Ich Denk' an Dich... Johnny59 :-)
Excuse the funny title - but I couldn't resist it.

I was uploading songs onto my ipod this evening and I thought that I'd best (for the sake of pendanticism) upload the only Agnetha album that I never listen to... (yes, I actually listen to Kom Följ Med I Vår Karusell before I even touch this one! The album in question is Geh' mit Gott - and I've never really liked it and I've never really listened to it further than the third or fourth track because it makes my ears bleed. :-)

However, because I speak-a-da-lingo, and because I really do love Agnetha's voice, I thought I'd give it a thorough listening to ... for the first time since 1994 when I actually got hold of the album. The last track is the one that made my slap my forehead with the palm of my hand because I recognised it immediately. Checking the inlay, I see that it was written by Agnetha (German lyrics by Ben Juris).

The song in question is "Ich denk' an Dich" (I think of you) and I immediately recognised it as Han Lämnar Mig För Att Komma Till Dig from the När En Vacker Tanke Blir En Sång album.

So why is this thread entitled "I think of you, Johnny?" ... because Johnny cried when he first heard the Swedish original (proof here: http://www.iphpbb.com/board/viewtopic.php?nxu=30652567nx61610&p=27223&highlight=#27223) and, if he is anything like me, he might not have realised that there is a (to him) native language version out there.

(Okay! Okay! Everyone else has probably realised this already and I'm possibly the only one is so slow on the uptake) :-)

This is the German lyric - with quick (on the spot) translation:

Manchmal kommt ein Tag im Leben
den man nie vergessen kann
So war's auch bei unser'm Abschied
als die Einsamkeit begann
Tränen war'n in Deinen Augen
doch da sagte ich Dir leis':

> Sometimes, there are days in your life
> that one just can't forget
> That's how it was at our parting
> When the loneliness began
> there were tears in your eyes
> but then I said to you quietly:

Ich denk' an Dich wenn die Kraniche zieh'n
und wenn der Frühling erwacht,
Ich denk' an Dich wenn weißer Flieder blüht,
Ich denk' an Dich und werde auf Dich warten,
Ich denk' an Dich, denn so schön war die Zeit
Schön war die Zeit - nur mit Dir
Ich denk' an Dich und fühle Du denkst da auch an mich
Und kommst bald, bald wieder zu mir

> I'll think of you when the cranes fly away
> and when the springtime awakes
> I'll think of you when white lilacs bloom
> I'll think of you and shall wait for you
> I'll think of you because it was such a lovely time
> such a lovely time - just with you
> I'll think of you and feel you'll be thinking of me too
> and you'll soon, soon come back to me

Jeder hat so seine Sorgen
Einer wenig, Einer mehr,
Doch weil wir uns beide lieben
ist das alles nicht so schwer
Einmal sehen wir uns wieder,
glaube mir, wo du auch bist

> Everybody has their worries
> some less, some more
> but because we love each other
> it isn't all so bad
> We will see each other once again
> believe me, wherever you are

repeat refrain :-)

Okay - and whilst I'm at it... here is the original Swedish lyric with Johnny's translation: http://www.agnetha-forever.de/ChangeLog/translations/translations.html (pdf file of the album)

But I'm guessing you all knew that anyway, huh? :-)
Nathan - 16.02.2007, 23:16

p.s. judging by the English translation of the original lyric, I'd hazard to guess that it's actually much better in Swedish :-)
Carribean - 16.02.2007, 23:20

Herr Nathan: I knew!

And I never listen to that album either.

WATERL00 - 17.02.2007, 09:29

I actually like some of the songs on that "album" (it's not a real one).
Geh Mit Gott is a very beautiful song and together with "Tausend Wunder" (although the swedish lyrics are way better) my favourit from this compilation..
I think it's a shame that Agnetha was only allowed to ecord two songs she wrote herself. The relationship with Dieter Zimmermann was not very good for her creativity and her writing-abilities. He wanted to have controll over his girl-friend's career and I don't like that. (But maybe this is a typical German attitude, wanting to have controll over everything?)
Joe - 17.02.2007, 13:24

I hate the album title, but I love "Ein kleiner Mann in einer Flasche" (which is the only one I know of it so far I think). It's so simple and so much Schlager - I can't get it out of my head! By the way, it's strange how much it sounds like a Wencke Myhre song! :D

Removed a quote which actually had nothing to do with my answer.

That's true. Well, it's a real one - 'cause I've got it in my hand at this minute :-) - but you're right, it's not an official Agnetha release and was published by Royal Records in Viersen - which is ten minutes down the road from where I live, coincidentally. But according to google, they moved to Heerlen - and now they no longer seem to be there either.

That's why I love this forum. I obviously did NOT listen as thoroughly as I had planned to. I didn't realise that Tausend Wunder is the German Version of Agnetha's Jag Skall Göra Allt from Som Jag Är until you made me listen to it again. :-)

WATERL00 wrote: (But maybe this is a typical German attitude, wanting to have controll over everything?)

