Diana Ross
As part of The Supremes or as a solo artist Diana Ross has given us some great music.
As Part of The Supremes (with the help of the other two girls in the group!)
you get great songs like Reflections, Baby Love, The Happening and many more. As a solo artist you get the Fabulous I'm Still Waiting, Ain't No Mountain High Enough, My Old Piano, I'm Coming Out and Chain Reaction. I think she has given music a long list of great hits
Much prefer her solo version of When You Tell Me That You Love Me, then her duet with Westlife.
What do you think of Diana Ross?

Without a doubt Diana Ross is an icon and a living legend. She has done several great songs that became classics in a career that spans over 40(!) years. She probably did her best songs in the Motown period, first with the Supremes and after that solo. But her later work isn't bad either, f.e. the 1995 'Take me higher' album. Some of her eighties albums have aged less well, f.e. the extremely weak 1983 'Ross' album. But she is an artist that is always trying to look for something new. Probably that's why she has lasted so long. Also very versatile. One of my favourite Ross albums is 'Stolen moments', recorded at a one-off live concert at the Ritz Theatre, where she performed songs from her movie 'Lady sings the blues' and other jazz standards. Backed by the best jazz musicians around, she was on top form. Her a-cappella rendition of 'Strange fruit' is truly amazing.
Recently she made a come-back with the 'I love you' album, an album with covers of classic love songs plus 1 new track.
Actually, only last weekend I ordered tickets for her concert here in the Netherlands in May. Looking forward to that!

Glad John mentioned Mirror Mirror. If anyone knows if Diana Ross ever released many of her 80s singles on CDs, please dp let me know. I'm thinking of songs like Swept Away, Mirror Mirror, as mentioned, Muscles, Experience, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Pieces of Ice. The compilations seem to have the same songs on them, not these 80s hits..
Undeniably a great talent though I think some of Diana's songs were a bit sugary. Never liked Endless Love and even Chain Reaction, an odd song for a Beegees composition in my little o'l opinion!
But Love Hangover is a classic. One of the sexiest songs ever put on record!

Hi Merton, there is actually a compilation available of Diana's eighties recordings:
http://www.amazon.com/Diana-Ross-Greatest-Hits-Years/dp/B000002X1I
There are some strange omissions in this compilation, f.e. 'Eaten alive', 'Pieces of ice', 'Dirty looks' and 'Work that body', but still a nice collection of her recordings for RCA. In 1989 she returned to Motown with the 'Workin' overtime' album.

Thanks Hades for that info about the RCA years. I didn't realise that the 80s singles were coming off a different record label which I guess explains why they don't feature on the "general" compilations maybe?
My favourite from that era is Swept Away, which I think was written by the American duo Hall & Oates (OK, showing my age here). I see according to the latest American Idol series Diana Ross will be featured as one of the song coaches....

I can't claim to be a fan, but once I heard the 12" version of "Chain Reaction" at some Do I was at, loved it so much I went out and bought myself a copy of it soon afterwards. Great dance record!

I saw her concert in Rotterdam last week and she was amazing. The atmosphere during the concert was electric. Diana was in fine voice and looked fantastic, a true legend.
The arrangements to some of the songs were slightly altered, f.e. 'Touch me in the morning' and 'Love child'. The concert was one classic hit after another, 'Love hangover', 'The boss', all amazing songs.
It's a shame Diana is mostly remembered for her Supremes/Motown years. Her new recordings don't get much attention.
Her nineties albums 'Take me higher', 'The force behind the power' and 'Everyday is a new day' are not bad at all.
Here's some footage of the concert:

Her best Singles were really her Hits with The Supremes. 12 of them went to Number 1 in the USA. They only had 1 UK Number 1 Single - 'Baby Love', in 1964. It's bad as the USA only giving ABBA 1 Number 1 Hit, in my view.
I like:, 'Stop! In The Name of Love', Baby Love', Love Child', 'You Can't Hurry Love', 'The Happening', & 'Reflections'. Plus their fantastic 1969 Hit, with The Temptations - 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me'.
Diana had many Top 5 Hits in the USA, but her 2 biggest Solo UK Hits, did very badly there - 'I'm Still Waiting' - Number 1, in the UK, in 1971, & 'Chain Reaction' - Number 1, in the UK, in 1986. They only reached Number 63, & Number 66, respectively in the USA - a fact that is hard to believe, when they were so huge in the UK.
