Your Favourite non-ABBA music!
hi everybody!
i was wondering, to which music do you listen exept from ABBA and the solo stuff?

Here would be my top-five non-ABBA music:

1.Juli (which is a german pop band, the germans probably know them, and i really really love them)
2.Robbie Williams (the earlier stuff)
3.Beatles
4.Simon&Garfunkle
5.Queen

What about you?
DancingQueen - 11.04.2007, 15:17

Rock, some stuff from the '80s and soundtracks. For example: Guns N' Roses, Depeche Mode, The Cure and the soundtrack taken from Grease. (others as well of course) I use to listen to some popsongs (except ABBA) as well, but there's no kind of artist I really like or worship nowadays. Just some popsongs from the radio every now and then. But most of times old stuff. (including The Beatles)
Joe - 11.04.2007, 18:16

Some I like to listen to from time to time (no order and only singers/groups with more than 2 albums in my collection):

Tina Turner
The Corrs
Supertramp
Herbert Grönemeyer
(German singer and formerly also an actor, see "The Boat/Das Boot")
Rolling Stones
Elton John
Chris Rea
Bruce Springsteen (until 80's)

I also like Jazz (e.g. Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis)
and some classics, especially Mendelssohn, Tchaikowsky, Mahler.

Joachim
Toni - 11.04.2007, 18:18

Mostly I hear pop music. My favorites are: ABBA + solo, NENA the group + solo, Die Prinzen, The Kelly Family, Roxette, The Beatles, The Ten Tenors and many more.

I also like some rockmusic, for example Zeltinger Band, Klaus Lage, Udo Lindenberg, Bap and others.

Schlager is something that i like, too: King Size Dick, Nicki, Reneé & Renato, Francoice Hardy, Truck Stop and so on.

Sometimes I even hear classic music. Some of the tracks are not that bad.

I listen to a lot of different music, old and new. Right now, I'm actually quite curious about a German pop / rock group, that seems to be very popular in Germany : Tokio Hotel. I see there's two Germans on this topic, and was hoping you could tell me your opinion of that group? They're very young, but I get the impression that they're very talented..? Unfortunately their alums are not sold here in Norway.

Geir :)

Cliff Richard

Mines either. Tokio Hotel gots a lot of young fans, so I won't say it wasn't a suprise to read some older member here liked them actually. People use to think I listen to that stuff because I appreciate rock in a lot of ways, but to be honest: I think there worthless. Don't like their image, and their music isn't my kind of thing too.

But that's just my opinion.
NinaPrettyBallerina - 13.04.2007, 16:30

You won't like to hear my opionion on Tokio Hotel aswell...
Although there music might be quite good, it's the way they present themselves...they try to be so cool, while all they really do is making a fool out of themselves...for example their leadsinger, Bill, is always so much made up, he looks like someone out of a manga and you hardly know if he's a boy or a girl (strange that all the little girls love him...).
however here in germany they're really big at the moment and all the kids are crazy about them...however noone would really admit it...somehow it's very uncool to be a Tokio Hotel fan, but there must be fans, otherwise they wouldn't sell so many records and have so many sold out concerts, were the little kids really go crazy...

well, that's my opinion, but it's shared by almost everybody I know...
DancingQueen - 13.04.2007, 18:03

Well here in the Netherlands, we share the same thoughts Nina! In some way, I am glad to her the Germans don't like Tokio Hotel either. You're so right about Bill: he looks like a girl and their attitude is far from 'cool'. The make fools of themselves indeed: especially with all those merchandise which seems to show up everywhere. I mean, they even sell shoes here in the Netherlands with some Tokio Hotel logo! Loving that group.. Most people who seem to like that band are for others the obvious outsiders. People who don't want to be like the rest of the school for example, who try to be different (which isn't forbidden of course) but the fact that they try so hard to get an image like that is annoying.
Toni - 13.04.2007, 19:08

Stay cool, people!

There were always groups like Tokio Hotel in the past: Bay City Rollers, The Teens, New Kids On The Block, Take That and so on.

It´s always the same. Many young people, especially girls are crazy about them, and for the rest they are "uncool".

I am not especially a fan of them, but I think everybody should hear what she/he likes. I remember when it was very uncool to like ABBA....

By the way, some of the Tokio Hotel songs are not that bad: for example "Durch den Monsun". And what they make is pure rock music.

Take that are really cool in the UK right now, their comeback has been great, i think their new songs are wonderful, I have never heard of Tokio Hotel.

I agree, Gill. Their new album "Beautiful World" sounds absolutly brilliant.
Perhaps are groups like Tokio Hotel accepted in 10 or 15 years, too.

Toni wrote: Stay cool, people!

Don't worry, I am very calm. ;) Just my way of discussing, and I agree with Nina. You see, the fact that you consider Tokio Hotel as a group for young girls who overreact when they see those boys preforming, isn't really true. I guess most of their fans are girls indeed, but I think I'm an example of those who don't like their stuff. It's just that image..

Hehe, I'm not angry or something like that, don't get me wrong. ;)
burningmybridges - 14.04.2007, 19:29

He-he, I didn't mean for this to turn into a topic about Tokio Hotel, but I'm grateful for your answers. I've never heard their music, but I still read German pop magazine "Bravo", and I've seen them top German lists several times. I agree their look is a bit "corny", but they're only like 17 years old, and want to be "cool". I remember about 25 years ago, another German teenager group, called "Teens" was equally popular there. And they weren't bad, actually. And, as someone mentioned here, it reminds me a bit of the time when it was really "uncool" to buy ABBA records, especially for boys. Somehow, ABBA topped the charts anyway....

