Interesting!

It of course will be harder and harder to beat these numbers in the days of music downloads.
Impressive that your idol Kylie is at place 12 by the way!

Joe_Bear - 12.04.2007, 05:28

It is still impressive because most of top ten are individuals who have (or had) a longer time to accumulate their numbers, since most bands break up.

so one way of looking at ABBA is third after The Beatles and Queen.

WOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

As a teenager, I hear so much rubbish that people my age listen too... Like the chipmonks on speed ... Manufacted rap ... Some 'beats' made on someones home computer which is on all the music channels. I get stick from some people and have disagreements with people who say ABBA are rubbish ..... BUT ..... Is the music they listen too in the top 10?? Infact, is their music in the whole list?? I THINK NOT and I therefore rest my case :D :D :D

It shows how well ABBA did, to be only 343,000 UK Singles Sales behind Queen - an Act who had a much longer Career.

ABBA would actually be ahead of Queen had the UK got 'Eagle' as a 1978 Single, as many Countries did. Everything by ABBA was a Top 5 UK Hit, in those days. Also, if 'Lay All Your Love On Me', had been on 7 Inch Vinyl, in 1981, & not a 7 Inch sized Song, on expensive 12 Inch Vinyl - it was widely seen as a rip off ABBA release in the UK - hence why it peaked at Number 7. (It cost them a Top 5 Hit, & many UK Sales, that they never released it as a normal 7 inch).

Also, ABBA's Sales were further held back by them only releasing 2 UK Singles in 1977, 1978, 1980 & 1981. Had everything been taken advantage of by ABBA, they would have sold at least 11 Million to 12 Million UK Singles - not 10,021,000.....

Yeah and Elton wouldn't be ahead of them had he not done that song when Princess Diana died...

And if Benny and Björn would allow to release Just Like That as a single and if Universal would promote it properly things would look different, too.

Don´t blame me! I´ve never bought a single of Cliff, the Beatles, Elvis, Madonna, Elton, Michael or Queen in the UK.

abbagav

Of course he would!
He has scored hits in the UK in 5 decades. He started in 1969 with Your Song and sold masses of records in the Seventies and he is still doing well... still standing if you will... lol!

Well I beg to differ Caribbean - I can't remember the exact figure but his Diana song sold literally (5?) millions (I'm sure 'onlyabba4me' could give us a precise figure!) which if you ignore would put him below ABBA.

I found the exact number and you are right. Unbelievable... when you realise that the original was so much better!
Worldwide this single sold 37 Million times... that is just crazy!

Here is the Top 10 of best sold singles in the UK:

01. "Candle In The Wind '97" - Elton John. (4.86 million)
The lyrics to Elton's 1974 classic were re-written in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales. The song was only ever performed once publicly; at Diana's funeral. It has sold 37 million around the world.

02. "Do They Know It's Christmas?" - Band Aid. (3.55m)
The first ever multi-artist charity single (*), this track was recorded in Christmas 1984 by a host of celebrity vocalists to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia.

03. "Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen. (2.13m)
Arguably the first track to benefit from having a video, this epic spent 9 weeks at number 1 across Christmas 1975 (1.19m). It returned to the top for a further 5 weeks at number 1 at Christmas 1991, a few weeks after the death of lead singer, Freddie Mercury (0.94m).

04. "Mull Of Kintyre" - Wings (2.05m)

05. "Rivers Of Babylon" / "Brown Girl In The Ring" - Boney M (1.985m)

06. "You're The One That I Want" - John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John (1.975m)

07. "Relax" - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (1.91m)

08. "She Loves You" - The Beatles (1.89m)

09. "Unchained Melody" - Robson & Jerome (1.84m)

10. "Mary's Boychild - Oh My Lord" - Boney M (1.79m)
