes, I Saw It In The Mirror is probably the worst. Closely followed by Man In The Middle.

I agree with Anthony & Gary. None of the ABBA songs is bad.
"I Saw It In The Mirror": I like it! I´ts not the "worst" ABBA track.
In Germany, in the 70´s the "Ring Ring"-Album was released with the name "Honey Honey", but "I Saw It In The Mirror" wasn´t on it. Instead of it we could hear the title track.
I didn´t knew that there was a song missing, but in 1990, in the record store, I saw a double album "The Collection Volume 2". I was totally surprised that there was a song called "I Saw It In The Mirror" on it.
Of course I bought that double LP. When I heard the song at home, I felt very happy, because of the very nice melody. I liked the song very much. After many years it was a "new" ABBA song to me.
I can´t understand that almost every fan don´t like it, but tastes are different.
Toni :wink1:
PS "Man In The Middle" isn´t the worst ABBA song, too. I like the funky arrangement and the good lyrics. 8)

That would be a very personal choice I guess. But the fact that some song was made by ABBA doesn't mean it's a good one. Indeed, they were creating the sounds we know now by that time, but that doesn't mean every single song they made was a good one because it was released by ABBA, at least not for me.

If not the worst then pretty close to it. :-) But no problem, to me this is rather a B&B song anyway.

I Saw It In The Mirror is not among my top 20 but I sort of like Bjorn's melancholy voice. The only thing that bothers me is "when this BOY cries". It would have been better imo "when this man cries" - it would sound more mature in a way.

I wouldn't call any ABBA song a worst or Bad song, This was rushed into the Ring ring Album to complete the finishing of it. I think some of the songs were meant to be on a Bjorn And Benny Recording. You can tell some of these were written very early.
I kinda like it.

It is dreadful in parts but I can usually find something in an ABBA song that I like. Man In The Middle is kind of rubbish, too but because it's ABBA I will endeavour to find something in it of worth. Remember, ABBA were evolving and therefore some of their earlier songs, whilst weak, were still ABBA so they have intrinsic value to me still simply because it was those four together- that old chestnut about singing the telephone directory again!

I find it hard to compare the songs on Ring Ring to the other songs actually release under the guise of ABBA as they were at the time BBA and F (which I know is the same thing) but it somehow has different connotations (correct spelling? never typed it before!) for me. ABBA for me is the Waterloo album onwards - Ring Ring was an experiment as they were finding their feet and sometimes it worked but sometimes it didn't.
I know some tracks were rushed so they could meet the release date but on the whole, it's not a great album so ISIITM does sound a bit naff but perhaps that's only because they developed so quickly song-writing wise, it doesn't stand up to being compared to their subsequent material - I don't know.
Not one of my faves but everyone is different - I can't believe that some people have chosen Move On as their least favourite track from The Album - one of my top 5! I'm really not a fan of Disillusion so will now probably be banned from this site!

I saw it in the mirror is not a masterpiece, that's obvious, and I would never include it in a list of my favourite songs, but it's not as bad as some people say. Songs like King Kong song or Santa Rosa are worse.

I don't think "King Kong song" is a bad song, I think you are right, it's kind of funny, I never skip it when I listen to the Waterloo album. I have just said that, in my opinion, it's worse than "I saw it in the mirror". Anyway, neither of them are among my favourites.

I Saw it in the Mirror is definitely not a fan favorite, but obviously some people like it. (I don't have any documentation, but I seem to recall reading a survey that did place it dead last among ABBA fans. I could be wrong. That's just a vague memory.)
It's not one of my personal favorites, but I have to say that the girls' voices are delicate and beautiful on the bridge. The bridge itself is pretty nice for that matter.
Most of the other candidates for worst song mentioned in this thread have also cropped up in similar threads. No surprises there except for one person who mentioned Move On.
Really? Move On? I think it's one of ABBA's most beautiful songs, although I like the Spanish version better. Agnetha just sings the first verse beautifully instead of Björn speaking it in that weird pastiche of an American accent.
I like most ABBA songs, some more than others of course, but please don't come down too hard on our fellow fans who dislike some songs. After all, the former ABBA members have declared various ABBA songs to be awful and even embarrassing, even the former ABBA members who wrote and produced those songs!

Daniel, I agree with you about the bridge in I Saw It In The Mirror- it is quite sweet.
Regarding Move On. I think it really is one of the most delicious of ABBA songs and it grows on me year by year. The only thing I DON'T like about it is, as you so aptly say, Bjorn's bizarre American pastiche spoken intro- kind of cringeworthy to say the least and yet it doesn't ruin a fine song, thank the baby Jesus!

it's a shame you don't like disillusion because its in my top 3 :!: :D also Disillusion is under produced I know but rember that when this song was recorded Linda was only about two weeks old (I read that somewhere I can't remember where though) I read also that during that session her legs felt like jelly so, I don't think Agnetha was really in the mood to put her best effort into the song.

Best, worst, favorite, good and bad, these are all relative and personal terms to the individual.
Somewhere out there in the world is an Abba fan who doesn't like Dancing Queen or the Winner Takes It All......

Well, like others I also place this at the bottom of the list - though not quite rock bottom, because for me, that spot belongs to "I am Just a Girl". Some of my less favorite songs mentioned have some redeeming qualities - "King Kong Song", for example is very silly, but kind of fun. I dislike the album version of "I'm a Marionette" but the live version in "The Movie" is fabulous. Nothing, however is salvageable with "I am Just a Girl" - it is simply cringe inducing from the awful lyrics to the cutesy (I think that's what they were going for anyway) singing style. Just dreadful, in my opinion.
Of course, as has been pointed out - this is a very subjective subject. As for "Move On" - that's No. 3 on my list of favorites so I too am a bit surprised to find it mentioned here. But to get back on topic - "I Saw it in the Mirror" - I agree it is one of the worst (a very short list, but a list that exists, nonetheless).

Hello MMM,
with the two versions of "I´m A Marionette" I fully agree with you
BUT
:wrath: :axe:  :fight: :jedi:
"I Am Just A Girl" is one of my absolutely favorite songs! It´s full of romance, love and emotion! The melody is wonderful and the voices of ABBA suit very well. I loooooooooooooooove it!
But it´s always funny to talk about the different tastes from ABBA fans. :D

I think King Kong song is the worst one of all - yes, it could've been fun but Bjorn's singing is so terrible it just ruins it.