By the way, this is some of my favourite artists, after ABBA:
Bruce Springsteen, U2, The Darkness, The Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Travis, Rod Stewart, David bowie, Elton John, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Mika, 10 cc, Manfred Mann's Earthband, Reo Speedwagon, Scorpions, Slade, Sweet, The Bangles, The Bee Gees, Cher, Scissor Sisters, Ash, Audioslave, Olivia Newton John, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Sepultura, The Ramones, The Clash, The Jam, Red Hot Chilipeppers, Blondie, Boney M,
Dolly Parton, Simon & Garfunkel, Smokie/ Chris Norman, Suzy Quatro, Metallica, Rufus Wainright, Midnight Oil, ELO, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, Kiss, and many, many more. And Scandinavian artists, like A-ha, Kent, The Ark, Bob Hund, Kim Larsen, Timbuktu, and many more.
And, better than all these artists are, of course, ABBA! :P

Geir, not about to book a room at Tokio Hotel...

This may seem strange, But I have never heard a single song by Mika :!: . Just though I should say that. :!:

I'll add a few I haven't seen in the listings yet: Styx, Chicago, Journey, Foreigner, and Hall & Oates.

burningmybridges - 17.04.2007, 02:17

:)
Mika's song "Grace Kelly" topped the Brittish charts, and shortly after that, he was on our biggest national TV show ( "Først & sist" ), and now he's topped the charts here in Norway, too. The critics are split, some thinks his music is genious, and some think it's pure rubbish... :?
I like his record, and especially "Grace Kelly". It's fresh pop, with a sence of humour, in my ears. Kind of 70's, actually. It's so refreshing when songs like that comes up, after all those endless years of that bl...y R&B. Well, this is just my opinion, of ourse, and I fear that Mika might just be one of those "one hit wonders".

Clock_With_Lemon - 17.04.2007, 04:03

I recently found out I like "Bill Haley & His Comets".
ilovesweden - 17.04.2007, 22:49

I listen to Françoise Hardy.... I love Françoise Hardy.... I breathe Françoise Hardy....

and then I listen to 60's/70's pop-rock music (Beatles, Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd) and classical music (mainly piano sonatas and symphonies, Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, Dvorak, Rossini)
Joe_Bear - 18.04.2007, 05:10

1. Les Paul and Mary Ford
2. Genesis
3. The Beatles
4. Chet Atkins
5. The Strokes
6. U2
7. The Beach Boys
8. The Rolling Stones
9. The Jam
10. Weird Al Yankovic

I love Les Paul and Mary Ford, in some ways they are very much like the ABBA of the 50's. They were a married couple and had 40 top 40 hits. I like most guitar bands from the UK, underground & alternative rock. Besides pop and rock, my favorite are Bossa Nova, traditional instrumental Irish music, and classsical guitar especially peices writen by J.S. Bach.

I like and listen to a variety of stuff from Fleetwood Mac to Johnny Cash, from Roxette to Doug Kershaw. But I would say at this point, my No. 2 favorite artist is a guitar player named Jesse Cook. (Hmmm. Wonder who is No. 1?) Actually, he's much more than a "guitar player". He composes all his own music, a fusion of flamenco with everything from Arabic influenced sounds to Cuban rumba beats. The first time I heard something by him on a compliation CD I was hooked and six CDs later, I have yet to be disappointed. As well, it doesn't hurt that since he is from Canada and tours quite a bit, I've had the opportunity to see him perform quite a few times. The guy (and the talented musicians who tour with him) are simply awesome and put on an amazing show. It is fun to anticipate when he releases a new CD - it reminds me of "back in the day" when a new ABBA record was coming out. :)

Funny. I really enjoy listening to her on radio, so I actually wonder why i haven't thought about a cd yet. Maybe it's a general thing about buying additional cd's, maybe it's the doubt about the quality of songs besides the hits. I guess I should think about a future Best of at least.

Can't believe I haven't replied to this one yet - perhaps the thought of coming up with a definitive list was too daunting first time round:

Blondie
Boney M
Baccara
Sheila B Devotion
Donna Summer
Bananarama
Kylie
Emma Bunton
Sophie Ellis Bextor
ELO
Duran Duran
Japan
Thompson Twins
Soft Cell
Sparks
Visage
Ultravox

and I could go on but I think that's enough to be getting on with!

Oh my giddy aunt how could I forget The Dooleys! Shame on me!

'Wanted! Boy, you know you've got me coz you're wanted
Now all I've got's a memory I'm haunted
Living in the shadow of your lie-aaahahhhhh!'

What an incredible tune...

Emmanuelle,

I was impressed to see the name Andrew Gold on your list. For someone who has had such a great career, it seems hardly anyone knows who he is.

Do you know his work as a producer, or are you more familiar with him in some other capacity?

Emmanuelle - 14.06.2008, 04:43

All of it. :-) I really like him as a performer, actually. I wish he would have recorded more. He is a fine singer (and keyboard player and guitar player). I am mostly familiar with his solo work but I am also in the process of discovering his work with Bryndle. I only know one of his songs with Wax and I don't care much for it but I'm going to try to keep an open mind and find out more.

And his song Genevieve is often played on oldies radio in France which is how I got to know him.
Pabs - 14.06.2008, 07:29

and

Bruce Springsteen

How could I have forgotten him?
MarryMeAgnetha - 14.06.2008, 08:27

Emmanuelle,

I first heard of him as a producer for Linda Ronstadt in the 70s. He was a great producer, plus he did some arranging (strings, voices, etc.), played guitar, keys, and sang on a lot of her tracks. He's very talented. I think he's one of those players that mostly industry people know about, but obviously he has a fan following as well, which he absolutely deserves.

In fact, you seem more knowledgeable about his work than I do. Lucky you!
