So Long - Underrated... ?
For me this is ABBAs most underrated single. I love the edgy sound of it. The performance(s) is wonderful to it. Its the most tongue in cheek track on the "ABBA" album.
abbangelears - 09.04.2007, 22:01

I like So long, because it's a healthy trip into those rocky spaces that, for some reason, Bjorn and Benny felt so ashamed of years later. It's not among my favourite abba songs though, but I agree with you: it has always been underrated, probably because of that "intrusion" into fields where they didn't belong. My personal opinion is that songs like So long or Watch out are worthy and not something you can be ashamed of. If you listen to the live version of So long in Abba-The movie (Australian tour) you'll see how Bjorn and Benny had already rearranged the song to turn it into something different, far from that rocky atmosphere it has in the studio version.
ABBAnator - 09.04.2007, 22:30

I don't think it was really underrated. As Bjorn has described it, it was a foray into a more rock rather then pop sound. Bjorn realized that ABBA's strength was in the pop realm and they really weren't a rock band.

I enjoy listening to the song but it's not one of ABBA's finest. It did fairly well when released but it's hard to make the case it was a great rock song so it probably did as well as it could have.

I really like the Made In Sweden For Export video clip for this song though, I really like Frida's dancing in that one, very entertaining. I think that video may have been underrated but from my point of view the song did as well as it should have when released in 1975.

I think So Long is a great song. I like the melody, and the message the lyrics deliver is really fun. I also like the cute dance the girls do at the end, and I hate videos that cut this off. It's corny but all ABBA. Agnetha cuts a sensual figure in her white spandex suit, and when she strikes a pose with the finger in the air, I feel faint. :rotate:

In the video from Disco ('75?), Aggie does an extra turn and almost runs into Frida. Whoops, but I forgive her. :love4: (I don't know if Frida did.)

Well said, Love this song as well, I like the early clips of ABBA preforming the song as well, especially in Germany.

Nice to have even though on a Bootleg DVD.

The vocals rock! While the instrumentation isn't what we think of as "typical" ABBA, the vocals truly remind me of the vocal styles and intensity on the "Arrival" LP. I've always liked it for that reason.
Fire&Ice - 10.04.2007, 10:14

I luuuve the song. It was among the first songs I had ever heard from ABBA. There are plenty of studio performance clips of So long as well as the one, my favourite from Made in Sweden for Export! (oh that leg! hehe)

I like ABBA rock in fact, though their strength was really in pop realm, agreed.

And the dancing routine! :love4:
drimnagh - 10.04.2007, 16:15

Ok. ABBA's forte WAS pop but I really do think they could rock when they wanted to! I love songs like So Long, Tiger, On And On And On, etc when the girls let rip.

You go, Agnetha and Frida!

Good topic. In some interview, Björn spoke on a very negative way about this song. To me, So Long sounds great during the movie and I won't deny I like that rock-sound a lot.
Toni - 10.04.2007, 18:00

ABBA´s rocksongs are great, although Björn & Benny don´t think so.

I like "So Long" very much, because it´s rock but still catchy.
Only one position higher and it would have been another top ten hit in Germany.

So long

Not one of my favourite songs, its Ok and I did enjoy there performance in Abba-The Movie but as I said not one of my favourites.
Anonymous - 10.04.2007, 18:49

i don't like the song
Clock_With_Lemon - 11.04.2007, 06:33

The song is not among my favourites, But I agree it's underrated. Come on, It's not that bad!
Carribean - 11.04.2007, 06:57

I don't like the song at all.
It is nice to see them perform it (like in The Movie) but I hardly ever listen to it.
Not my cup of ABBA tea...
Zeebee - 11.04.2007, 07:12

At first, I didn't like So Long at all, and I very rarely listened to it, but it has grown on me. I don't mind listening to it, but it still isn't a favorite. It's not underrated.
Clock_With_Lemon - 11.04.2007, 11:01

I was just listening to "So Long" and I thought to my self "Man, This song is great!"
Joe - 11.04.2007, 18:02

Well, not every ABBA song needs to be a masterpiece, but just play it and play it loud.... Fun!

