ABBA won with a great song, great costumes and great smiles. Just an overall great appearance; and an important piece of ABBA history.

My recording of Eurovision shows that they hadn't perfected the ABBA sound, and I've heard much better renditions of Waterloo from 32 years ago and 31 years ago and ..... I think that as the girls got their sound together, Björn wisely decided to shut up, and ABBA was really born.

I was going to refer to that video, because the English announcer gets Benny and Björn mixed up. Also, he can't pronounce Agnetha, so he settles for Anna. These are examples of ABBA's lack of recognition before Eurovision '74. By '76, everyone in the press could pronounce Agnetha, and they knew who Benny and Björn were. (I've even taught my wife to pronounce Agnetha, and I seldom teach my wife anything.)

Carribean: I'm not sure when you say "Yes.." that you're agreeing with me that the Eurovision rendition of Waterloo was not the "perfected" ABBA sound or you don't. No "third voice" at Eurovision - maybe it was the sound system. Nevertheless, Agnetha's smile was a winner. :applause:

During Melodiefestivalen Björn's voice was even more prominent and on both performances the girls' voices (especially Agnetha's due to her face and the expression on Frida's during the ESC-performance) were often slightly off-key.
They were much better when they performed on Top Of The Pops or on Seaside Special. And of course during their tours in 1977 and 1979.

Forgive me, I'm and engineer and I'm always taking things apart - just ask my wife. The Eurovision win was a landmark ABBA achievement, and it deserves recognation even after 33 years. ESC marked the beginning of a 10 year journey to fame and many, many great sounds. Some so perfect they can't be faulted. :applause:

However, I hear a few off-key notes in the ESC performance, and I understand it was Agnetha's problem; In BLDS, Palm quotes Michael Tretow as saying: "When I first met her, Agnetha was singing off-key quite a lot." (p262) In some videos you can see Agnetha put her finger in her ear so she could hear herself better over the background.

In the later clips of Waterloo, I'm not always sure that the girls aren't lip-syncing and that the audio wasn't replaced with the studio recording. If they aren't holding mikes, I'm not sure it's live audio. Whatever the situation, the ABBA sound is usually there. :thumbup:

Hey all!!

Last night i watched my eurovision 1974 dvd, Havent seen it for a while and i enjoyed it :P.

On Agnetha, I do recall that on the wow wow wow wow bits, she went out of tune and frida sings louder to try and cover the out of tune-ness lol.

In the winning performance, Things dont seem to goes as they were planned. This sort of thing happened in the Melodifestivalen winning performance as well. They try to have the same camera angles but the girls and guys are at different angles.

E.g - In the little musical bit before the 2nd chorus, Bjorn's guitar is facing away, so you just get a shot of the side of the camera. On the winning peroformance for some reason Bjorns voice is much more prominent and the ''fanfare'' at the end of waterloo doesnt seem to really work on the winning performance.

Love seeing Agnetha kiss Bjorn and them all waving and bowing at the end :D They really need to release this on dvd.

Indeed, 33 years! April is a good month for us fans: first Agnetha's birthday, then Waterloo in Brighton and after that Björns birthday. Did someone spotted any Waterloo-happenings on the Dutch television by the way?

Even though the language is different than ESC, the sound is perfect. Not sure when this was recorded compared to '74 ESC, but it's clearly a promotional video. There's no audience, and the girls don't have mikes. I assume they were either lip-syncing or the sound was overdubbed in the studio after the video was made.

Ignoring language, we get the true ABBA sound and Agnetha in her wonder woman outfit. Frida's hair is better, she's less stiff and her smiles are great. If they looked and sounded like this for ESC, they would have won twice for the same performance. :)

I vaguely remember watching it and I loved the song!

I was watching today a dvd with Waterloo in their Ring Ring costumes (in English) and at the end, the Napoleon comes to greet them! :lol:

Bjorn is actually wearing a kind of Superman costume, with that cape! :mrgreen:

As far as I know it's from the NDR programme "Musik aus Studio B" in 1974 (see also http://www.ABBAonTV.com).