Well, as you're German, I suppose you're allowed to say that :-))))

Joachim, I'm not much of a fan of Wencke Myhre either (though I know that she sang something about a kleines rotes Gummiboot) :-) and on the whole I hate Schlagermusik... but I've always made an exception for Agnetha's earlier works because she's, well, Agnetha :-)
Nantes - 17.02.2007, 16:52

  I've not heard much of Agnetha's german recordings,
only one or two, so can't really comment.
I'll have to get my act together and try and find some.

It may not be official but it is in the discography in Agnetha's book Som Jag Ar so the lady knows about it!

And Heerlen?? That is where I used to live many moons ago... lol!

Nantes - 17.02.2007, 17:14

 again, just been going through my music and found ten of Agnetha's German songs, Sorry to the person who sent them I forgot.
I must sort this folder out
Nantes - 17.02.2007, 21:42

OK settled down and listened to the ten german songs that I have been sent. There all from this album  Prehaps I should have listened when they were sent. Well I must say that I can see why you don't listen very often to this album. Here the music plays a bigger part for me not being a German speaker. There was also one or two tracks that I didn't let finish.
On saying that I loved Geh'Mit Gott. Sounds very Eurovision Song Contest.

John
Carribean - 17.02.2007, 22:01

Some songs are kinda cute but most of them are horror to my ears...
I mean... Ein kleiner Mann in einer Flasche (A Little Man In A Bottle)... come on!

jacko10 - 17.02.2007, 23:39

I actually Quite Like this Album

Ok its Very Naive and I am not a German Speaker.. But we couldn't Expect a sort of ''Visitors'' type of Album from a very Young and Niave young Girl. However I Think of it as a lovely little Album ok not as good as My Colouring Book or Wrap your Arms around me, But its a little Bit more of Agnetha's History. and I will Happily Play it.. theres some nice Little Ditty's songs on the Album

some do sound a bit dreary though

Jack it also helps when you do not understand the lyrics... lol!

Maxi-saxi - 17.02.2007, 23:42

Can't say I have heard Agnetha singing in German.

Was this very early when she started as a singer or was it later?
How many songs did Agnetha actually record in German?

Maxi-saxi
Carribean - 17.02.2007, 23:47

I am surprised Maxi-saxi with the huge collection you say you have... no German Agnetha at all! One German song (Sunny Boy) is even on Agnetha's compilation My Love My Life but I guess you only collect ABBA.

Agnetha released 8 German singles between 1968 and 1972. She was engaged to a German producer when she started singing in German.

All 16 songs (A and B sides) were collected and released in 1994 on Royal Records. These cd's were sold by the ABBF fanclub for several years but they sold out a while ago.
johnny59 - 18.02.2007, 00:36

Wow. Nathan dedicating an Agnetha topic to me. I'm flattered, man!

My attitude to her German career is ambivalent. In general I don't listen to Schlager anymore since I was ten. (Until then Heino and Rex Gildo were my big heros.) To be honest, I don't think I would listen to those songs if it wasn't Agnetha. The "lyrics" are really uuuh cheesy! And they didn't even choose the good tunes from her Swedish albums, the song Nathan mentions is an exception, but "Senor Gonzales" or "Concerto d'amore" don't belong to my favourites from the Swedish stock either.

On the other hand, the German songs are a proof that she really has bewitched me and I will be under her spell until I die. When she sings "Sunnyboy, Sunnyboy, Sunnyboy, isch hab geträäääumt von diiiiiir!" this may be quite horrible from an objective point of view but little old me just can't get enough of it. My heart still just melts! I fall on my knees and tell her "Baby, you could sing the phonebook on CD and I would stand in line for my copy!"
:love4:

PS: This last sentence is a quote from a person who is well known on this site.

Hi Ron!!

Havent said hello for ages!

No your right And I dont understand it, but you can understand Quality in any Langauge

Like Frida Djupa Now that is Brilliant! because she was Maturer , Had Agnetha recorded Geh' mit Gott has a maturer woman it would have turned out so differently

that is what I am saying, she would have had more control over the situation and Lyrics even, I still like it though , though for music and Agnetha, she could sing in outer mongolian with chinese chorus's and I would still buy the Album!!!

Hehe, there you are!!! :D

Agnetha is the main excuse for listening to Schlager of course. :) However, there really are some Schlagers of the 60s and 70s which I quite like for their music and their sometimes (intentionally!!) funny and sometimes serious lyrics.

This just had to be said! Save the Schlager!

Carribean wrote: I mean... Ein kleiner Mann in einer Flasche (A Little Man In A Bottle)... come on!
If not for the music or lyrics try thinking of Agnetha in an oriental costume like a Jeannie. :D
