Travel Led Zeppelin's stairway to theme-park heaven

    By Gene Sloan, USA TODAY
First Aerosmith gets its own theme-park ride. Now Led Zeppelin. The creators of the Hard Rock theme park, under construction in Myrtle Beach, S.C., will announce details today of the park's signature ride: a 150-foot-tall steel roller coaster with a Led Zeppelin theme. The looping attraction is one of more than 40 rock 'n' roll-themed amusements planned for the 140-acre theme park. It's scheduled to open in spring 2008.

The park, built by private investors under license from Hard Rock International, which operates 123 Hard Rock Cafes and eight Hard Rock Hotels, is the first major new park planned for the USA in nearly a decade. As on the Aerosmith coaster, which made its debut in 1999 at the Disney-MGM Studios park near Orlando, riders on Zeppelin will experience a musical immersion from speakers.

"Led Zeppelin are the icons of hard-rock music," says the park's CEO, Steven Goodwin. "Parents and kids alike can relate to the band's music."

Report: LED ZEPPELIN Members Picked Song For Hard Rock Park Roller Coaster

According to Dawn Bryant of The Sun News, LED ZEPPELIN members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones picked the song and worked on the development of a roller coaster synchronized to the band's 1969 song "Whole Lotta Love", which will be the signature ride at the Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Riders, inside a zeppelin, will watch footage of the band performing, then go on the 90-second ride. The coaster goes upside down six times, with peaks and turns planned to match moments in the song.

The coaster, one of three planned for the park, will run alongside George Bishop Parkway.

Led Zeppelin plans to take Myrtle Beach for a loop.

A roller coaster synchronized to the band's 1969 song "Whole Lotta Love" will be the signature ride at the Hard Rock Park, spiraling 4,000 feet over a lagoon and reaching a height of 155 feet. Park officials announced the ride Friday. No one from the band was there.

Riders, inside a zeppelin, will watch footage of the band performing, then go on the 90-second ride. The coaster goes upside down six times, with peaks and turns planned to match moments in the song.

The coaster, one of three planned for the park, will run alongside George Bishop Parkway.

Band members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones picked the song and worked on the ride's development, said Steven Goodwin, the park's CEO. Led Zeppelin, still popular decades after its heyday in the `70s with hits such as "Stairway to Heaven," "All My Love," and "D'yer Mak'er," connects with music fans of all ages, he said.

A 15-foot statue of "The Hermit," a cloaked man carrying a lit lantern that was featured on the band's "Led Zeppelin IV" album, already has a place at the park, unveiled Friday near the park's office off George Bishop Parkway.

"It's the most iconic rock band of all time, and they appeal to multiple generations," Goodwin said. "It's one of those things that unites the whole family."

The $400 million park is under construction and scheduled to open in spring 2008. A preview center, dubbed "Backstage Tour," debuts Wednesday and will give a glimpse of what the park will look like. A concert featuring Sister Hazel, the Marshall Tucker Band and a Led Zeppelin tribute band is scheduled for that night.

The 140-acre park will include six music-themed zones, three roller coasters, a Jamaican- themed water play area, a 10,000-seat amphitheater, restaurants and a live comedy show featuring acrobatics and pyrotechnics.

Jimmy scheint auf jeden Fall keine Angst vor der Achterbahn zu haben

Zitat: Officials released details of the Led Zeppelin roller coaster Friday in Myrtle Beach. No one from the band attended the announcement, though band members are likely to make an appearance in Myrtle Beach once the park opens, said Steven Goodwin, the park's chief executive officer.

A representative for the band in London, Robert Rosenberg of Trinifold Management Ltd., could not be reached for comment Friday.

"Jimmy Page, who has been leading the creative input from the band, has already expressed an interest in coming out and riding the ride, so I am sure people will get to see them when we open the park," Goodwin said.

Led Zeppelin Builds a "Stairway" in Rock & Roll Heaven

Led Zeppelin : The RideMyrtle Beach, SC/July 13, 2007/FPSnewswire/-- Exactly one year after breaking ground on the world's first rock 'n' roll theme park, Hard Rock Park celebrates another milestone today, with the official topping ceremony for the Park's most anticipated attraction, Led Zeppelin - The Ride. The topping ceremony, which marks the completion of the highest lift hill for the signature roller coaster, kicks the Park into "construction overdrive."

"This coaster is so high; I'm sure we're waking up a few pilots," jokes Steven Goodwin, Hard Rock Park CEO. "I swear I've seen a couple of planes take notice already, not to mention the drivers on Rt. 501. We're at the point of development where everyone will be amazed with what will spring up next."

Easily viewed as far away as the three highway bridges that surround the Park, Led Zeppelin - The Ride will tower more than 150 feet into the sky (15 stories tall), serving as a landmark that will help travelers pinpoint Hard Rock Park whether arriving by air or land. The ride is most notable for the iconic relationship with band members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, who have contributed to all aspects of Led Zeppelin - The Ride, including the ride's name, logo and overall look and feel of the vehicles.

Led Zeppelin : The Ride - Scale model"A lot of planning and communication with the FAA has gone into this project," said David Reitterer, project manager for Hard Rock Park. "We are building this coaster just as high as they would allow, given the Park's proximity to Myrtle Beach International Airport."

Located in the Park's Rock & Roll Heaven zone, the signature steel roller coaster will thrill riders with a six and a half minute experience, partially over water. Reaching speeds of 65 mph, the coaster will boast six breathtaking inversions, the largest of which will be a 120-foot loop. Every moment of the ride, including thrilling drops and loops, is timed to Led Zeppelin's hit single "Whole Lotta Love," creating an unprecedented sensory experience and an adrenaline rush rivaled only by a live Led Zeppelin concert.

The experience will begin in a huge silver airship, which is designed to make guests feel as if they are stepping onto the cover of Led Zeppelin's debut album. Once inside, band-related murals and props will adorn the walls, while music and videos play throughout the queue, leading to a "studio" area where guests will be treated to a moving, multimedia show before climbing aboard the coaster. As the ride begins its initial ascent, excitement will build in time with "Whole Lotta Love," which is pumped into each car, thanks to a high-fidelity on-board audio system.

This summer, visitors to Myrtle Beach can get a sneak peek of Led Zeppelin - The Ride, as well as many more rides and attractions at the Hard Rock Park Backstage Tour, the Park's official preview center. The Backstage Tour is open daily to the public, free of charge, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Hard Rock Park will be an approximately 140-acre theme park boasting more than 40 attractions for rockers of all ages, including roller coasters, shows, children's play areas, restaurants, cafes and retail stores, a multi-purpose live music amphitheatre, and ultra-modern sound system specifically developed for the project, creating a totally immersive full-day experience.
