#5 FEB/MARCH07: ADELAIDE AND SOUTH AUSTRALIA

    Sa., March, 31st of 2007.

We probaly spent quiet a long time in this fourth largest of all Australian states and territories though we haven't seen much so far - the main aim was once again to accumulate enough money to travel further towards West, the next big target is Perth in WA (Western Australia) and we're finally leaving Adelaide and surroundings on Monday, the 2nd of April... very soon, fortunately!

Due to a user-unfriendly State Library in the capital I was and I still am forced to manage most of my online stuff in internet-cafes rather than in free libraries (where only one hour daily is available). Nevertheless I'd like to give you once more an imagination of what our current life-situation in Down Under looks like...

We left St. Kilda and Melbourne after the ultimate heyday (The St. Kilda Festival on February, 11th: http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-52075169nx54173-123.html) and made our way via the notorious Great Ocean Road (http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-52075169nx54173-124.html) and within two days to Adelaide, the capital of South Australia (also known as the Festival State).
We got to know to some locals in a motel in Melbourne at New Year's Eve and spent the first week in their house in Maggil, an Adelaide suburb - due to the pretty pricey re-rego for our car ("FUCKUP") we ran out of money (though we saved already money for a hostel) and had to call the Harvest Hotline once again...

And after a thunderstormy night and another 150km we arrived in a little town called Waikerie (http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-52075169nx54173-126.html), northeast of Adelaide to pick oranges: a nice experience in life you shouldn't miss in NO CASE! Well, honestly, maybe you can - work was hard and we were not exactly motivated, nevertheless we get to know to the friendliest croud of backpackers imaginable what made those two weeks we spent there in end more than a success...
After we enough of sleeping in the car every single night, numerous wrist-scratches due to spikey orange-trees and unreliable employers we left - now together with two Belgium brothers, Jelle and Stijn, to try our luck again in Adelaide - originally we wanted to be in Perth already in the beginning of March, but #1 plans can change and #2 we have to go where work is, and there were none in WA as we called the Harvest Hotline...

After some nice days in Adelaide (the annual Fringe Festival had just begun) we met up with a couple of old lads from Waikerie and started grape-picking in the McLaren Vale region (ca. 40km south of Adelaide) - another fabulous, incredibly funny time for we visited the city about every weekend and went for a swim in the Southern ocean day by day.
Again - simply not having enough for it - we slept in the car (if not at the beach or on football-grounds with sprinklers who transformed us and our sleepingbags in poor sodden creatures). Again our payments were not reliable at all and don't get me started when talking about scratches or cuts - I literally slaughtered my finger-joints daily by using snips to cut the grapes...

But it was fun. French transvestite-birthday parties. Guitar, gambling, street theatre. Raspberry Fanta, BBQ and delicious pizza en masse. And then, about two weeks ago, I fell in a medium heavy hole as most of our old buddies were suddenly gone - Jelle and Stijn only had limited lime and made their way further north to Uluru and Darwin and we, still needing money, had to continue working.

Three things in my mind, though, make me steadily smile: the never-declining ambition to write, the persistence that nothing is static and everything is going further inevitably and, most important of all, the thought of one single living human being_

Exactly one week ago we finally found some lads to share fuel (and to a certain amount even fun;) with to travel to Kangaroo Island (http://www.iphpbb.com/board/ftopic-52075169nx54173-129.html), after returning there was not much work left and we finished grape-picking on Wednesday - in the meantime we succeeded in finding travel-company for the long, long way via Flinders Ranges NP, the Nullarbor Plain and Kalgoorlie to Perth...

It's 3:11pm in the afternoon, the sun is shining. Donnie just called me and we gonna have one last time pizza together (there is always a last time and a last time and a last time, I know very well) while spending the waiting time gambling (House of the Dead II... if there is some acceptable stuff in the movies we'll watch it (don't miss HOT BUZZ, another fantastic movie by the makers of SHAWN OF THE DEAD!

Ah, I forgot. It is indeed still hot in Australia, even though it's gonna get winter soon - well, I don't wear anything else besides my flipflops, anyway (X

Koenigin Luzia, I haven't forgotten you, little sister, you neither - and all the others - I'm sorry, there is just too much to do (: But don't worry, I'll give my best -

    see ya in hell/down under,
    the hydrA
