    A Dream Within A Dream
    Hi all,

What is the poem "A Dream Within A Dream" about? Is painting with words or is there a deeper meaning behind it?
I'm looking forward to your replies!

    Robin

I think there is the language side and the meaning side.
The language side is for sure (as almost always) a joggling with words.
    The meaning side...hmm.
There are many ways one could interpret that.

It´s for sure about someone who is leaving the current place now and looks back on his life, wich has been a hopeless search for the sense of itself.
The few hopes which are still there "creep" through his hand down into the eternal edge of Death/Depression.
And it all ends into the desperate question if really everything, everything in life is a dream within a dream?

And here, my friends, the answer is blown´ in the wind.

    A Dream Within A Dream
I asked myself many times what this mysterious lines mean. If he had written "All that we see or seem is but a dream", he could have meant that reality is an illusion. But by adding "within a dream", he takes it all a step further. He puzzles the reader; who knows what a dream within a dream looks like? I think that he meant that reality is not an illusion, but something beyond illusion: a hallucination.

Maybe "a dream within a dream" just went better with the rhyme

    A Dream within a Dream
Yes, that is also an explanation, probably the most obvious.

But can I point on a similarity between those lines and a part of a story: "Ligeia". He writes " I saw that there lay on the golden carpet, in the very middle of the rich lustre thrown from the censer, a shadow, a faint, indifinite shadow of angelic aspect, such as might be fancied for the shadow of a shade. But I was wild with the excitement of an immoderate dose of opium, and heeded these theings but little, nor spoke of them to Rowena."

So here he uses the same technique to paint a world of hallucinations.

Ligeia is also one of the very few stories where he admits taking opium.

Oo, Hunn, be careful, "he" - that´s just the teller of the story, right? He doesn´t say "I, Edgar Allan Poe, admit to take opium", does he? I mean, I really don´t mean to be rude but if we took everything that Eddy wrote in the "I"-Perspective for true, he has his wife and his enemy in his cellar (well-hidden, as we all know), he has torn his cat´s eye out, he has stood with Tobi Dammit on the Devil´s Bridge...
Ah I love Edgar, but one mustn´t take him too seriously, at least not take everything he wrote in the "I"-form for real.
You might say that I just don´t want anyone to think that he took opium, and you´d be right. I mean, he for sure took opium sometimes - otherwise he wouldn´t have tried to commit suicide with Laudanum - but no, I do not think he was addicted. Neither to opium nor to alcohol.
Noone knows - but I believe Eddy, I always do. Maybe what he said in his letters is not true - that he did never really drink much - but I would believe him everything.

But the lines "a shadow of a shadow", I agree, there is a resemblance with "a dream within a dream", for sure. And it sounds good, doesn´t it? Another paralel can be found in the poem "Spirits of The Death", the very last line:
    A Mystery of Mysteries.

Actually a kind of summary for everything in this universe.

I did not mean to say that he was addicted to opium, but the mentioning of it in some stories indicates that he knew about the effects of this drug. That is not surprisingly, because I read that Laudanum was used as a medicine also. In my opinion he was not an alcoholic, but very sensitive to drink.

Ah well yes that he knew all about opium, about that I have no doubt ... well, has there ever been anything our Eddy did not know about?

Yeah Laudanum was a medicine - or at least it was held to be a medicine until people finally discovered that 90% alcohol and 10% opium might be not that healthy...
