Are there post length limits or login timeouts?
I recently had a couple quite frustrating experiences as it pertains to posting. In one case I wrote a very lengthy reply to a post on the forum and when I went to submit the post I was prompted to login again, when I logged-in the entire content of my post was lost. In another instance, I was responding to another member in a PM, it took me awhile to write as it was a careful and lengthy response. Again, when I went to submit I was prompted to login and again the entire content of the reply was lost. Let me just say I wasn't too happy (to put it mildly) after putting so much careful thought into the posts.
So my question is:
Is there a post length limit that logs you out when you attempt to submit? Or is there a timeout period that logs you out? If so I would like to know the parameters if available so I can avoid this problem in the future.
Regards,
Bruce

Bruce, I would suggest that when you login, click the box where it says "log me in automatically each visit". Since I've been doing that, I've never been prompted to login again.

I actually do have the automatic login checked. Recently a tornado ripped through my neighborhood destroying the DSL infrastructure that I was using. I had an old Dial-up modem/router laying around that I hooked up for the interim until I can get broadband again. Since I hooked this up the automatic login doesn't work anymore. The modem/router has a bult-in hardware firewall so either the auto-login is being blocked by the level of cookies i'm allowing through the firewall or it's a problem with the dynamic IP addressing used with dial-up connections (DSL and Cable modems usually use fixed IP's).
Regardless of all that though, the problem is being automatically logged out, not logging in, and it only happens in the scenarios I described.

If there is no activity from a logged-in account it is shut down after 20 or 30 minutes for safety reasons, I'm not totally sure about it. Not sure either if I can do anything about it.
It has happened to me too. You have a lengthy reply and it can happen that you expire the response time window to stay logged in and s***-E !!!!
After it has happened two or three times and I found myself biting the pillow I made it a habit to copy the content of longer replies to the clipboard before hitting the send button. When I then hang for whatever reason I just can log in again, go and paste the clipboard contents into the reply window. Finished.
This has saved me a couple of times now and it's a good feeling to watch your emergency parachute unfold. :D

I use the copy trick if I have to look at a post in another thread to recall something for my reply. When I come back and re-start the reply, I can paste the text I already wrote. In extreme cases, I paste the text into Word and finish the message there before going back.
I suppose I could open another instance of the forum and have two windows going.

That works pretty well, especially using the Firefox browser where you can open two window tabs in the same browser.
It won't keep you from being logged-out though if you pause your interaction with the forum to type a long reply.

Thanks Johnny, good advice. It did actually occur to me to copy the post to the clipboard, but only after I had lost the post. :?
If I can only remember to do so before I press "submit". I guess if it happens to me again the frustration might help me to remember .... :D

I'll throw my two cents in-
I also checked the auto-login box, and every morning when I check in I'm fine. But if I go longer than a day (if I'm running late in the morning and/or get in late at night and I don't check in for 2 days or more), I'll have to log in all over again.
Other than that, my two suggestions of opening 2 FF tabs or copying the text every so often have been given, so I guess I'm out of ideas........... :P

Bruce I know how you feel, I've taken to copying before I press submit. I don't know about you but I can never rewrite a piece the same. Which can drive me mad, because usual it only happens when you like what you've written.

I know the feeling guys!
But in case you forget to copy your post, and even if the login error happens or you log out automatically, just hit the "back" button in your browser as many times as necessary to find your post. Then copy it!
It works for me every time.

hello
i have used the "copy" or "backbutton" trick so many times...good advice.
when we where on the old site i used to reply from the telly net: i didn't havea pc...so my responses had to be short because it was a case of using the on-screen keyboard...
it used to take me half an hour to do a couple of scentences.
what i do is use word...i have what i am replying to and cascade the response i am doing on word...so i have both on-screen at the same time.(saving of course!).
has anybody else had the site up twice at the same time?
this sometimes works , although i do not recommend it if you have had a drink: my wife had to tell me to stop arguing with myself.
you can also type half the reply , post it on the site then do the rest as an edit.
there are loads of times i have done this , this scentence beeing a case in point.
gary :D (i copied this first!)

Hi!
Grrr, I wish I'd seen this post earlier!
I spent two hours translating an interview I found with Frida on an old cassette tape, from Norwegian radio in 1982.
Then I spent another one and a half hour writing the interview down for the "Frida" topic. And, right, when I pressed the "Submit" button, it was all lost, and I had to log in again. I was furious!!
After calming down, I tried again a couple of days later, and, yes, the same thing happened! I've given up now, my heart can't take it one more time...
It's strange, though, I did the same thing on this very site with an Agnetha interview a while ago, and that was no problem. So, what's changed? I know the site owner prefers Agnetha interviews, but surely that can't be it??