:band:

... I just wonder what has turned out of crazy Tracy & Daisy? :P

So Long recorded between 22nd and 23rd of Augest 1974. Toni said B/B did not think it was great, thats because B/B are perfectionist and thats why the Voulez-Vous album took almost a year to be releast. abbangelears said B/B had already rearranged the song. When I wen,t home for lunch I check out the movie and also supper trouper and both versions where choped up but the same, not rearranged.

So long, see you honey
can't buy me with your money
Tracy, Daisy, they may be ceazy
but I,ll never be your girl
so long, see you hony
can,t buy me with your money
you know its not worth tryin
so long so long so long

So long see you honey
can,t buy me with your money
you know it,s not worth tryin
so long so long so long.

The first I ever heard the song was last year because I am a new ABBA fan of only three years now and that was at the Waterloo concert at the music circus in Ma U.S... They did the song at the end of the show and I did not know the words and really could not under stand what all the words were and they were waving I thought they were saying good-by and then came back later with an encore I have the word now as every one can see but I still like the song anyway.

So long...
I love "So Long".....it really sounds fresh and "peppy"! :)

It is a nice change of pace from many of the more "typical" ABBA tunes that I listen over and over to....when it comes up, I almost feel like jumping up and dancing....and that is scary.

Maybe it was not a huge commercial success, but, I think that it has an edginess to it that makes it a unique track. Not all ABBA songs need to sound the same! ROCK IT! (I also like it that it is the girls rockin' out, not Bjorn! The girls sound fantastic signing loud and forceful on this song. :D
Bonnie - 17.04.2007, 12:16

It's a typical early ABBA song. I'm not to keen on it but it's a great song to watch. That dance routine at the end is to die for.
The live version from The Movie is brilliant with that little "In The Mood" bit. I think this is one of those ABBA songs that is in fact better when you hear it live than when you hear the studio recording.
drimnagh - 17.04.2007, 17:48

Agreed, Bonnie! It's not that great a song but sung live with the girls cavorting all over the shop it comes alive! Love the Glenn Miller sequence, too. One of Agnetha and Frida's most vitriolic vocals.

I agree as well Bonnie, Much Better Live, And you are right about the dance routine at the end.

The Girls are having so much fun.

i love this song. maybe because it wasnt a worldwide release?
Didi - 21.04.2007, 10:40

The song actually grew and gre on me over the years, now it is up in my favourites.

I particularly like the performance they did during the ABBA Made In Sweden For Export show in ´76 which won the Montereux Golden Tulip Award that year.

I have a very old clip of them doing So Long, Frida in that short mini skirt, lifting her leg up onto Benny´s piano!

Alas the clip I have isn´t a very clear qualtiy clip, the only one I got was from a web download, and I am looking for a much better version in high quality picture, if anyone can help and perhaps has it in good quality on DVD or VHS, I would love to do my thing to it. I included the clip that I have on my own little ABBA project, but I am still looking to improve that clip. Any help appreciated!

At the moment the clip is touched up to improve the colour and remove some VHS wear and tear marks from top and bottom, I also added the stereo digial dolby sound to it, so it sounds wonderful, the lip synch being spot on, you may have seen some of the other clips I have done on the YouTube bits or my blog, a link can be found in my personal info here.

So I´d like to "complete" So Long to my high specifications using the ABBA For Export clip and then update my compilation, then I would be a happy man!

So would I, Diego so would I!! (a happy woman, I mean! :D ) You know I've been looking for Made In Sweden, especially because of THAT So long clip! I do have it on tape from Super Troupers (thanks to Andrea  who helped me revive my early So long memory) but I would also like to have the complete Made in Sweden.
Didi - 21.04.2007, 21:03

I will look again at SuperTroupers, I doubt it is there in full though, otherwise problem solved, I recall it being just a snippett!

Diego
Fire&Ice - 21.04.2007, 21:08

Unfortunately, it is only a snippet.. well not exactly a snippet, as they have shown it exactly as of that leggy piano till the end. But it is not enough for the greedy me.
Didi - 21.04.2007, 21:14

Or me! I want the whole clip? Anyone else help here?

abbagav - 21.04.2007, 21:18

Hmmm....not one of my favourites - the production is a bit too ' hissy' for my tastes.

Funny choice of single really when you think of all the other great tunes on the 'ABBA' album. But then, who am I to judge - it's all part of the lovely ABBA history that we all know and love!

I'm sure we'd all have made some changes to single choices along the way...
