the king has lost his crown, a frogotten masterpiece?
Hello,
One of the best track from "voulez vous" is, in my mind, "the king has lost his crown" for the ironic lyrics (the "contradiction" between the provocate title and the sentimental subject), the melody beautiful and the sensual interpretation. This song could be a great hit and for me it's one of the forgotten masterpiece from abba.
Best ragards,
Pierre

A great song indeed and Frida mentioned this song recently for being one of her favorites among all the more obvious songs.
Her vocals are great, I like the lyrics and the strings a lot however I do not think it could have been a hit; somehow it is not catchy enough. Which does not mean that I don't like it since I really do!

Yes a great and wonderful song, with sultry Frida on the microphone, but the song is a bit too funky or jazzy or dreamy somehow to become a major hit.
Still it is one of my favourites. Because of the sexy voice!

Great song but I don't think it would have been a hit. Its one of those songs that maybe you don't listen to very often but always sounds fresh when you hear it. John

I think it's a good song, could have been a lot better, but not hit material. I think the verses are as good as they get. However, the chorus is lacking something. I think the production is overdone in the chorus and the lyric could be better. I don't think the lyric in the chorus matches the quality of the verse at all. I think "Disaster and Disgrace" is too melodramatic, and I think the title and lyric: "The King Has Lost His Crown" is too ambitious...something less metaphoric might have been better. Brilliant song musically, however, and of chorus, Frida's vocals are as good as always.
Cheers!

Hi Pierre
The king has lost his crown is a beutiful song,I love Fridas sultry voice in this song,I would have liked it to have been released as a single but im not sure if it would have been a massive hit though as it was rather mature for ABBA's audiance at that time i think

I'm not sure it's a masterpiece but it is certainly a better song than many give it credit for and it has one of Frida's best vocals on it- all of her signatures are in it- that low, throaty voice and powerful delivery. She packs a punch in this similar to WAISAD, almost vitriolic when she gets going. She certainly knows how to interpret a lyric!

A little footnote- I doubt it's 'hit' potential but I don't mind that as this is one of those tracks on an album that takes you by surprise and makes you realise ABBA weren't simply a singles band. Tracks such as this and As Good As New proved that.

It´s a very nice song, not one of my favourites, but not bad. I like the voices and the lyric.
I also think it wouldn´t been a big hit, because it was not the hit-sound of the charts of 1979. I think it would have been landed on place 25 or so in the charts, just like "Voulez-Vous" which also wasn´t the perfect single for the single buyers and only reached Nr. 14 in Germany.

Interesting song, but not among my favourites. I like the intro and the arrangements. Frida's voice sounds very well, too, velvet-like. Anyway I'm sure it would have never been a hit in 1979, no way, it's not what single buyers look for, not catchy enough.
Regards