No, it can't be it Burningmybridges!
In case it happens again, just click the "back" button in your browser and all your work will miraculously appear. Then make sure to COPY it and then log in again and just paste it in the "Post a reply" field.
Now I am really looking forward to that :frida: interview?? PLEAAASSSEEEE!!!!!!!!!

Believe me Geir I am VERY sympathetic to your plight (I opened this topic a while back  ).
I always highlight long posts now and copy them to the clipboard before I hit "submit". I haven't lost a post since I started doing that.
Just highlight all your text, then "right-click" on the highlighted text. A menu will appear with the option "copy". Select "copy". This action will save the text in the computer's memory. It's known as "copying to the clipboard". If you hit submit and lose your post, just start a new "reply". In the text window, "right-click" again. The option "paste" should be bolded in the menu. Just select "paste" and all the text that was saved when you copied will be pasted in the window.
You might want to paste the text to Windows Notepad or Word before you hit submit just to make sure you actually saved the text to memory. Once you have copied to the clipboard, you can paste it as many times as you want. The contents of the clipboard is only replaced if you perform another "copy" procedure.
No more lost posts with this procedure. Works every time. :D Just always remember to perform a "copy" before you hit submit.
Hitting the "back" button in the browser (as Ivana and Gary suggest) doesn't work on all internet browsers (doesn't work with mine). But the "copy and paste" method works on all Microsoft Windows based computers regardless of the browser or settings used.
I hope you try to translate the Frida interview one more time, as I would be really interested to read it (and many other members would also I'm very sure :agree: ). Just remember to copy to the clipboard before you hit submit! None of us want you to have a heart attack Geir. :D
Good Luck! :frida:
Bruce
PS: It's got nothing to do with Agnetha V Frida interviews  , it's just the amount of time it takes between the time you start the post and the time you hit submit. As Johnny said it's somewhere between 20-30 minutes before you get auto-logged out.

Well, "Fire and Ice", how can I resist you...
..and, thanks, Bruce, for your explaination. I think I understand what happened now. But, I still don't get why it didn't happen with my Agnetha inteview.. One more question, though, can a topic be "to long", is there a limit?
Anyway, I'll try again shortly. But, if it fails this time, too, I'll have more than a heart attack, I'll simply explode!
Geir :)

I don't "think" there are any post length limits. I've seen a couple here that were very long. But don't quote me on that I'm not positive.
One more thing. You might try writing the translation in Microsoft Word or Notepad first (or the word processor of your choice). That way the timeout doesn't matter at all because all you have to do is copy and paste it to the reply window which only takes a second or two. Copy and paste works with almost any Windows based program written in the last 8-10 years (some of the very early programs don't let you highlight text but that's rare). This might be the best way actually. No need to worry about heart problems or explosions if you do it that way. :D

Sorry but yes, there's a size limit in the posts!!!
This size limit is 64 KBytes = 65536 bytes or characters (= 2^16). This has to do with the data structure used to store it, and this is the usual limit in this type of text input. You'll get the same limit in the majority of programs and Web pages when you are asked for type text in a multiline Text Box, that is, in near every form you fill and send. To post an answer or new thread isn't really nothing more that fill and send data in a form, from the point of view of the programmer.
I'm writing this offline in a file and then I'll copy it to send it. In this way, I'm sure I don't have to retype this in case of any failure, and as you are seeing this costs me more time than to others because my not very high level knowledge of the english language.
With 65536 bytes is more than OK for the 99.95 % of the cases. This means 585 lines of 112 characters. But if you try to copy from a long file, for example, you'll exceed the limit and, this is very important, the post will be send without _any_ warning about its long size, but the receiver will get a truncated post.
And Geir, sorry but are you saying that you wrote one and a half hour that Frida interview without writing previously to a file? That needs remain to a permanent place in first place and then you cand send it many times if you want! And If you use Windows, not saving this information is much more dangerous if you're using that crime against Humanity called Windows. Hey OS/2 users out there: You're not alone ;-)
Now playing: When I close my eyes.

Hi!
OMG, I tried again yesterday! And it failed again! I'm so annoyed, I had to pull myself together, not to throw my computer out of my window! AAAAARRRRGHHH!!!!!
After spending yet another one and a half hour writing, I marked it, and copied it. When I tried submitting it, I was asked to log in again, just like before. But, now I used the "back" button. And found an empty frame. All lost again! Even though I copied it, I can't find it anywhere! I give up!
And admit, I could really use some education about these bl..dy machines!

PorSiempre is right, I think.
Geir, if you write long posts, write them into a txt file with notepad or any other simple editor and save it. Really, it pays off.
